It seems to be that a defensive metric that requires more than an entire year to prove any sort of accuracy is useless in an awful lot of cases.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 09:55 AM) While in Vancouver we climbed to the top of Grouse Mountain. Felt very accomplished afterwards and the view was great. Trail Facts Length: 2.9 kilometres (1.8 miles) Elevation Gain: 853 metres (2,800 feet) Base: 274 metres above sea level (900 feet) Summit: 1,127 metres (3,700 feet) Total Stairs: 2,830 Statistics: Annually, over 100,000 people hike the trail. Average Time: On average it takes up to an hour and a half to complete the hike. For novice hikers, two hours is recommended. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 09:05 AM) My response is simple...Beckham is paid $450k right now. He fills a role and has been "Better than Brent Morel", if you want to put it that way. If you have an obviously better option, great, let's try it...but do the cost benefit analysis otherwise. If it costs $5 million to get slightly better production than Beckham, $10 million to get significantly more production, and you have to go with Brent Morel as your starting 3b or Tyler Flowers as your starting C to afford to upgrade over Beckham, are you really getting a good return on that investment? Next year, Beckham will get paid maybe $2 million or so in arbitration, give or take. At that point, then he's starting to cost more, but still gives you the ability to spend money on those other holes. But if his production next year is just like this year, again, by the time he finishes next year then his cost will be high enough that you wouldn't offer him arbitration again. So let's just be annoyed when he's up because of what might have been, but let's really sit down and think about it before we call him a detriment to the team. A guy who is a fill-in level player isn't carrying a team, but if having him there cheaply lets you fill a role with someone more expensive, then he's not a detriment, he's "tolerable" or "a stop-gap" or something like that. I think you're hitting this nail right on the head. Replacing Gordon is not a priority this year unless something happened which could accomplish that without expending any of our resources. I cannot foresee that occurring.

Isn't it partially based on how many balls outside of your zone you get to? Which is entirely dependent on how many balls outside of your zone are actually hit to your position? Maybe that is the old metric... I would like to see our defensive positioning varied a bit...we don't seem to move our fielders around nearly as much as some of the more saber-heavy teams...I wonder if that has something to do with it. Finally, Gordon's arm enables him to make a lot of plays that other 2b's cannot or do not make. I don't know that the current metrics can account for that.

The ultimate goal is to select the guy that gives you the best chance to win in the NFL. NFL teams have shown they value size and tools over college experience or production. At this stage, I don't think there is anything either guy can do to make it absolutely clear that he will succeed, therefore, you have to go with the limited information you have. Of that information, there is more to show Flynn would likely succeed than Wilson, as Flynn's success, albeit limited, has occurred in the NFL, while Wilson's has not. Thus it seems as though Flynn would be the choice, at least to get the first crack at it. However, if Seattle feels as though Wilson's size and/or tools would given them the best chance to win, then they should choose him. It would be hard to reach that conclusion, seemingly, since many other teams obviously did not seem to feel that would be the case.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 20, 2012 -> 12:01 PM) But if you don't do that...then you wind up with the Jets last year. Santonio Holmes, for example, wasn't all that happy with his stats and he made that clear on the field. Then don't sign whiny players and don't sign them to incentive-packed contracts.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 20, 2012 -> 11:54 AM) The real problem is when those egos and paychecks start impacting your ability to score points. Thankfully, no one would have said that was a recent problem for the Jets, right? Well that is my point...you can't allow the paychecks and incentives clauses to determine what personnel you utilize and what offense you call.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 20, 2012 -> 11:49 AM) Sure. But me and you dont have to deal with egos and paychecks. That's why they all make the big bucks...and not our piddly paychecks.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 20, 2012 -> 11:31 AM) Not only starting QB, but also running backs. It would piss off a lot of people, really. You are basically asking the offense to shoulder the load of going the length of the field only to hand off to a quarterback that cannot throw because he is famous and fast. Shouldn't matter. Whatever is the best way to score points is the way you should utilize your personnel.

I'm getting really tired of facing this long-haired bum...let's get him early so I don't have to look at his ugly ass for 6 or 7 innings.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 08:46 PM) Who should the Sox be rooting for, Tampa or Anaheim this weekend? Doesn't matter who they root for...it will have no effect on which team wins

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 07:40 PM) Wonder if the Sox would ever consider a three-man broadcast booth, throw Wimpy in there with Hawk and Stony to liven things up a bit. You can just tell Wimpy would love to be back in the thick of things. My friend and I were discussing this the other day. I believe both NY teams have 3-man booths. I'll bet we are too cheap.

I never realized something about the early 90s Sox
iamshack replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They were one of the winningest teams over the span of 18-20 years actually...behind like the Braves and the Yankees....I believe. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 09:44 AM) Danks and Buehrle both used to feature curve balls. Good ones Nowhere near what a guy like Floyd throws. Danks and Mark featured curveballs. But that was never their bread and butter. It might be John's 4th best pitch, after his changeup, fastball, and cut fastball. Mark used his a bit more prominently maybe, but it certainly was not the pitch that often defined his performance like it is with a guy like Floyd or Humber.
