QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) tax incentives to the consumer, as exist for hybrid and alt-energy vehicles, increase demand, which lowers prices. I might only have a couple of college econ courses, but doesn't rising demand (without a simultaneous rise in supply) raise prices? Costs will come down, but cars aren't exactly like DVD players or TV's. Hybrids still command a significant premium over non-hybrid versions.

QUOTE (SpringfieldFan @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 08:08 PM) Point taken, and to be honest I was surpised his numbers hadn't appreciably dropped. However, the argument to me was whether the cause for Jenks' drop in velocity was strategic or physical (injury). I don't believe it was strategic because he could still keep the basic "strategy" yet reserve the 100mph for at least a handful of special occasions (i.e. Gathright). But yes, he remains as effective as ever at closing games. Well, maybe not as effective as in WS05, but that was obviously as tiny "sample size". IIRC, he was hitting high 90's in several games to close out the year. I don't have a problem with Bobby dialing it down a bit (as long as he remains effective, which he has) during most of the year in order to preserve his arm. It's better for him and its better for the Sox.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) For as much s*** as I talk about Ron Turner, this offense has exceeded my expectations by quite a bit. Which isn't saying a whole lot, but is still something. He doesn't exactly have a lot of talent to work with here. Thank you for making my point, Marty Booker. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 05:03 PM) The remarkable thing about these things is not that people get things wrong. It's that the people who keep consistently getting things wrong also keep getting promoted. Or air time/ print space. Seriously, has Kristol been right about anything in the past decade? And yet he's still on TV week-in, week-out.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 09:59 PM) Except for that one game early in the season where he was a 6'5" turd. Hopefully that just ends up being the worst game of his career. Otherwise, Olsen is great, and Clark is also good so he's a luxury. Yeah, I guess we had consistently good performances from guys we expect, like Briggs and Gould. I was just contrasting how I feel at the end of this Bears season to how I felt at the end of the Sox season this year. I was/ am optimistic about the Sox because we had the emergence of Danks, Floyd, Rameriz and The Carlos Quentin. I don't have any optimistic feelings about the Bears. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 09:51 PM) No doubt in my mind that Rex is better than Orton right now. If Orton's coming back next year, I can only pray his terrible 2nd half this season is due to the injury. Rex was no better than what Kyle's doing now. Don't kid yourself. They're both mediocre-bad QB's. -

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 11:43 AM) Didn't Warren compare being gay to incest and Pedophilia? Here's a full quote on that. He didn't equate being gay with incest and pedophilia directly, but they're lumped into the same group of "marriages I think are wrong." You can point out that he's wrong about a "5,000 year definition of marriage," but that's another topic. “I’m opposed to redefinition of a 5,000 year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister being together and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.” -Rick Warren, Pastor of Saddleback Church, December 15, 2008 Obama won because of moderates. They make up the bulk of the people who voted for him. He's running to his biggest constituency. From CNN's exit polling. http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#USP00p1 Political self-identification and Percentage voting for Obama Liberals (22%) 89% Moderates (44%) 60% Conservatives (34%) 20%

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 06:47 PM) Warren got chosen because of his book. Simple as that. Well, yeah, but you asked for a prominent Evangelical who isn't anti-gay. Wallis' book did pretty well from what I remember, and he doesn't hate gays.
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 12:40 PM) Good luck finding a recognizable religious figure to do your invocation who isn't anti-gay. How about Jim Wallis? I've heard a few people mention his name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Wallis I'd rather not have a young-earth creationist & anti-gay guy doing this, but I honestly don't care all that much.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) LOL, do you ever watch him pitch? I don't give a s*** what the stats say, Jenks has become more hittable every single year. It's just a matter of time before hitters catch up. You don't care about the stats (read: actual results of baseball games/ plays) because they directly contradict your bulls*** assertions. QUOTE (SpringfieldFan @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 03:49 PM) Just because his stats didn't worsen with the drop in velocity doesn't mean the drop in velocity had a role in that. The stats may well have been even better if he still used the same heat. Basically, these numbers tell me that whatever effectiveness he lost from the drop in velocity was made up for elsewhere, lets say for the sake of argument by knowing hitters tendencies better now. Well, isn't it a shame he doesn't have the added effectiveness from knowing hitters better as well as his original velecity? Sure, we'd all love a Bobby Jenks who can pitch exactly as he did last year and a 100 MPH fastball with movement, but that's not the argument. The argument that some are trying to make is that his drop in velocity over the past two seasons are a clear indication that he's becoming less effective when the exact opposite is true.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 04:56 PM) We stop lying to ourselves and actually pay attention to the measurements that show the exact opposite. Get out of here with your precious science and facts! What about the sunspot contention (more sunspots lately = rise in temperatures on Earth, Mars, etc.)?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 12:42 PM) I don't think we are reading the same things because I still see problems lending money all over the place. I keep seeing companies and projects frozen because of lending problems. Every day on NPR is a story about how great rates are right now but how you need a 750+ score to qualify. I've also noticed significantly less CC junk mail the past several months. I have to agree with everyone who is saying that the auto industry is an entirely different animal than the auto industry. If the US banking system failed, I'd imagine it would quickly spark a deep, world-wide depression.

I didn't see a single one in my four hour commute, and every road (including four major interstates) was a complete mess.

Rod Blagojevich officially facing federal corruption charges
StrangeSox replied to Steve9347's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 10:07 AM) Seriously this is an ongoing trial, its not the best idea to reveal your evidence to the Defense before you have to. Funny thats exactly what the article says: So I guess Fitzgerald is the bad guy? Fitzgerald, just another Bush Obama cronie To expand this thought a bit, the "Bush playbook" would be to stonewall any questions, cry about partisanship and then claim executive privilege if anyone tried to investigate you. It wouldn't be to conduct an investigation and delay releasing by a week at the behest of the federal prosecutors. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) Yet another play out of the Bush playbook...Delay the release of info until no one is paying attention. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1229367451...icle-outset-box So he should go against the wishes of the federal prosecutors? Either it's "yet another play out of the Bush playbook" or he's stepping all over their work. Sounds like a lose-lose no matter what. From the first line of your article: and later: So what should he have done here, in your opinion?
