1) That article is several years old, not new. 2) It's published in a self-described "Tri-annual student law review for conservative and libertarian legal scholarship." It's not a peer-reviewed research paper, it's an article by two anti-gun control lawyers. 3) They got Luxembourg's murder rate wrong by a factor of 10. This is notable because they repeatedly hold up Luxembourg in the text as an example of why gun control is so wrong. 4) Their other main comparison is Russia. As we all know, Russia is a pretty f***ed place for many, many reasons. A simple correlation of gun control and murder rates isn't particularly useful. 5) There are numerous, actually-peer-reviewed papers that have come to the exact opposite conclusion. e.g. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/hicrc/firearms...guns-and-death/

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 28, 2013 -> 10:28 AM) That's been the haters viewpoints since Hernandez was arrested. How many NFL players were arrested this offseason? Any how many of their college coaches were brought up at fault? Who cares? That's not really relevant to whether or not UM actually did cover up shady/criminal behavior by Hernandez. That doesn't make him directly responsible for the murders years later, but it doesn't speak well for him.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 28, 2013 -> 10:22 AM) He's changed his mind for a good cause so it's totally a-OK. That sentence doesn't define which nation he is referring to!!

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 28, 2013 -> 10:24 AM) Your hate is nothing but rational. Tell me again how Urban is responsible for Aaron Hernandez possibly murdering several people while playing for the pats. uh, what?

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 28, 2013 -> 08:07 AM) I wouldn't worry too much about it, I've owned many such drives from many different manufacturers and have never had a problem. These high rates of failures you read about make me question how these people are treating their equipment. I'd venture to guess I use this type of stuff more often than most, and like I said, no issues regardless of manufacturer. Keep in mind, I also carry an iPhone around without a case, and have never broken one or scratched one badly, either. I'm just not a clumsy mess. I carry my two-year-old Droid X2 without a case and drop it constantly. The back is beat up, but the screen is fine. I don't get how people are constantly breaking their phones. The only phone I've ever broken was an old flip phone, and that was because the hinges snapped after having it for a few years.

Chicago Tonight had a pretty good segment on it yesterday. http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2013/08/27/syrian-conflict

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) It's not the language, it's the total lack of respect for the people around her, the agents trying to do their job and protect her and so on. The disdain for people beneath her is just wrong. I bet she is a lousy tipper as well. ...have you read the scopes (or various other links you could google) review of those quotes yet? A lot of them are from one source in a book over 20 years ago, and even then, have had the gratuitous profanity added in from the original.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) Not for the true ADHD. For them it acts as a calming agent. This is why it's prescribed. For the people faking it, it does add a stimulant effect but can "overdo" it to the point of loos of focus. It increases concentration (it changes the way your brain goes into and out of "concentration mode"; the way your brain acts when you're focused is different from when you're not, and ADHD people have a higher threshold for activating that functionality) but it also absolutely functions as a stimulant, at least in adults who are heavily on the "AD" side and not the "HD" side.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) This chemical weapons thing is not good and really in its infancy. Hate to be a doomsayer but the future of the world looks pretty bleak right now. Modern chemical weapons have been used since WWI if not earlier, and the entire world was on the brink of nuclear annihilation numerous times throughout the 20th century. I don't think the threat the world faces is from weaponry.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) If that's the case then it doesn't seem that Russia and China have anything to gain by defending Syria. I'm not going to pretend that I know Russia and China's geopolitical goals and strategies, but abandoning an ally when they're facing an internal rebellion and outside pressure isn't exactly a good signal to send to the rest of your allies.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) There's also the possibility that doing something makes the situation worse as well.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 01:36 PM) You need to go on Jeopardy! or some s***... Nah, I have ADD so I'm up on this stuff. Which also explains why I'm posting about it on Soxtalk at 1:38PM on a weekday.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 06:50 PM) It's not for the stimulant, it's for the increased focus component that works with ADHD. If you have ADHD the drugs decrease the hyperactivity and allow the student to focus. The problem is with people you don't truly have the ADHD it can cause increased hyperactivity (similar to the stimulant) however, it cause many to lose focus and just be hyper. So many try but many also stop because it doesn't help. Well, it also definitely functions as a powerful stimulant regardless of whether or not it helps you concentrate.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 08:13 PM) I may be getting technical, but the prescriptions like Adderall and Vyvanse are in fact amphetamines or "amphetamine salts." Ah, right, there's two major classes of ADHD drugs. One are the adderall-type amphetamines, the other are the Ritalin-type methylphenidates.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) So then what if we just sit there and let this continue for a while. Then what? Don't people start leaving Syria by the tens of thousands until the country is just about empty? There is already a huge flow of refuges into Turkey and other nearby countries. There's always the possibility that it ends up like Rwanda, the DRC, and other humanitarian crises.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) Shouldn't we be working with Russia and China on this? Why are they so adamant about us not attacking? Do they think there's not enough proof of the chemical weapon attacks? They are an ally of Assad. They do not want their ally attacked. We wouldn't our allies attacked, either, even if they were engaging in horrible things.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) OK, I get that Iran is crazy, but what do Russia and China have to gain by pushing back so hard in defense of a country that just used chemical weapons on its own civilians? They've been an ally and a supporter of Assad for decades. If they suddenly dump him now, what does that say to the rest of their allies? The US/NATO have supported plenty of s***ty regimes in the past, it's all just a part of foreign policy.

I've read multiple times over the years that the rate of diagnosis for ADHD among MLB players is way higher than the general population rate. The belief is that they seek this diagnosis so that they can take the various highly stimulative drugs used to treat it. A modern, completely legal alternative to amphetamines.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) 55% isn't a majority now? What is this 55% in reference to? eta: yes, plenty of Democrats are dumb hypocrites on Obama's foreign and civil liberties policies, or they just have terrible policy beliefs of their own.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) You've been trying to corner Duke for pages. Apparently again, it is only bad when it isn't you. It is always different when it is someone else. Duke's argument, at least to me, seems to be that somebody who is against some domestic drone policy shouldn't support Obama/Democratic candidates because of that. It's a bad argument because it assumes that "drone strikes" should override any other policy concerns. It's also bad because there's no reason to believe that the Democrats' opponents will be any better on these very same policies. Pointing out previous Republican support for the things duke is concerned about or Rand Paul's statements on using drones isn't an "always different" argument. Neither Reddy nor I are excusing, justifying or support Obama's drone policies. In fact, we've both explicitly condemned it multiple times in this thread.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) So by pointing out that it was just an extension of a Bush policy, that was no attempt to make it not as bad for Obama? lol, you are full of it. I read it as arguing that there's no reason to expect that the Republicans would be any better on this issue than the Democrats
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) But your subconscious did by making the line Bush. Or at least that is what you would say if this was about race. I didn't make any line. I think you're confusing me and Reddy. Even if the line is "Bush," you still have Obama being pretty much s*** on this issue, so I really don't know what you're talking about here.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:26 PM) other than growing the economy and lowering the deficit and creating a "golden years" for america's economy? besides that? yeah that's even less relevant to a discussion about national security/civil liberties than the A&S acts.
