QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 11:41 AM) And whether or not Hawk went off, it would have been a discussion in local media. It was a terrible, terrible call that had a major impact on a game. I think the reason it is being discussed more for the rant and not the quality of the umpire's call is because this is the Hawk Harrelson thread and not a thread about that game or that particular call. I'm not trying to be a dick, just trying to answer your question... As to what the media is focusing on, Harrelson freaking out is obviously a bigger story than an umpire missing a call, whether that be to a local audience or a national audience.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 10:21 AM) Blowing solves everything. I tell that to my wife all of the time. I'll bet you even call it your hard drive...
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 10:17 AM) Too bad that doesn't work in today's world. "My hard drive completely crashed but I pulled it out and blew on it. Works perfectly again!" Notice the sexual innuendo...

White Sox are actually favorites tonight, at -130

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 10:59 AM) You're lucky the Mariners can't score runs. He didn't say which pitcher he took in the bet...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 11:07 AM) I totally agree that there are actions he "Could" take, there's just very little he'd be motivated to do over anti-umpire ranting, because acting against a team's broadcaster in a way that would strongly punish him would be a major new action from MLB, and I don' tthink they'd be willing to do that Ok then...I guess we can sit here and speculate til the end of time what actions they "could" or "would" take. I'm just telling you what rights the Commissioner has the legal right to take.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 09:51 AM) If they don't want that, then they could have established/standard rules involving warnings being issued to both teams prior to umpires ejecting players. I know we don't hear if they discipline or talk to umpires, that's private, but if they don't want a Hawkrant, then don't give him reason to. Otherwise, you better be prepared to fine or fire him. You won't get any disagreement from me regarding the call. But umpires are going to make bad calls; they're human. A little griping by a broadcaster is fine...the broadcasters are human too. But that doesn't mean MLB has to deal with broadcasters using this particular forum to let the entire viewing audience know their personal opinions on the competency of the umpires. The point is, there are legal actions Selig could take here.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 09:46 AM) Punitive action against Harrelson is the one thing they could practically do, but seriously, are they going to want the spectre of MLB stepping in and firing a broadcaster for ranting about the umps? No. Which is why Bud talked to Jerry and then they both talked to him and told him to avoid the crazy rants in the future. Do you think they want all these news websites playing video of a broadcaster for an MLB team screaming that their umpires are incompetent?
-
If Hawk is an employee of the White Sox, I believe Selig can actually fire him under the MLB Constitution. MLB Constitution

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 09:33 AM) I'm pretty sure the contract with Comcast runs through something like 2019, and the White Sox happen to be part owners of that network. There's just no realistic way that could go down. They can put pressure on him, but there's nothing they can do other than giving him a good talking to, unless they're willing to fire him or have the right to fine him for on-air comments that aren't offensive but bother the league. Just because they have a contract doesn't mean Comcast can employ someone that is ripping the League or its umpires...I am sure there are some rights the League can exercise legally.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 09:23 AM) Can't tell if serious...will respond as though it was. Yeah, that's right, MLB is going to take a team's games entirely off the air because of a broadcaster disagreement. I'm responding from a legal standpoint, which is what I thought you were looking for. In a realistic standpoint, Bud would put pressure on his pal Jerry to make him shut the hell up or be fired. That is basically what happened here. If for whatever reason Hawk continued to do this, and Jerry refused to muzzle him, yes, I imagine Major League Baseball could license the games to another station which would not crack down on the League's umpires in the middle of broadcasts.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 09:20 AM) What are they going to do if he goes on another, fire him? They could probably refuse to license the ability of Comcast to disseminate the game if he is calling it.
-
Oh boy...sounds like that will be the last of his rants...

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 09:06 AM) Good firm, but tough to get a job. And they're pretty notorious for hiring clerks and then stringing them along before letting them go without a full-time associate position. Yeah, I have no aspirations of working there.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 08:13 AM) Cooper does also have a rep for helping build guys not named Peavy into innings-eaters. How long before Volquez hits FA? I'm sure he would be available from the Padres at the deadline. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 07:15 AM) Are you still with this firm, and do they handle medical malpractice claims? No, I'm not. However, one of their partners is a family friend, so I could certainly put you in touch with them. They handle lots of medical malpractice claims...however, they usually only take very lucrative cases...6 figure cases or more...if they are lower impact cases, they refer them to other firms. If you'd like to PM me, feel free...I'd be happy to put you in touch with the right man.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 31, 2012 -> 07:17 PM) Edinson Volquez is someone I could see KW and Cooper liking I'd love to take a shot with him...even when he does frustrate, he seems to always be able to limit the damage. However, if you need an innings eater, he's probably not your man. -
