Now that I think about it...it's probably a great pitch to teach guys like Mark or Danksy...that don't have good curveballs to begin with...but guys with a good yacker, you'd just as much not mess with that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 07:23 AM) I believe we've heard Hawk have a similar discussion this year. I think they specifically referred to that regarding Humber...that he was trying to throw an ineffective cutter and Cooper got him to drop it and focus on the slider. Gavin Floyd is an interesting case, because he may well be one of those guys who gets away from the curveball or even loses control of the curveball at times when he's really using the cutter. I think that's a pretty good philosophy that the O's are advocating. It needs to be a case-by-case basis, obviously, but I think our organization is probably finding out that the cutter is not a good pitch for everyone. With Gavin, I think he would be better off without it. It appears to have had a very bad effect on Phil Humber, because he struggles to throw his curveball for strikes anymore.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 10:00 AM) Turns out there is a reason for that... Chuck Garfien @ChuckGarfien Correction about my Adam Dunn stat from yesterday. 17 of his 34 HRs have come with White Sox tied or within a run. Sorry about that. That seems more reasonable. I wonder how many have come when we were just plain losing or tied though...

QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 09:57 AM) Basically yes. He was actually my most important reference for this job (former boss in similar work) so I couldn't replace him. They honestly told me they would call references for the top 1 or 2 candidates, so I knew a reference check wasn't a guarantee. I also knew they were moving very quickly and any delay could cost me. It's possible that it made no difference. I might have been the back up regardless. But it's tough to hear they went with someone with more experience when they didn't talk to my best reference that could vouch for my experience. I did have 2 other glowing references. It was just a job, not a great career move or anything. In fact, it was more of a backup. I have 2 weeks to prepare for a huge interview so we will see... Maybe you should send them a counteroffer to suck your dick...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 07:06 AM) Chuck Garfien @ChuckGarfien 25 of Adam Dunn's 34 home runs have come when White Sox are either down a run or tied. That is absolutely incredible.

QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 04:30 PM) As predicted... Rejected. By phone call which is new. Sorry to hear that, G&T...so they started checking your references, and then just hired someone else before they even got to talk to your friend?

QUOTE (kev211 @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) God I think the Nationals are stupid for shutting strasburg down. That will significantly hurt their playoff chances, when the chances of Strasburg getting hurt are slim. In this day in age in baseball if you have a chance to win the series, you take it. I think that is the view held by most. Listening to Mitch Williams and Leo Mazzone's comments recently has been great.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 09:08 AM) This Belarus woman had her gold stripped from her in shotput That looks like Francis from Pee Wee's Big Adventure!

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 08:55 PM) We found a nice place on craigslist and went to see a few places this past week, settled on one this afternoon and put a deposit down for it. $1150/mth for a 2br, rehabbed and in a nice area of Rogers Park, 2 blocks west of the metra station. I'm happy, it's affordable, nice, and the location is safe and quiet with access to the ragers at other people's apartments. Congrats, Russ!

Need Liri to dominate tomorrow.

This tells me there are still quite a few players taking things they shouldn't be.

There is a great article on Kenny on ESPN Chicago too... ESPN Chicago
-
Good article. And now we can put all the concerns about moving guys around in the lineup to bed. No one really gives a s***.

Saw The Campaign tonight...both Ferrell and Galifianakus play the exact same roles as every other movie they are in, but damn, I still laughed my ass off.

Yeah, settle down...you should have seen me on my second day trying to learn how electricity was scheduled across the West

He'll probably be up next week

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) That is an extreme reach. He wasnt taking these kids to bowl games to recruit them to PSU, he was taking them to commit sodomy, which is a crime in the United States. This in comparison to boosters, illegal benefits, illegal contact, which the NCAA generally governs, because it is not against US law. I really dont care that much to be honest. It seems really odd that you would take that position...but I don't really care either.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 8, 2012 -> 03:34 PM) Its unusual because generally the argument for penalties are that the athletic team got some sort of tangible benefit from the bad behavior. It is also unusual because generally the NCAA does not suspend schools merely for a coaching/administrator breaking the law, in a way that is unrelated to sports (Bobby Petrino Arkansas, etc.) I think there is a legitimate question why the NCAA is involved at all. The only connection to the NCAA is it happened on PSU property. It literally has nothing to do with competition or anything that the NCAA normally governs. I have no idea, Im not even sure a school has ever sued the NCAA. There are probably hundreds of thousands of documents that govern this, Ive seen 0. This is purely theoretical. Well, Sandusky took kids to NCAA bowl games...the entire basis for Sandusky being able to do this revolved around the fact that he coached at an NCAA Division 1 football school. It has everything to do with the NCAA...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 09:44 AM) I think the biggest difference there is the NL Central vs the NL East. I think part of the reason the finish for the Marlins is so different is the division they are in really tough. Again, I tend to agree, but the Reds have been one of the best teams in baseball, not just one of the best teams in the NL Central.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 09:34 AM) They have a ton of talent. They just don't have a manager that can always get the most of it. I tend to agree, but seriously, what were peoples' opinions of Dusty Baker when he took the Reds job? Baseball is a funny game...I am always very hesitant to write anyone off prior to a season beginning.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 08:02 AM) Without another big spending splurge, can you convince me that team has any real shot at being better next year than it was this year? I disagree...they can certainly turn things around and compete. A lot of people not particularly familiar with the White Sox organization would have said the same thing about us coming into this year. Heck, a lot of people that are very familiar with the White Sox organization said that this year.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 08:52 PM) True. The problem is they appear to have the Sox number. They mowed us down pretty efficiently that recent sweep in Detroit. Tonight was a tough loss. It's not easy for the Sox to win road games against East teams (except Boston for some reason before this season) and we get a stellar start from Peavy but can't muster 3 runs. Tomorrow's game is key. We need to even this series up before Toronto gets that sweep look in its eye. You think everyone has the Sox' number.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 08:38 PM) If there are two players in the majors that I always expect to hit into a DP in clutch situations, it's Juan Rivera and Escobar Yeah, you just wonder if they would even get a chance to roll up into one.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 08:24 PM) Exactly, he over-managed. Also, the fact that Escobar leads their team with 15 double plays hit into and Cooper's hit into one was why I was hoping they'd walk him there. Takes some big stones to load the bases up with Jones in.
