Anyone think Robin will get fined for bumping the s*** out of Joyce? -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 25, 2012 -> 06:09 PM) Quintana did get squeezed there in the first and this inning (granted, he's a rookie and his control was shaky but he wasn't getting anything). Those strike calls against Dunn were ridiculous. Ventura about as mad as he's ever been as Sox manager about the umpiring. What's Harrelson saying? May have been a carryover to not getting the call there from Humber against Smoak last night. That he's never seen a worse two innings by the home plate ump and that the tape will be sent to the League offices. -

That last pitch was right over the middle of the f***ing zone. It would have taken a lot for me not to punch Lance Barrett. -

QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Aug 25, 2012 -> 05:53 PM) This could very well cost Colletti his job within a year or so. How he didn't get money back on this is unbelievable. One gets the feeling this was way over Colletti's head and was something Ownership had their hands in... -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 25, 2012 -> 10:30 AM) For whatever reason they keep coming up with the cash. I didnt think it was possible before they ran out and grabbed Yu Darvish, but it seems like that ownership group is intent on spending with the big boys Wherever Hamilton goes, if he goes to a big city he is probably going to hire a service like Aerosmith did to keep him away from the drugs I will volunteer to ingest and consume his share of drugs and booze when we go out with Playboy Bunnies for nights on the town.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2012 -> 03:36 PM) I can't imagine the Sox have the bullets in their minors to get Upton, and Viciedo wouldn't get through waivers to them. Neither would Upton. There isn't a chance in hell he would fall to us.

I wouldn't say it is awesome for the Red Sox...they did trade some nice pieces to get AGon in the first place, lost a pretty good draft pick to sign Crawford, etc. Obviously they shed the salary which is probably a good thing, but it is more righting some of their previous missteps than some awesome deal they pulled off. I can understand the desire by the Dodgers to get AGon, and my guess is Beckett fares better in the NL than in the AL, but that Crawford contract, even though I don't think it will end up being as horrendous as it appears to be now, is awfully frightening. -
It's going to depend on who's throwing the best at the time. We have no way of knowing who that will be now.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 10:37 PM) Here's the thing, everyone complaining now would have been complaining had Ventura stuck with Humber and he blew the game, they would have wondered why the closer wasn't used, its a tight playoff race, its obvious Humber didn't have it..........At least they came back and won. Its too bad Humber put the Sox in the situation where it was even a consideration he get lifted. I know DA has me on ignore so he won't see this, but this is just nonsense. I highly doubt there would be a huge line of people ripping Ventura for allowing Humber to try and face at least one more hitter. People would have been pissed at Humber at that point, yes, but not really Robin. Even if Humber had faced Robinson and given up a home run at that point, you STILL have a 2-run lead with no one on base, and then you bring in Reed with the bases empty and 1-out witb a 2-run cushion. That would hardly be putting him in a rough spot. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 10:34 PM) I just dont think Humber has earned the trust this season to get the benefit of the doubt after he gives up a homer and then a walk. I'm most disappointed in reed and the pitch calling. He was killing the Yankees with the straight change and he tries to blow away Jaso with three straight fastballs. Mind boggling I would buy that argument if you had a better option to bring in than Veal against a righty and a cold Reed. Humber has shown on several occasions this year where he will struggle a bit initially before settling down. He was nowhere near in danger of blowing that lead when he was pulled. I can understand pulling him before he gets in that danger, but not if you don't have a better option to bring in at that point. As for the pitch selection to Jaso, I couldn't agree more. Obviously Reed couldn't throw anything else for a strike at that point, but they certainly should have tried at least one offspeed pitch in that situation IMHO. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:25 PM) He had that ball in his glove for a good 2-3 steps before the collision (just watched the replay 2-3 times). It won't be overturned, but it was a catch IMO. DEPENDS on the definition of "immediately following." Two or three strides with the ball, to me, isn't immediately following or simultaneously. Two-three steps take literally a second or less...pretty sure that is the meaning of "immediate" when it comes to baseball. This isn't track and field or something. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:23 PM) I agree. People complain about slow hooks, they complain about quick hooks. I personally like the quick hook. Humber wasn't good tonight. Veal gave up a hit to the only batter he faced and Reed didn't have it. I don't know how that's on Ventura, but a few people here know how to manage a lot better than he does, and after the fact, if what he does didn't work, they'll let you know their genius. Blah...every time you bring in another arm you risk entering into the equation a guy who "doesn't have it" tonight. With a 5 run lead you don't need to manage the game like it's a 2-run lead. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:20 PM) I really don't think he did. Humber needs to grow a nut and get 3 outs. Veal, one pitch double to a .239 hitter. And reed walks two and gives up 5 runs. This one is on the players to me. Robin has had bad nights but I didn't think this was one of them It's easy to second guess...but we were up 4 runs still with a man on first...at the very minimum you give him one more hitter...I was angry enough we even had to use Reed, let alone before he blew the lead. Humber gave up a home run to a good hitter, got an easy out, and then walked Smoak on a couple of high curve balls when the guy's swing is so long right now I don't know why you are even throwing curve balls. Sometimes s*** happens and you're not going to get a 1-2-3 inning....but no need to panic with your pitcher when he records 1 out in the first three batters with a 5 run-lead in my opinion... -
I think I just lost a few years off my life.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:17 PM) Yup, this can't be all on Reed. Robin has to be able to put his players in a position to succeed, like all managers, he managed that 9th inning so poorly, I don't even have words to describe it. Was Reed even warm? Talk about an overreaction to take out Humber. -
Not sure if that was good or bad.

Bowden/Law/Olney rank Sox 21st in Future Power Ratings

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 02:24 AM) People, it's obvious Law was wrong about Sale. But he doesn't pick on the White Sox. When was the last time the Sox hit on a first round pick? I didn't even have hair on my nuts last time that happened before Sale. The criticism, mostly, of the Sox drafting pedigree and overall system is justified. The problem comes in when he starts deliberately finding fault with players the White Sox draft for that reason alone, which, one can seemingly begin making a case for in the last few drafts... -

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 10:25 PM) And this is a prime example of why Keith Law doesn't work in baseball, and shouldn't. If you want to express alarm over Sale's mechanics and thus his longevity, I can see that. Kind of. But rating Sale's slider as a 40? Sorry, you haven't a clue what you're talking about. Full stop. Law working as a minor league guru for ESPN is as cushy a job that exists. When they're not farming out their minor league "analysis" to Baseball America, who the hell else is ESPN going to ask about minor league prospects? Jim Bowden? Jayson Stark? Keith Law can be a ignorant, raging dickhead all he wants because there is approximately no one at ESPN who knows jack s*** about the minor leagues. Curt Schilling stated yesterday that Chris Sale's arm slot actually should allow him to be more healthy, similarly to Randy Johnson. Obviously Curt is a member of the media just as Law is, however, Schilling actually was one of the better pitchers of his era and might know a thing or two about pitching... -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 02:58 PM) Since this has been more of a general job/career thread than just a "job hunt" thread, i'll add my good news: I settled my first major case a couple months ago and it all got wrapped up this week. $975k on a million dollar policy for the death of a subcontractor on a construction site. He left a minor daughter but no other heirs. Wasn't expecting my firm to give me anything out of it, but I ended up getting a decent bonus and a ~15% raise. Pretty stoked as I was really starting to get worried about paying for daycare for my new kid. Would have been REALLY nice if I had referred the case to the firm, but still a nice surprise. Congrats!!

Gordon has not been good offensively. No one can dispute that. What Balta is pointing out is you have to prioritize your offseason decisions, and at a traditionally weak offensive position, and considering the defense Gordon seems to play at 2b, replacing him is a fairly low priority. We've got big decisions to make in the starting rotation, as well as at 3b and catcher. Chances are, we will not have adequate resources to make a significant upgrade at 2b; that would be more of a luxury for our Club right now, considering the other issues.
