QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 5, 2013 -> 12:37 PM) Nice work guys. These crack me up. I'd read a book written by John Norris. Funny that he spelled Trestman's name wrong And GB over SF 41-8?

9/4 White Sox vs Yankees game thread

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 09:17 PM) So great to see a new player go 2-for-4 in his debut. I could care less whether he went 0-4 or 2-4, considering where we are in the standings. What IS nice to see is whether these guys look like they actually have what it takes to be a major league player. In terms of Johnson and Webb, I look at their stuff, I look at the hitter's reactions to their stuff, their mound presence, etc. For the hitters, I am looking at how comfortable they appear in the box, how the ball comes off their bat, etc. Many times we've heard about guys in our system being the real deal, only to have them come up and look like they are literally "out of their league." I didn't get that impression with any of the guys who played their first game last night. Johnson was certainly a bit shaken up and nervous, but I'll give him a pass given the stage he was on last night. I hope to see him keep it together a bit more in his next start. -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 07:25 PM) Honestly, I wasn't impressed by Johnson. But he also looked really nervous there. I actually liked Webb out there more. He had some great movement on his slider, and was throwing 97. I lovvvved Johnson's stuff...I could care less that he got a bit rattled...hopefully he works out the throws to first, but I loved what I saw out if him tonight. -

Hawk implying he thinks Alexei will be traded in the offseason... -
It strikes me as a bit strange that we have rules in war...watching you guys argue that it's ok to blow eachother's heads off with guns and grenades, but once you pull out the chemicals, that is downright cheating. I see one common thread here...people are going to die there in unknown numbers regardless of what we do...seems to me the best decision in that situation is to stay the heck out of it then.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 11:22 AM) It's the auto upscale, I f***ing hate it too. You can turn it off. My new family room is bright as s*** so a plasma wont work, however I'll be watching the good s*** in the basement on the much larger plasma. Steve's article is gold, but the comments are better. Comcast has a "new" guide? Bulls***. Comcast has been raping me for years, why is it that I pay 250 per month? 2 f***ing TV's plus internet. I have the DirecTV premier package, and then each year I buy the Extra Innings and Sunday Ticket packages. I have 4 tvs. It comes out to $180 per month on average, which is a crapload considering I don't get internet from them or anything, but considering how much I follow my out of town sports teams, and how I like the flexibility of being able to DVR basically any show I want, I think it's probably worth it. I stay in more often than not these days, and so I chalk it up as an entertainment expense. Eventually I will probably switch more to an internet based system where I get a basic programming package from DirecTV and then just pay to watch the shows I want on Apple tv or something, but not quite ready to dive into that yet.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 11:13 AM) Yea, like I said it was a friend's tv so I wasn't going to mess with it. I personally have a plasma and love it, though the room is sometimes a bit too bright for it. I think Rock may be right...I noticed it a lot more on my fiancee's tv than my own...and she has a cheaper 42 inch that is probably 120 hz.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 09:40 AM) Can I just urinate? or turn the sprinklers on? Seems like there has to be a simpler solution in here That's what the catholic priests thought, too...and look how that turned out for everyone...
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 09:11 AM) I personally can't stand 240hz on LEDs. Maybe it was just my friend's tv but everything looked way too fake, it puts so much emphasis on the "front" objects that even movies/shows that I thought were high quality started to look like cheaply made soap operas with how it engineered everything. But again, it was 1 tv and my friends didn't notice until I pointed it out. The Soap Opera Effect

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 08:51 AM) Thanks Shack, I have been leaning Panny plasma as well with maybe a Samsung LED. Good to hear on the genie. Any issues with multiple rooms etc? Whole-home DVR for some reason seems like it SHOULD have issues. Well, sometimes not all of my programs that have been recorded on the various dvr's show up on the Genie, but this is rare. We moved and my dvr's were not hooked up for a few days, including a Sunday, when a lot of my shows record. So anyways, a few months later I go to start Mad Men, and I notice an episode is missing...I figure I missed it when we moved and so I go buy it on iTunes so I can watch it on Apple tv...next day I turn on the tv, and sure as s***, the episode is there...it was recorded on a different dvr somehow, and all the sudden reappeared in my playlist.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 08:45 AM) Heres another: I believe Steve had reviewed the Directv genie. It looks like I will be going that route, anyone else use that service? Any restrictions or annoyances? I've got the Genie and am very pleased with it. As for your question about tv's, I've always gone with Panasonic for plasma and I bought a 70-inch Sharp Aquos LED for my main room. Have been very pleased with it generally, although even at 240 Hz, I notice a bit of trailing when I am watching certain sports, with golf being the worst offender.

To any dog lovers....I highly recommend Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote...by far the best book about human and dog companionship I've ever read.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 08:04 PM) Honestly, I never thought I'd see this level of explicit racism and bigotry not just posted on soxtalk but defended by multiple other posters. Yes, I think they get it. It's called free speech. You don't have to agree with it, and you don't have to try and change their minds. And it shouldn't lead to constant insults, either.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 08:25 PM) Look at these "I guess they're biological" humans who all just love killing, bunch of brown muslim lunatics, clearly not nearly as worthy as human beings as good, white americans! It has nothing to do with valuing them less than Americans. It has everything to do with numbers and resources. What would you have us do, SS? Get pulled into each and every one of these conflicts until we're all in the same boat as well? Do you ever get to draw the line somewhere? Or as long as there is a human being suffering on this planet, are you going to post photos of them and insist we intervene? And honestly, tone down the f***ing dramatics.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 04:41 PM) Again, the discussion with Alpha wasn't about whether the US should intervene or not. If you'll notice, neither Balta nor I are supportive of military intervention in this thread. It was about his literal statement that he thinks the life of a Syrian is less valuable than the life of an American, and that people should intervene in humanitarian crises based on religion and skin color. Did Balta or I say NSS was racist for being against intervention? Or duke? Or ourselves? No, it was only the guy who came in and said he values human lives differently based on nationality, skin color and religion. There's nothing ironic about insulting racists and bigots. I don't think you're a racist or bigot, but Alpha pretty explicitly came out as one in this thread. I do think your reasoning in the above post was pretty s***ty, though. Yeah, there is no way one could possibly miss that, we get your point. Move forward.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 04:02 PM) The problem with that s***ty reasoning is that the overwhelming majority of Syrian people (or any other group of people caught in the middle of a violent struggle) are not "lunatics" who we should be happy are eliminated from the gene pool. No, they're not. But life on earth isn't fair. And making the choice to stay out of it doesn't mean we don't value them, as much as you might want to chastise all of us about it. Btw, you do realize how ironic it is when you behave this way, don't you? We're all th bad guys, yet you're the one calling us all names and flinging insults...
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 01:12 PM) Go back to where this conversation started. Read alpha's words. They're very explicit. He doesn't value their lives as highly as a random American life and thinks it's a brown-muslim-people's problem to deal with because Syrians are a bunch of brown muslims. You inexplicably don't find this racist. I think at this point many of you can predict what the others will say before they say it, and yet there is this moral outrage from you, as if you're struck incredulous every new day with some of these beliefs. I think that is the nerve you're standing on more than the actual criticisms you're making. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I'm shaking my head in here too, but do we really need to go through all the dramatics each and every time something like what Alpha posted is posted? You do know that half the time, he's trying to get a rise out of you, right? Ultimately, I kind of agree with Alpha. Not because I'm racist, but because I'm tired. Humanity is a species just like all the other species on earth. There is some percentage of us that is just made up of f***ing lunatics. We can't waste an incredible amount of limited resources trying to make these lunatics behave like the higher-thinking beings they probably should be behaving as. Over the course of evolution on this planet, the universe's answer to these idiots is to allow them to kill themselves and stop spreading their genes amongst the gene pool. Is it harsh? Of course. But can we really afford to be intervening in this nonsense in every instance at this stage of the game? I think we all know what the answer to that question is.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 07:12 PM) I just randomly did one of the yahoo $20 leagues where youre playing vs all strangers. No flex players or PPR or anything. Had the 6th pick and ended up with: Stafford McCoy, Chris Johnson, Matthews, DMC, Ingram Marshall, Fitzgerald, T. Smith, Jennings, Stevie Johnson Daniels, Bennett Janikowski Pats D Wow...nice -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 06:00 PM) What do you mean? Like I feel this vitriol about it because I've never put in a situation to cheat? If so, you could be right. I've never cheated because I really despise it, but I've never had a chance to cheat (probably because I don't put myself in those situations as well). Yeah, or people who don't have a lot of temptation don't understand what that is like. I had a very good friend when I was in my early twenties who was absolutely gorgeous. Everywhere we would go, dudes would be throwing themselves at her. Now I'm not saying her cheating was condoned, but if every time I went out I had chicks trying to f*** me, it might be a bit more of a challenge to remain faithful. The key is what you pointed out; trying not to put yourself in those positions. Sometimes, however, it s unavoidable.
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 05:08 PM) He is so nice that he pretends he doesn't have a wife while he cheats? LOL! How is that a good quality? Lots of guys cheat, maybe, a lots of guys are scumbags. Cheating is not just "something nice guys do". He's a s***stain. If he has a problem, then he needs to give his wife the option of finding a faithful lover or allowing him to atone by seeking professional help. You don't let an addict continue to be an addict while it hurts other people. I'm sorry, but your friend is a scumbag. I think generally your thoughts are on point, but I also find that the severity of this attitude is directly proportionate to opportunities to do so.

If I had to bet big bucks on it, my guess is she is the B word. Can't prove it obviously. Haha...you crack me up
