July 30th Game Thread - White Sox at Twins
iamshack replied to InTheDriversSeat's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 07:36 PM) Congrats to Ynoa. I know many will disagree but Avi has been one of the better Sox hitters of late That isn't a very high bar. -
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 07:30 PM) "In all probability" is a token Hahn phrase, too. I expect him to drop that 4-6 times as well. These tend to be lawyer phrases.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 05:14 PM) http://m.rangers.mlb.com/news/article/1926...deadline-nears/ Just something to keep in mind. Shin-Soo Choo is feeling better. This is the third time he's been on the DL this year though.

QUOTE (Deadpool @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 04:48 PM) It makes for reasonably good discussion, as Stone is asking Hawk relevant questions regarding his GM experience (short as it was) This has never been the focus of our broadcast before... -

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 04:45 PM) Hawk just said on the broadcast that the Rangers are trying to get Sale AND Quintana?? Huh? No way they would want to trade their entire farm for both...I mean, it would have to be like.... Odor, Gallo, Mazara, Tate, Brinson, Ortiz, Ibanez, and Cordell? I mean, that's never going to happen. It's interesting that he and Stone have been openly discussing this so much. -
I'll bet Gonzalez gets moved...presumably we could dump up to 4 starters...how awesome would that be? I would not be surprised to see one of Sale or Q and Gonzo get dealt.
-
Yeah, I mean obviously the odds are very unlikely that you'd be able to replace Sale and Q...ever. But I don't know that you have much of a choice, tbh. We aren't winning with them, so you've got to try it another way. If it were up to me, I'd move everyone of the supposed "core" with the exception of Abreu and Rodon, because of the down year they're having. Move Sale/Q/Eaton/Robertson and Cabrera. Maybe you keep Frazier around and gamble that he improves his value next year. Maybe do the same with Shields. You'd inject massive talent into the system and see how things develop over the next 18 months or so. You'd obviously have to put together a rotation beyond perhaps Rodon/Fulmer/Adams and other names, but if you have enough young assets and money, that can be done. I am so ready for this type of rebuild...it would be infinitely more hopeful and interesting than this current cast of characters.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 10:40 AM) This team is jack with Sale though. What would you suggest they do? Hold pat? I don't see how gradual improvements over the next three years will be enough when Chris will be exiting via free agency in 2020. Starting over is really our only option. Exactly.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 10:28 AM) This team is jack without Sale. We simply don't have the depth to absorb the blow without starting over. So trade everyone is the point?
-
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 09:28 AM) I think the price would be way too high and Sale speculation has been overblown. That's just my take. https://t.co/aXqX8Bn7js https://twitter.com/jcrasnick/status/759421362712739840 Unfortunately, I think he is right. A lot of writers understanding how to generate clicks.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 09:28 AM) For those that don't know the area, Kentucky is quite literally the first exit south of the ballpark, and it is WAY cheaper to live in than Ohio. And way more fun too

Haha...I mowed the lawn last Saturday morning...figure I have about 30k sq ft of grass. Took about 1:45 mins, but I had a fuel refill as well as some initial annoyances with the air filter. It came out gorgeous! Thinking I can do it every two weeks for the time being. Next on my list is a string edger and a backpack blower.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 08:53 AM) If they deal both (really big if), I'm hoping one to Boston in a deal mostly centered for bats and then the other moved to the Dodgers in a deal centered around arms. So imagine for a minute you are a GM and Rick is saying both Sale and Q are available for the right package. You are the GM that ends up getting Q and moving your best prospect, while some other GM is going to land Sale. Sort of makes you want to chip in more to land Sale, doesn't it? That will make for a very interesting dynamic....

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 07:52 AM) Honestly, it's almost too quiet on the Boston-Sale front, makes me think there could be serious discussions happening. I can't think of a more perfect pairing for a trade than our two teams. They need a top of the rotation starter and we need positional prospects. This tweet makes me cautiously optimistic. Also, I really feel like the Yankees could be a dark horse for Sale depending on what they get back in a potential Miller trade. Right now, they have some interesting pieces, but not the headliner you'd need in a Sale trade. If they got a guy like Giolito in return for Miller, suddenly they become a feasible trade partner. Giolito, Torres or Mateo, Sanchez, & Judge is a very solid starting point. The Yankees being a serious option for Sale might even get the Red Sox to up the ante. Not only that, but the way Sale's and Quintana's last few starts have gone are huge reminders of why we just cannot capitalize on this current roster construction. They practically have to be perfect to win. I will be disappointed if we don't take advantage of this opportunity.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 29, 2016 -> 10:26 AM) Here's Cameron's take http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/finding-a-f...for-chris-sale/ I don't understand the Profar deal; only 3 years of control and, frankly, "where's the beef?" Ok, so I am reading this article, and I understand the valuations of surplus value, but what stops me dead in my tracks are quotes like this: I don't know about you guys, but I need to see a bit more than I've seen out of Urias before I go and ascribe him $80 million in value over the next 6 years. Shouldn't there be some additional uncertainty factored into that valuation? Is the 40 innings he's pitched in the MLB REALLY enough to suddenly attribute THAT kind of value to his contract already? Personally, I think you've got to prove a little bit more before we start claiming "he gets you most of the way to Sale himself."
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 28, 2016 -> 12:56 PM) That's basically it. So the question is, do they take $100 million on Monday afternoon? No, the question is the Sox have a $100 million house they want $100 million for. Do they take $65 million for it?
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 28, 2016 -> 11:26 AM) I mean he's not some rookie. He now has over 1300 PA of 5 WAR caliber play. He's dirt cheap and he has an extra year of control versus Sale. Over the last season and a half he's been worth 9 WAR. He's really freaking good and he's still just 23. Fair enough. I didn't realize he had a track record that lengthy.
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 28, 2016 -> 11:09 AM) It's just one writer's opinion, but Dave Cameron in his annual trade value piece put Sale at #15 and Betts at #7. I can definitely see the logic in it, either way it's doubtful that Boston would trade Betts straight up for Sale, let alone add additional pieces. And a straight up Sale for Betts trade would be pointless on our end even if Boston was willing to do it. Yeah, I mean I get how one could reach that conclusion, but I think you've got to ascribe a bit more value to Sale's consistency over the last several years versus Betts relative "newness" to this level of performance.
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 28, 2016 -> 11:04 AM) Betts >> Bradley and has more value than Sale by himself, so not sure why Bradley is the untouchable one and Betts isn't. I really do not believe that.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 28, 2016 -> 07:56 AM) I think the issue I have with value right now is on this board nobody seems to give credit to the red sox that it's not just their top 5 picks, they are all top 100 or near top 100. So getting top ten prospects would be more important than getting 3 30-70 prospects elsewhere, even if you could get a top 100 prospect on its own for someone like Shields (GREAT value). Anyway, won't happen. But I'm very, very confident that moncada/benintendi will be very good. And Eaton I imagine will age well. Moncada/Benintendi/Anderson/Collins is a young core that I can say is worth building around and would not give any crap to Front Office if thye didn't pan out. Yeah, all teams' top 5 prospects are not created equal, that much is for certain. But what would you want beyond their top 2 guys? I wouldn't trade Sale for two top 10 guys and a few lottery tickets. Would you?
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 08:12 PM) Exactly. This entire thread is beating a dead horse lol Well, fair enough, but I did want to comment on the idea that the Red Sox are going to ask about a player like Sale or Q and then say we refuse to talk about our top 4 prospects. That's like showing up at the strip club and wanting to pawn off your old flatscreen for lap dances.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 07:00 PM) Especially with the Dodgers offering up Urias, other GMs really don't have a card to play. Also, the Sox should try and package Sale and Quintana each with one of Shields or Gonzalez and Robertson or Jones. They could truly ask the Dodgers or Red Sox for anything at that point. f*** that. They can ask for anything with either of Sale or Quintana. There is not one prospect in baseball that is anywhere near as valuable as either of them. And if there is a GM that disagrees with that, then that GM is not the right GM to trade with.
-
Well all I know is if I am Rick and another GM calls me and tries to tell me ANY of his prospects is not on the table for Chris or Jose, I'm just going to laugh and hang up. That is simply preposterous.
