  1. that looked familiar but I go to far too many intertubes sites to keep them all straight
  2. The LIBOR scandal in an infographic: http://www.businessinsider.com/infographic...xplained-2012-7
  3. but global warming would cost too much and be too economically disruptive to address! "I told you so" is little comfort
  4. I don't think your employer is legally allowed to require you to see another doctor of their choosing. I found this, which seems to be relevant: http://www.natlawreview.com/article/what-f...ies-may-buy-you edit: I should add that my background knowledge here is essentially zero, so when I said "I don't think" I wasn't making a strong statement at all.
  5. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 12, 2012 -> 12:48 PM) Give Penn State the death penalty. Literally. The entire campus.
  6. Which, in this case, I'm fine with, because it isn't really my business. Maybe it's his constituents' business but that's a much different relationship than between your employer and you. I'm genuinely curious as to how much you have to divulge to your employer.
  7. Hey guys it was an honest question on the legal requirements of that. There's some line there between "f*** off, none of your business" and "here's my medical charts"

  9. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 12, 2012 -> 01:38 PM) Call me crazy...but I'm not of fan of how some of you are giving these politicians excuses for prolonged absence from work without showing/stating an actual reason why. We aren't talking about some perk-less minimum wage job here...we're talking about a very high paying job, with perks the likes of which none of us could even imagine. If I, or anyone on this forum (that I know of) missed work for this long and cited the reason of "exhaustion" or "personal", we'd be in the unemployment line within a week. I'm not saying a person with a legitimate reason cannot miss work for an extended amount of time...but like the rest of us, you need to tell your company/bosses why...and in the case of an elected public official...WE, the people...are his f***ing boss. Another politician taking advantage of his high paying, high powered position. It's a private medical issue. I don't care or need to know the details of Kirk's condition, either. How much information is your employer entitled to if you have to go on long-term leave?
  10. Crooked Timber has been having a months-long back-and-forth with the "Bleeding Heart Libertarians" regarding libertarian philosophy and the workplace. There's lots of interesting stuff there, and dozens of links once you're heading down the rabbit hole.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2012 -> 10:19 AM) Evidently Millen's analytical skills are on par with his GM skills.
  12. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 07:15 PM) And meanwhile Harry Reid continues to deny a floor vote for an Obama budget, continuing that classic Republican obstructionism. They are there to vote on things, and yet that nasty Republican refuses to even let them vote at all. Oh wait, Reid isn't a Republican. That isn't Obama's budget but the thing republicans labeled Obama's budget iirc
  13. I'm pretty sure the moral of that story is that only the wealthy deserve to procreate. eta: the "moral" of the story is simply a profile of the life of American rural poor as experienced by one family.

  15. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 08:23 AM) Why has he left Heath Bell in there to close even after countless blown saves, and the fact that he obviously is not in the right place mentally or mechanically to close right now? The GM brought in the closer, nothing Oz can do about it. He's not allowed to bench players or set the roster.
  16. It's great if you find a song with the right tempo
  17. How much mass transit funding is federal?
  18. deregulation is just as inevitable.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 08:40 AM) Again, as we get into typical filibuster circular debate of switching topics to suit the argument of the moment, the data is skewed to say something, while ignoring something vital. That is the point here. All you have to do is look at how the data presentation changed as soon as a different topic was presented. I honestly don't know what you're talking about here. Reddy said most of the working poor walk to work, which isn't true. They have significant transportation cost burdens. I wasn't switching topics to make a point, I was responding directly to one thing Reddy said. edit: can you explain what you find false, misleading or incomplete about this statement: benefits here refers to "total amount of tax revenues not collected due to the tax cuts." If that total was $100B, then 299.7M Americans got $58B total and 300k Americans got $42B total.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 08:36 AM) What do the total benefits look like, if we want to compare apples to apples here, and not switch focuses as it benefits the debate. I'm not sure what benefits you're referring to? I posted that in response to the idea that the working poor typically walk to work. That isn't true.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 08:35 AM) And even your numbers generated by the American Public Transportation Association, show it is a primarily middle class or better activity. It still benefits a wide swath of Americans. With cap gains and dividends reductions, 0.1% capture 42% of the benefits.
