I know this will come as a complete shock to many, but the states with abstinence-only education have the highest rates of teen pregnancy. How can this possibly be?!! http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/04/10...-sex-education/

What I know is that I care much more about him being charged, then I do about him being convicted. What always rankled about this case wasn't that Zimmerman might not see a jail cell (that's what judges and juries determine) but that law enforcement had done everything to foreclose that possibility. We may find that they still have. I imagine a lot was lost in bungling. But at the very least this says, "We take the loss of life seriously." http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archiv...-martin/255753/

"His life is over, he can't even walk into a 7/11 without fear!" Contrast with Trayvon's life literally being over because Zimmerman shot him to death as he was walking home from a 7/11.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 12, 2012 -> 08:57 AM) Duh? Zimmerman's lawyers don't care about that. They care about getting their client off. Did OJ's lawyers care about his ex-wife? They are defense lawyers for god's sake. Zimmerman's lawyers should care about how their statements will be perceived. I'd perceive it as callous indifference and an emotional ploy that leaves them looking completely clueless as to why so many people were upset in the first place. But of course I'd never be on the jury.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 12, 2012 -> 08:57 AM) Huh? Talking about him having some version of PTSD and having all this media pressure seems like it'd do the opposite. I'd imagine it'd make him seem more human, they're trying to convince a jury that he was put in a spot where he had no choice but to take the shot and hates the fact that it came to that. Doesn't seem like it'd tell a story of indifference to me Zimmerman, the man who shot a teenager walking home from 7/11 to death, is now too scared to go into a 7/11. Boo. f***ing. hoo.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 12, 2012 -> 08:38 AM) Painting him as the victim is going to be 100% of the strategy here. The threats on the guys life and the glare of the media spotlight really aren't going to help stop that from working. Zimmerman shot a kid to death who was guilty of walking home from 7/11. To me, it'd demonstrate callous indifference to the life of Trayvon.

Zimmerman's former attny: Zimmerman's current attny: There must be a stronger word than "irony" to describe this.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) I love that woman's voice. They're a little more soul than Black Keys, though. Kings of Leon had a decent song or two, but I do like the Black Keys quite a bit. This album was way cleaner sounding (especially the bass) and more poppy. But their first first albums are straight up blues, there's some RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough covers on the first record. The first three Kings of Leon albums were fun if not exactly ground-breaking music. The last two were incredibly boring.

Tex, The Bell Curve was published in the 1990's. The shoddy, pseudo-scientific research behind it is still "debated" today. These are ideas that literally call blacks genetically inferior to whites. These conversations aren't limited to obscure white supremacist magazines or stormfront but pop up at places like NRO and Andrew Sullivan's blog.

Who should Romney choose as VP candidate?

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 01:59 PM) The Clinton Family fued with Obama was pretty heated as well. What is the saying, politics makes strange bedfellows? There was a political/power rivalry. Santorum seems to dislike Mitt Romney on a personal level. -
Plenty of derogatory speech directed at minorities is still allowed. See: significant portions of Gingrich's campaign. What is "now being said against whites?"
-
The real persecuted minority in today's society are whites! Tex, why did you choose 1830? Why not 1860, when blacks were still slaves? Or 1960, when segregation was still legal? Or the 90's and the 2000's, when banks still discriminated against minorities over loan terms and conditions and blacks were routinely targeted by police in much higher percentages? Or the 2010's, when blacks still faced seriously disproportionate sentencing terms?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 01:43 PM) And hell, you're original statement was "Imagine if the other side did so how much of an outrage it would be". I imagine now you're going to spend your next several weeks cataloging hate radio just to make sure that we're appropriately outraged. The "well they do it too" is exactly the response the right-leaning media is using: stories of blacks killing or hurting whites, hyperventilating about the New Black Panthers, the "where are the marches against black-on-black crime?!" stories.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 01:18 PM) Man, imagine the outrage if this were a white person dropping N-bombs on the radio. http://www.wtsp.com/news/article/250102/8/...taff-apologizes It's also easy to imagine all of the right-wing blogs defending it. But yeah there's usually more outrage when historically oppressive groups use racial insults against the groups they historically oppressed.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 07:59 PM) Wow, NRO actually fired him. 1960's NRO is so disappointed in today's NRO. They fired another racist writer today. http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/04/1...w-race-problem/ Too bad all those race-baiters brought race unnecessarily into the media spotlight.

Who should Romney choose as VP candidate?

santorum seems to legitimately hate Romney. I can't see him being part of his team. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 11:33 AM) Um, you've seen the bounties on his head right? Do you blame him? George Zimmerman has yet to be charged with a crime.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 11:26 AM) No I get that. And i'm fine with arguing that the handling of the case initially was poor. But we're beyond that now. George Zimmerman seems to have disappeared and he still hasn't been charged with anything.

QUOTE (MAX @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) Why would you want a no trade contract if you are on the reds? leverage/ability to control where you go

Haven't numerous studies shown that cities and states never make their money back on financing sports stadiums for millionaire owners?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 08:54 AM) Such a huge portion of the Cubs value is tied up in Wrigley. Take the Cubs out of there, and they become any other MLB franchise. Any other MLB franchise (who wasn't won in over a century).
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 07:45 AM) Yeah, but do you really want to go off and start judging "Inappropriate/ill-informed political beliefs" to be detrimental to the league? His statements were detrimental to Marlins marketing and ticket sales. For that, the Marlins needed to do something to make a statement to their fans. It might well not change any of Ozzie's beliefs, he might still admire Castro for various reasons, and the league shouldn't be in a position of telling him that he cant' hold those beliefs. Edit: Should MLB have suspended the guy who did this, which could only be interpreted as a major statement in support of the Castro Regime? Right, no one would have really cared if he said this while managing the White Sox. In fact, we know they didn't. What he said is problematic for the Marlins because of where they are and what the demographics are.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 07:48 PM) Unfortunately, that's in the Bill of Rights. Be realistic. It wasn't (for sure) until about three years ago, nor was it for sure incorporated against the states.
