  1. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 10:09 PM) They are currently the best in the division. What he said is true. It would be different if GB was a losing team. Right now they need to beat GB. He should be here to get this team to a Superbowl. Beating GB can be a part of that, but it isn't absolutely necessary and it isn't goal #1. We'd all rather have a 14-2 SB champ than a 2-14 "Beat GB!" champ. It's not that laying out a plan to supplant GB as NFC North champions is bad, it's just that the first words being "I'm here to beat GB!" rubs me as the same-old, same-old from the Bears. but like jake said, maybe the McCaskeys are part of the meathead group...
  2. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 04:45 PM) Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora 1h1 hour ago- The first words Pace spoke in his interview " I'm here to beat Green Bay". well that makes me like him less. His job is to get the team to the playoffs and the Superbowl, not to appease meatheads.

  4. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) George & Ted should still be in the room. Ultimately they sign the checks. I think they should go off of the consultants recommendation but they also have to be comfortable with the process. I don't think they should just wait outside while Ernie does all the work. If I were a candidate and I couldn't meet with the owner and president and talk to them and understand their visions of your role, etc, I'd look very poorly on the Bears organization and would not be interested in working with them. That's an important point. Acorsi isn't running the Bears. He'll be done with them shortly. The new GM owes it to himself to get a complete and accurate understanding of his role, responsibilities and power within the organization. Ultimately, that's still George & Ted's call, and it's the working relationship they all have to live with for years to come. I wouldn't want a GM who didn't interview with George and Ted or at least Ted.
  5. I would imagine that, even if the absolute numbers are different, the trend line would be the same in the government statistics.
  6. FWIW, Sunni Muslims make up about 20% of the world's population and would be offended on some level with depictions of Mohammed being published. It's a pretty silly mistake to conflate "people who would be offended" with "people who would commit terrorism over it."
  7. Islam does not allow for any depictions of Mohammad. edit: well, Islam as interpreted by some sects, notably Sunnis, anyway. Shiites don't have a problem with them these days at least per wikipedia.
  8. Jesus christ, AP. That's not the right reaction.

  10. Can't just blame it on diy previous owners, though my house has its share of problems from that. There's plenty of contractors out there that do shoddy work, don't follow code, don't follow industry standards etc. I probably wouldn't try tackling an entire HVAC system though, that just seems nuts for a DIY.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 03:51 PM) Carlisle was on the gutenberg project for free, ha. It's really incredible to me how hard this is. Like, I don't even know basic chronology, but nobody has been able to point to something all encompassing. If I wanted someone to learn about the Civil War, I'd point them to McPherson and then onward and upward. I'm going to try the essays. this is an excerpt he sent me from the Mark Steel book: and he sent me this tumblr this morning: http://thathappenedinthefrenchrev.tumblr.com/

    2015 TV Thread

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 02:39 AM) I've been watching my Breaking Bad barrel blu-rays each night before bed. It's really odd seeing the behind the scenes stuff from the early seasons when Bryan Cranston still has hair, Jesse is a skinny looking punk that acts nervous on camera, and Vince Gilligan doesn't have a mustache. Some really great content though. It's crazy how much work those set designers put in to scenes that only last 20-30 seconds on air. Bryan Cranston seems like one of the most down to Earth actors I can imagine. He is constantly joking and keeping it light and is having fun. It seems like that would have been an amazing fun crew to work on. Also, a funny tidbit I learned was that Bob Odenkirk didn't even watch a single episode of Breaking Bad until like season 4 or something. He was on for 2 seasons and had no idea who these characters were. He said he would act a scene in a completely wrong tone at times because he didn't know if a guy was good or bad. He said something like "I was able to put together that this Gus guy I was always talking about did some bad things." lol. His character is the one who introduced Gus to the show! He said Cranston used to always bust his balls saying "Still haven't watched the show yet, huh Bob?". Kind of ironic the actor who seemed least interested in the show he was working on gets the lead in the spinoff. There was a really good interview with him in GQ back when the final season was starting. edit: he also trolled Comic Con in 2013 by going to the show and walking the floor in a Walter White mask
  13. I'd say he wants to read something about the French Revolution. I've got a friend pursuing a phd in history in a different era from the FR but he always nerds out about the FR. He hasn't read a lot of "overview" books on the FR I guess, but this is what he said: He hasn't read the 12, but says the author is pretty well-regarded. The closest he could really recommend to a broad overview is this collection of essays by historians. It's more about what historians have thought and said about the FR over time, but I thought you might be interested. His first recommendation would still be the pop history book by Mark Steel mentioned above. Not a rigorous analysis but a good way to get into it as long as you take some things with a grain of salt.
  14. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 07:42 AM) And their fans have every right to be pissed about their HC not having the balls or brains to go for it on 4th and 1 in plus territory. That was just straight-up dumb. Their chance of winning is way higher going for it there than it is punting. edit: this is generally true of 4-and-1 situations
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2015 -> 11:16 AM) Texas has no housing policy. As in they have no zoning laws, at all. I thought that was primarily Houston?
  16. Old San Juan and the fort are cool.
  17. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 31, 2014 -> 01:09 PM) Guys like Cam Newton come far and between but your point remains. Was Cam ever really suspected of being a bad person or just violating stupid NCAA rules?
  18. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Dec 31, 2014 -> 12:01 PM) That's probably not accurate (just anecdotal), and I could just as easily say that Rodgers put up the bulk of his statistics in blowouts where the defense very likely quit against him. Were Rivers' stats put up at the end of games? That's something I've always wondered about some of the criticism/downplaying I've heard of the Bears offensive successes last year. I've heard "well if you take out defensive scores they weren't ranked as high..." but it's never clear if they're taking defensive scores out for everyone or just the Bears.
  19. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 31, 2014 -> 11:27 AM) Granted I haven't been there since 8th grade, but the jousting and stuff was pretty cool to see in person, most of it is staged but they are definitely hitting each other for real. I went as a camp counselor in 2004 or 2005. It was still entertaining. And now that I think of it, I think my 33 year old brother went with his fiance for his birthday last year and had a good time.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 31, 2014 -> 11:20 AM) There are so many places around Woodfield Mall you can take her. Also, the South Barrington Arboretum on Rt 59 and 90 has a bunch of restaurants like Coopers Hawk and Pinstripes, and Lucky Monk is up the road. Another vote for them. I've been to the one in Burr Ridge multiple times.
