  1. Yeah but public speeches by the President aren't detailed security and military assessments and strategies. If the administration isn't bothering to gather intel and analysis on what ISIL's goals, strategies, motivations etc. are that's pretty incompetent, but I don't think you can assume that based on certain interpretations of public statements.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 11:17 AM) I wouldn't call it "mad," just upsetting. When he talks about terrorist acts committed by Islamic groups like ISIS he's fearful of labeling them or talking about them in a factual way. We have terrorists specifically targeting a group of people (Christians or Jews) and he calls them "random" acts of violence. There was nothing random about either attack. They were both deliberate and the perpetrators admitted that. ISIS is targeting Christians, Jews, Muslims, Yazidis, basically anyone they come across. I don't know that Christians are any more threatened as a group than anyone else who isn't a radical Islamic millenialist are. So in a narrow sense, yeah, they're driven by anti-Christian sentiments, but they're also equally driven by a lot of other things. "Random" isn't exactly the right word, but focusing on discrete ethnic groups might limit understanding what is really driving them. The scope of their ethnic cleansing is pretty broad.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 09:45 AM) So, in your opinion, most of the working world doesnt have things like commission or bonuses to worry about? Most people working in this country don't, but even when they do, bonuses and commissions are coming from your employer, not directly from your customers. Most of the rest of the world's service industry doesn't rely on tips or at least not to the extent that we do in the US, though. Look what rabbit and several other people who have worked as waiters have said above. Tips can be completely random and you can get a crappy tip on a big bill and you have no idea why (other than "those customers are a bunch of assholes"). It's not that the idea of better pay for better performance is wrong, it's that tipping is so random and if you have a problem with your service, letting management know or telling the wait staff directly is much clearer.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 06:59 PM) I could have sworn studies show that how nice and attentive you are means very little In the tip that people give. I think This American Life did a podcast on it. Yep, it's a really crappy signal. But man do customers hate it when you take away that power. http://www.slate.com/articles/life/culture...ng_tipping.html In most of the rest of the world and in most non-service jobs, we manage to function without tips. Eta longer, multi part read on this guy's experience running a tipless restaurant. http://jayporter.com/dispatches/observatio...art-1-overview/
  5. I had an extended work trip last summer with myself, one guy in his mid-30's and two guys right around 70. The two of us younger guys made sure we tipped heavy to make up for the 10% tip the older guys would leave.
  6. honestly though who follows newt gingrich on twitter?
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 10:53 AM) The new Yukons/Tahoes are really nice inside. They finally fixed the dated interior and have cool features like noise canceling. I put about 1100 miles on a Tahoe rental over the summer, it was really nice.
  8. Just got a series of emails about every eastern office in the company being closed or opening late today.
  9. I've had newer malibus multiple times as rentals, they're pretty nice at that price point.
  10. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 17, 2015 -> 06:35 PM) I disagree with the cheap suit thing, while I wouldn't recommend getting nothing but expensive suits, I would recommend getting ONE very nice suit that you wear out for a night on the town. Think Vegas, a fancy party, or something similar. The material, the way it looks, the way it feels, the way it drapes...you can tell...they simply look and feel better. I absolutely love my nice suit...and hate my cheap one. Even a cheap suit can be tailored to better fit you. Even big chains like K&G have in-house tailors.
  11. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Feb 17, 2015 -> 03:20 PM) Thanks I'll definitely check them out then. BR is part of the Old Navy/Gap brand of stores. They all offer "tall" sizes for most of their clothes as well as 36" inseams if you need that (I do).
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 17, 2015 -> 02:45 PM) Full disclosure, our software is really damned expensive. We do have price sensitive firms who can't afford it, but it the best stuff on the street. This idea has come out of losing those firms as sales. They pitched it as Lite, but I really hated that name. I do like Essentials as well as express. AutoCAD has "LT" I've seen a lot of tiering follow: express/start, standard, premium or premier, professional or enterprise labeling on other CAD software and video management software.
  13. QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 17, 2015 -> 01:14 PM) In terms of urban planning (as opposed to the interests of the teams involved), it is basically agreed-upon by researchers that sports stadiums don't do cities any good. Expensive, big, don't do much for the surrounding area. I know that's true as far as public financing of sports stadiums, but is it true even when the stadiums are 100% privately financed?
  14. that's a good read, and This American Life did a full episode in one Long Island car dealership a couple of years ago. http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-arch...de/513/129-cars
  15. Court reopens appeal of Adnan Syed, subject of "Serial" podcast
  16. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 16, 2015 -> 12:55 PM) http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/execution-list-2014 I have not vetted the source, but the Texas list looks correct. Some interesting stuff there. Texas is likely set to kill another innocent man.
  17. No idea why, but today's one of our "company-chosen floating holidays." Not going to complain.
  18. I really like banana republic, that's about the top of the price category I'd spend. A nice pair of pants,a dress shirt and a sweater is really dressy for my workplace typically, and half the time I'm more likely to be in carhart, so I only have two suit jackets.
  19. Bill Maher and Sam Harris are two godless liberal atheists who nonetheless speak more strongly against Islam than other religions.
  20. Reservations at 730, wasn't going to be seated until 930 last night. Good job, cooper's hawk. First time we tried to go out on Valentine's day in at least six years, last time for a while.
  21. I'm pretty sure Balta has a car and buys petroleum-based products as well.
  22. Rauner is making it pretty clear that his number one goal in Springfield is to smash unions. More charter schools, allowing city-by-city right-to-work (a man to death) and now his illegal executive order trying to make the state rtw for public employee unions. http://www.newrepublic.com/article/121051/...unions-illinois Doesn't really seem to have any other plans.
  23. White people have it so tough, not like easy street for black people and Muslims
