QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 11:42 PM) I don't know how you guys put up with walking to class in that cold of weather. I mean, I had to walk about 15 minutes to class today in 12 degree weather (with the wind chill) and it was awful. I almost thought about stopping half way and going back home. I literally couldn't feel my face when I got inside. Do you guys cover your face or anything when it's in the negative degrees, or just suffer? The worst for me was Jan and Feb 07 down at U of I. Weeks of temperatures in the single digits or lower and a good 20 minutes one way to class. I usually had on long underwear, jeans, thick thermal socks, boots, two t-shirts, a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, my winter jacket, gloves, a hat and a scarf. And I was still cold.

Marijuana Legislation
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 11:24 PM) There is no reason on earth somebody shouldn't be allowed to get stoned and listen to Dinosaur Jr. albums all night to unwind. I dont smoke pot much at all, but sometimes I really need a night like that. If alcohol can be sold under the assumption that it will be consumed responsibly why cant weed? I dont care much about this issue, but I find most of the arguments against legalization blown way out of proportion and (for lack of a better word) Reaganesque. I prefer Pavement. My view is that the government needs explicit, compelling reasons in order to ban or prohibit something, not that citizens need to prove something's worth to government in order to allow it. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 07:38 AM) Wouldn't a lot of experience also cloud one's judgement?

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
I just started watching this show a few weeks ago. It's hilarious. Also, Charlie looks exactly like one of my friends and has many of the same mannerisms. An Arrested Development/ Always Sunny block would be fantastic.

Howard Dean
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) Truth is the market crash, GOP scandals, and GW Bush played a much larger role than Howard Dean. If things go badly during the Obama admin the GOP will likely make up ground, it's just how things work. It definitely helped, but Dean had already put the strategy and operations in place to take advantage of the situation.

The very last scene of Burn After Reading made the movie for me. I'd give a 3/4.

Howard Dean
Dean is the one who promoted operations in every state, right? Letting go of the idea of "Republican strongholds" that weren't worth contesting was a major part of their success.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 03:31 PM) Yep. Of course we won't hear about the exorbitant (sp.) costs of anything Obama does, because he's the Messiah. Except that you obviously have. And I have. And so has anyone else who's watched the news this week.

I don't get why he didn't mention his AIDS initiatives in Africa. edit: bmags beat me to it. The AIDS aid has its own problems, though; 1/3 of the funds are for abstinence-only education.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) Which is of course...why he's a major Fox News contributor, why the NYT picked him to run an op-ed column for a while, and why he dined with the President Elect last night. There's no better way to advance your career in politics than by being constantly wrong, as long as you're constantly wrong in advocating for more wars. Watch the Daily Show Monday night? They went to a "school" for media pundits. The veracity of your claims and intellectual ability don't matter. It's all about emotionally-charged language.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 01:44 PM) The supposed consensus of science on global warming has now collapsed? Didn't we just have two presidential candidates who both believed that global warming is man made? I loved that part. Bush sticking his in the sand (or another place where the sun doesn't shine, if you prefer) somehow changed the science behind the claims. Some of the AGW alarmists are over the top, but Bush did absolutely nothing to reverse the scientific consensus. Keep in mind its from the Weekly Standard. The head honcho over there has been pretty much universally wrong every time he's opened his mouth for at least the last 6 years.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 01:39 PM) That is Onion-caliber bad. Most of those things are on the list of things that were WRONG with his presidency. History is not going to look differently on things like waterboarding, for instance. Not only that, but one of Bush's "Ten Best Accomplishments" is a statement he made in his inauguration address that didn't do, change or accomplish a damn thing.

This is an editorial trying to defend Bush's legacy, but given how pathetic of an attempt it is, I figured I'd post it in the Dem thread. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Publ...15/986rockt.asp

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 07:39 AM) They have been talking about doing exactly that on the south side of Chicago. The NIMBY's are blocking it all because they are afraid it will generate extra rail traffic, increase wait times at crossings etc. The restisting cities are falling one by one.

Marijuana Legislation
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 04:50 PM) That's an interesting stance, but i'm betting the "hard" drug dealers will still sell pot at a cheaper price because there won't be any taxes on it. I've talked to pot smokers and some of them have told me they would continue to buy from a dealer if it was legalized because they wouldn't be paying taxes. Where's the black market for alcohol? There's hefty taxes on that, yet an overwhelming majority of alcohol (and cigarette, for that matter) sales are legal.

Teacher Certification Help
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2009 -> 02:24 PM) I don't know if they work with future Illinois teachers, but Purdue Calument in Hammond has a program my wife went through for exactly this. Do you remember how long it took or how many classes it was?

Teacher Certification Help
My girlfriend currently holds a BA in English from University of Illinois - Chicago. She's been working in media for a little while but has recently decided that she'd like to switch careers a little and teach English in secondary school (6-12). We've been looking around at different colleges for a few days now, but only Governor's State seems to have a separate program set up for this case. Everywhere else just has your typical four-year bachelor's listed. She has not been working long enough to qualify for the state's accelerated certification program, unfortunately, and we can't seem to find anything tailored to this situation. Before we start pestering college admissions/ advisers offices, I was wondering if anyone had some insight into this situation. How many classes does one typically have to take (in addition to student teaching and basic skills tests) to file for certification if you already hold a relevant bachelor's degree? Thanks!

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 6, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) Interesting, I didn't get that impression. But then, I didn't really study him too deeply either, because he was too extreme for me to take seriously as a candidate. I was glad he was in the race, but didn't research in any depth. Paul is big on individual freedoms, which is a core GOP belief that I agree with. I knew of some of this stances in this area, and agreed with them. But I was not aware he was rabidly anti-gay, which bothers me. I wasn't really aware myself until about three weeks ago when I saw mention of it while browsing a science blog. Paul says he is big on individual freedoms, but he wants to inject (or at least allow others to inject) religion into public institutions. He has also supported candidates from the Theocratic Constitution Party. That's a bit of cognitive dissonance to me. I also wonder if many of the people who routinely talk about "states rights" in regards to abortion do so because they think they have a shot at getting it banned at that level but not the federal level, but that's just conjecture on my part.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 6, 2009 -> 07:51 AM) Paul got flustered a little too easily when speaking. But I agree with mr. g here, overall, the GOP needs to go more towards what Paul brought to the table - less social crusading, smaller government, personal freedoms. I hear that from lots of current and former GOP voters. You don't go as far as Paul goes, but, you move that direction. Ron Paul is a strong Christian evangelist and doesn't believe in a rigid separation between church and state. He has introduced the "We The People Act", which would allow government institutions to display religious imagery and messages. He also introduced the Sanctity of Life Act, which would have defined life as beginning at conception. He also strongly opposes civil unions or marriages for homosexuals. He also staunchly rejects evolution, though he wouldn't want to force ID into schools because he's against public schools on principle. He is absolutely a social conservative.

Rod Blagojevich officially facing federal corruption charges
I really didn't know much about Bobby Rush before this, and nothing about Burris. However, after their comments (Rush's blatant "crying racism" and Burris commenting that he didn't think there would be any controversy), I think they're both idiots of the highest order.

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 02:48 AM) Slumdog Millionaire is splendid!! Fantastic movie until the last 2 minutes or so. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 08:58 AM) If anyone decided to see . . . Benjamin Button, resists the urge to walk out after the first 30 minutes. The final two hours was breathtaking . Seriously, I like chick flicks, with a chick, and this one did not disappoint. They "solved" some of the reality to movie issues in a rather pleasing way. I enjoyed the movie overall and never felt bored or "when is this going to end," but in the end it just doesn't stand out in my mind. I still need to see Doubt, Frost/ Nixon and The Wrestler. This happens every year. 5 or 6 movies I want to see all come out at once, and then garbage for the next 10 months.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 11:24 PM) I think it's very difficult to compare the New Deal to now. There's no way that the New Deal PROLONGED the Great Depression. But, I'm not sure it was the miracle it was percieved to be as only WWII truely brought us out of the Depression. Here's something I never fully understood about that. So massive government spending, brought on by the need for military hardware, is what really ended the Depression, right? So why couldn't the government cause the same effect with massive spending on non-military goods that will actually benefit society in the long run (like infrastructure, for instance)?
