  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 06:26 PM) Don't even start, because if you start, then he'll start demanding the rest of us call him that, too. :lolhitting
  2. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 12:42 PM) I understand it's political...but so are most things today. After a while, the message gets lost...and nothing gets done because they're too busy trying to get that message across...over...and over...and over... This bill represented doing something. There is no way comprehensive tax reform is going to happen in an election year in normal circumstances. There is no way comprehensive tax reform is going to happen when one side refuses to allow any increase in revenues. Piketty and Saez are two pretty influential economists in the area of income and wealth distribution and tax policy and they support it. http://link.tapatalk.com/api/click?key=a7e...8f372351b321dd8
  3. The buffet rule is political and meant to show that republicans are against any taxes on the wealthy while voting against payroll tax cuts as well. it is not presented as comprehensive tax reform but a starting point. Anyway I just like highlighting bills with 50+ votes failing.
  4. The Buffet rule failed in the Senate yesterday, 51 YES 45 NO.
  5. Soxbadger you are what is wrong with America.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:25 AM) Remember though, the forensic/DNA evidence is by far the most powerful evidence in any case. Unless you absolutely cannot square the forensic evidence with an overwhelming amount of evidence, like a dozen witnesses and receipts proving the person on trial was 1000 miles away at the time, I'd believe the forensic/lab evidence over anything else. People also expect iron-clad forensic evidence these days. Thanks, CSI!
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) Well that's true. But again if that's the key piece of evidence I don't see how the public defenders office wouldn't allow that cost. I know when I've gotten testing done (blood/food/clothing) it's been hundreds of dollars, not thousands, and i'm sure the PD's office gets discounts if they do volume work. If anything i'm sure it's more on the PD's office simply accepting the test results (as they probably should since they should be trusted) and not believing their client. Which isn't something to be upset with them about considering 90% of their clients lie straight to their faces about everything. PD offices barely have enough money to pay meager salaries to severely overburdened lawyers.
  8. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:34 AM) I've mentioned this before but for me it's easy. Pay me my regular day's wages and I'll be happy to sit on a jury. $11 a day won't pay my bills. That really sucks that a lot of employers do this. I have to turn in my $11 check or whatever it is as proof that I went, but I otherwise receive my normal pay.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:03 AM) There are plenty of labs out there that test this stuff on a daily basis. It's not like we're talking 10k here either. If i'm wrongly accused of killing/raping someone, and some kind of forensic evidence test is confirming (in error) the accusation, money isn't going to deter me from getting another test done. how much is a public defender going to be able to spend on lab tests?
  10. This is going back to the 80's and 90's so these sorts of labs are a lot more wide-spread now.
  11. via Volokh: Today’s Washington Post has an extensive report by Spencer Hsu on the Department of Justice’s failure to disclose flaws in forensic work that may have led to the conviction of innocent people. It begins:

  13. But there's no reason to presuppose that he won't get a fair trial.
  14. True story, I met Drew Peterson at Bar Louie in Bolingbrook after a Sox game shortly after all this s*** started going down. He was a giant creep.
  15. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:04 AM) Go read up articles on ESPN. Analysts basically told him to stop crying, and fans are bashing him like never before. Even the "self proclaim" D Rose fans are tired of his complaining. These two words should not be used together.
  16. Also the Drew Peterson trial still hasn't started http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-574...-peterson-case/
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:09 AM) If you can suggest a better legal system than the one we currently have, I'd be happy to listen. I feel like my response is going to be that this is the worst system we could have...except for all the others. If the case you cited didn't get a fair trial, then why didn't it fall apart on appeal? He certainly has that right. The French have a non-adversarial justice system.
  18. Maybe Peterson is being railroaded, but he hasn't been a big news story for several years now. Either way, there's obvious counter-points to the idea that media attention precludes a fair trial, which was Balta's point. You can always request a bench trial instead of a jury trial.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 16, 2012 -> 11:15 PM) Being white must suck so much ass. Everything's so unfair! (Yeah yeah I know Zimmerman is "not white" etc. etc. etc.) Yeah, there wouldn't even be a trial if the media hadn't gotten involved. But now it's a big lynch mob because there's going to be an actual trial now? What?
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 16, 2012 -> 07:40 AM) Bill Maher about Ozzie Guillen on HuffPo? Not even worth a click.
  21. EPA estimates are also just that--estimates. This article has a pretty in-depth review of how they actually test the cars: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/the-t...stimates-page-3
  22. It is fantastic but not for the reason the artist intended.
  23. QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 13, 2012 -> 05:19 PM) I still don't even know what Instagram is. apparently it's a filtering app for photos so you can make them look olde timey!
