QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 21, 2017 -> 01:42 AM) They do, it's called Social Security, the problem is that the rate of return is under inflation...but at least guaranteed not to disappear or be cut 10-15% until around 2030. SS is invested in special Treasury bonds, not the stock market.

It's looking more and more like the Senate bill will actually be even more harmful than the House bill, surprisingly. It might make too many changes and fall victim to Byrd Rules, though.

Brexit: UK caves in to EU demand to agree divorce bill before trade talks These negotiations are going to be absolutely brutal for the UK, and there's no "undoing" this for them probably ever but at least for decades.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 20, 2017 -> 09:27 AM) Again I ask, what should I have to give up to pay for other people's healthcare? What should I have to give up to pay for military? police? courts? roads? ports? parks? schools? basic safety standards? basic scientific research? food inspection? customs and immigration systems? medical research? environmental regulations and enforcement? sewer and sanitation systems? power production and communication infrastructure? space programs? weather forecasting? etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. Are you in favor of abolishing Medicare?

Drug Deaths in America Are Rising Faster Than Ever
StrangeSox replied to StrangeSox's topic in The Filibuster
In just one year, nearly 1.3 million Americans needed hospital care for opioid-related issues -
I have no problem with saying that people will be able to consume fewer luxury goods and indulgences in order to prevent others from suffering and dying from treatable and preventable illness. And keep in mind what sort of tax cuts we're taking about here. The tax cuts Republicans are proposing to fund via taking health care from working class Americans and children with disabilities are targeted towards people with $200k or higher incomes. There's a tax cut targeted directly for health insurance CEOs. We are not talking about some people having to go without basics or even nice, comfortable lives. We're talking about slowing down the wealth hoarding not seen since the gilded age so that a kid born with ms can get health care throughout their lives, so that my friend who needs weekly transfusions won't hot a lifetime cap and die in a couple of years. To argue that, no, we instead need to allow the already well off to hoard even more money while the rest of us suffer is frankly immoral. Every other developed country in the world manages to do this. That the wealthiest country in the history of the world does not is a stain.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 03:53 PM) Sorry you can't buy that boat, someone you don't know engaged in a risky lifestyle and now *you* are required to pay for their healthcare. Thank you for working so hard. Would you mind picking up a couple extra shifts? Did you see the guy you passed on the street? He's abusing drugs and going to need a transplant and someone has to pay for it. I can play the ridiculous example game. The ~risky lifestyle~ of being born with a genetic predisposition towards an illness or just catching something or being in an accident. If you're sick, you must have done something to deserve it? Come on, tex. You're not really defending a nearly $1T tax cut for the wealthy in the face of letting people suffer and die from lack of health care access, are you? QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 03:54 PM) Didn't trump pledge to stop the lobbyists and special interest groups? Mitch McConnell is not Trump, and involving zero actual health care experts or knowledgeable people in the secret crafting of a bill that impacts every American and 1/6th of the economy is horrendous.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 03:31 PM) I am completely ashamed of what this country represent's and stands for in 2017. Murder is legal and always has been as long as its someone non black killing a black person. From January, but don't think it was posted here before. THE FBI HAS QUIETLY INVESTIGATED WHITE SUPREMACIST INFILTRATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT Bureau policies have been crafted to take into account the active presence of domestic extremists in U.S. police departments.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) This is a little simplistic. He had a broken tail light, for which he was pulled over. He was also stoned and didn't listen to the officer when he told him to keep his hands in sight and not reach for anything including the weapon he told the officer he had. In fact part of the defense was that he was too stoned to understand the officers directions. 1) He wasn't driving 2) The broken tail light was a pretext as was revealed by the reasons the officer gave over the radio for pulling them over i.e. having a "wide nose"
-
He was a Good Guy with a gun who told police he had the gun and then told them he was going to reach for his wallet as asked and was then shot 7 times. They were also pulled over for Driving While Black as the radio comms from the cop before the stop recorded him saying he was pulling them over because they "looked like suspects" from a recent robbery due to their "wide-set nose." The suspect description didn't mention nose width.

The Klondike Kickback! e: it's like the GOP has taken every single thing they complained about with how the ACA was passed and ramped it up 10 fold.
-
I'd buy any of their hand-wringing about policy concerns if these same GOP Senators were loudly denouncing McConnell's tactics of writing this bill entirely in secret and holding zero public hearings on it on the way to rushing it to a vote as quickly as possible, potentially as short as 2-4 hours after the text of the bill is made public. e: and don't forget that the "obamacare collapsing!" rhetoric is 1) largely bulls*** and 2) largely of the GOP's making

I've, uh, acquired some of their stuff through absolutely 100% legal means. My wife really loved T25 and it got her into the best shape in her life. Beast Body helped me put on 12 pounds (I've always had a Chris Sale-like physique)

They don't care. The GOP has never cared about trying to solve healthcare problems. It's an excuse for an $800B tax cut for the wealthy that will let them cut even more taxes for the wealthy when they get around to tax "reform."

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 09:06 AM) Officially by policy that has ended. What happens in the streets and courts has always been different. Yeah, I guess we'll see. Hopefully you're right and ICE/CBP stop their rapid acceleration towards some pretty dark tactics and goals.

Majority Whip Steve Scalise Shot at Charity Baseball Practice
StrangeSox replied to caulfield12's topic in The Filibuster
This country didn't do s*** after over 20 children were gunned down. It isn't going to do anything now. Actually, scratch that. Many states around the country actually loosened gun laws in response to Sandy Hook. -
We asked 8 Senate Republicans to explain what their health bill is trying to do (the real goal of the bill is giving tax cuts to millionaires so they can buy a bigger boat, any impact on healthcare policy is largely incidental)

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 08:56 AM) On a good note, imnsho "dreamers" will not be deported. Trump will not be pushing for immediate deportation which was a campaign promise. They've already been deporting DACA and DAPA immigrants, though. ICE and CBP are rounding up anyone and everyone they can, even out of medical aid facilities, and the regular stories about their activities are disgusting and heartbreaking. Local police are dismayed and angered because these draconian actions are destroying trust and relationships with immigrant communities that take years or decades to build. There are apparently a lot of bad people within ICE and CBP and they've been given free reign by this admin.
