  1. I wonder what kind of change in results one would see due to current or past non-voters getting out to vote since they feel like their vote would actually count for something in a popular election. I don't know what is stronger, the desire to not vote because your candidate cannot win or the desire to not vote because it is a certainty your candidate will win (the electoral votes of your state).
  2. Sad to see him go, but happy to see him get promoted and happy to see we are doing some things right enough that other successful franchises are interested in our folks.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 10:43 AM) I really dont know if it changes. You cant show up to work drunk, you can get fired for that. I doubt a lot of businesses change the drug test policy even if it becomes legal everywhere Yeah, but marijuana stays in your system for weeks...you could be using it on a Saturday and be perfectly capable of working on a Monday morning. Then they test you that Thursday and you are positive for marijuana use without ever impacting yourself during working hours.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 07:54 AM) Now we are talking baseball reality. At the end of the day it is about winning. Josh Hamilton is probably the best position player out there to help a team win now. That has value above any other statistical number out there. And like it or not, comparative salary is a relative statistic for free agents and their agents. They are absolutely going to look at what comparable players got in terms of dollars per year in the last year. Those Prince and Pujols contracts will be the guidelines to some extent for the elite players in MLB's contract offers and requests, until other elite player signings reset the market. It doesn't matter how "bad" they are, they happened, and they are reality. In the free agent market, those contracts are more important than WAR or any other relative statistic. In free agency it is all about the comps. There are also other factors to consider, such as proving to other FA's that you are serious about winning, which in turn attracts them to your organization, often times for cheaper than what you might have got them without the marquee signing.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 11:48 PM) I think as fans that follow the team so closely, it is far easier for us to imagine the many bad ways for the next season to go. It's less objective and of course we don't look at others teams closely enough to see the cracks in their armor (real or imagined) It works both ways...the reason I was fairly confident of a rebound last season was because I could also imagine all the good things that could happen. I don't know about you, but I tend to believe that the more information you have about something, the better the chances of your analysis being accurate.
  6. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 10:47 PM) Huh? No one including us here on this site expected us to compete with Detroit. The fact that we did was all a bonus. I don't see how we are any worse off in 2013 than we were going in to 2012, in fact, I'd say we are better off because now Sale has the experience of a full year, Quintana emerged, our bullpen full of rookies got a year of experience in. I feel better going in to 2013 than I did last year, and that's what was expected. Well I expected us to compete and expected many of the turnarounds...the fact that it wasn't enough, coupled with the Tigers relatively mediocre performance in the regular season is somewhat frightening to me. I certainly hope that we can get the same kind of performances we did out of key components like we did last season, but I don't know that you can expect it. The question is not how did or does everyone "feel" about the White Sox going into the season. It is absolutely irrelevant what the performance of the team is compared to expectations by the mass media or fanbase. What is relevant is what is the talent level of the team, the performances we can get out of players at this stage of their careers, the resources available (including $ and players to move), etc., as opposed to our likely competition. I certainly hope I am wrong, but I fear the 2013 season may end up being the one many fans expected they would get in 2012.
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 01:07 PM) Romney just got the most important endorsement: Jay Cutler And I noticed President Obama didn't give any props to the offense tonight when asked about the Bears during halftime...
  8. I just feel like we sort of blew our load last year and came up short. Almost everything we needed to happen did happen...and it still wasn't enough...I just don't know that everything is going to fall into place like it did for us last season...
  9. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 06:40 PM) And both those deals were stupid and irresponsible. I'd rather burn a few good prospects by trading for a talented OF than dig myself in to a massive contractual obligation just because he is the only great FA outfielder. Even if the Rays had a $120M+ payroll, you would never see Andrew Friedman making an insane deal like the one Hamilton wants. Fortunately for Josh, there are teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, and Dodgers who give no f***s about overspending for players, and he may just end up getting what he wants from them. There will always be at least one stupid and irresponsible team out there though...pressure to win now, pressure for a marketable player, or just someone who gets a bit desperate and reckless...
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 04:15 PM) And with the Bears defense playing at an elite level that just makes no sense. If there is no good read, just throw the ball away. I dont know if there is a throw away stat, but my guess is that Cutler is on the low end. Yeah, he'll either force it in somewhere or just run towards the sideline and get hit for no gain...
  11. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 04:39 PM) Jay moved from the pressure, and instead of just throwing the ball away, thought he would be able to run away from Suh. Part of the OL's issue is Cutler, because he does a lot of odd things with the ball. Im pretty sure he was sacked on a screen play because after the rb route was messed up, he held onto the ball as if there was another option. Yeah, he doesn't ever give up on plays...
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 03:31 PM) Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi The more I think about it, #WhiteSox in strong position as offseason begins. Figure out C and 3B, maybe add an arm. Good team. Wow...I wish I could agree with him...
  13. Jim Durham, voice of the Bulls from 1973-1991, passed away yesterday at his home in Texas. RIP.
  14. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 02:49 PM) Welp, just put myself out there and sent a message to a girl I met while I was dressed up in my one-night-stand costume Saturday. Maybe I think too much, but I always worry about coming off as being a creeper by messaging a girl. I guess it's because I live with 2 girls, and they seem to judge any guy that is interested in them as a "creeper" (unless they are like, so totally hot, of course) and I am worried that all girls think like that, but f*** it. I figure I have never seen this girl before (that I know of), and I probably won't ever see her again if she isn't interested, so may as well give it a shot. Yeah, you're only a creeper if they aren't interested. If they are interested, you can be almost as much of a creep as is humanly possible and they will overlook it.
  15. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 01:49 PM) Woodson is far from their best coverage DB. First game this year Tramon Williams and Morgan Burnett covered Marshall. Woodson will probably be back for the Bears game anyways. It doesn't matter who is covering Marshall if Jay is afraid to look up the field every time he drops back...
  16. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 12:15 PM) I predict a very close popular vote with Obama barely leading there. But because I think he'll take Ohio and PA, the EC vote won't be as close. I think he wins with 290+ EC votes, and once PA and OH are called it'll be just about over. Yeah, Nate Silver is right there with you...
  17. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 11:31 AM) Just curious how much did you bet into that? $50 Packers -10/Ravens -3.5/Texans -10.5/Bears -5/Broncos money line/Raiders -2 $50 to pay $1456.50
  18. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 11:00 AM) Matthews is a beast, but it's really Green Bay's offense and special teams that kill the Bears. Their offense never turns the ball over and their punter neutralizes Hester. The Bears offense never gets a short field to work with, unlike every other opponent where the Bears have a couple 10-yard scoring drives and/or the defense just goes ahead and scores. The Bears could very well end up 13-3 with two losses to Green Bay and lose the division on tiebreaker. Yeah, the Packers' offense just seems to play pretty clean against us...Rogers is so accurate at throwing across the middle that we don't seem to get too many of those deflected or tipped passes to pick off...but we have held them in check pretty well in the last several games...their ability to shut down our offense seems to be almost as big or a bigger concern to me, because we can't seem to protect our quarterback against them.
  19. QUOTE (Boogua @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 11:09 AM) Why not hedge at that point? I should have hedged at the half of the Raiders-Bucs game. I didn't have enough time before the start of the game because the Packers/Titans/Ravens/Broncos games were all going down to the end (in terms of covering the spread). But the Raiders were up 10-7 at half and honestly I could have put $500 or so on the Bucs in the second half to hedge. But I was too lazy to get up and run out to the book...so I have no one to blame but myself.
  20. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 08:03 AM) I think this Bears team is a favorite to beat anybody except Green Bay. The Packers somehow manage to neutralize the defensive turnover machine. I agree...we can't ever slow down the long blonde-haired guy...
  21. QUOTE (RZZZA @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 10:36 PM) Good job bud. I had a Bears/Packers/Texans parlay that hit today. Won $160 I had a 6 team parlay for fun...hit the first 5 in the morning...had the Raiders in the afternoon -2....then they allowed Doug Martin to run through them like it was a high school game...$1500 down the drain...boo hoo.
  22. QUOTE (Carter224 @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) Im picking EVERY game each week. Straight up winners. I still have Dallas and New Orleans to go this week, and the only game I missed was picking Washington. If my picks hold, this will be the third week this season I only picked one game wrong. Ive made about $350 so far. Oh, straight-up winners is much different...boooo
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 06:34 PM) Yeah, the guy has never even put together a single full season performance. Brandon has looked great since his surgery, but he has way too much left to prove for me to put much more than 5-6M a year in him. If you signed him for 3/$18 or so I think it would be one hell of a deal...I don't think it's happening.
  24. QUOTE (Carter224 @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 08:21 PM) I just need Dallas to win so I can lock up two more pick ems this week. I am picking NFL games at 80% so far through week 9, so that's pretty awesome. Start posting them...80%, even for 9 weeks, is insane. You're picking 2 games a week?
  25. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 01:24 PM) Trap game my ass The trap game happened last week...I read that we would be overlooking the Titans this week and thought that was ridiculous. Having the Bears struggle with Carolina last week was the worst thing that could have happened to Matt Hassleback...
