  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 05:44 PM) completely kills off the used book market. The used books are still far more than $14.99!
  2. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 02:27 PM) Basically it says that the anabolic steriods reversed the degeneration effect of muscles that had been torn for 6 weeks. Muscles after this time begin to shorten and wast away and build up fatty deposits in them. The anabolic steriods reversed these conditions and allowed the researchers to "pull" the tendons together to re-attach them. This is the first valid and reliable study to show the anabolics can help reverse the effect of injuries to muscles. It gives really good insight as to what physiologic effects they have on muscles other than hypertrophy. Oh darn, you beat me to it by about 5 seconds...
  3. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 03:39 PM) http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/...false-identity/ Keeping you up to date on Dominican Pitcher name changes: Leo Nunez = Juan Carlos Oviedo Fausto Carmona = Roberto Hernandez Heredia There is an update to the article which states that Carmona is actually 31, not 28...
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 12:22 PM) pple's new textbook software is amazing and revolutionary... for their profit margins since you can only use those textbooks on an iPad. If you REALLY want to be revolutionary, open it up to the world. time for Google to step up and create a TRUELY open next generation digital textbook platform. Whether it's open or not...I would have loved this in college and law school.....for the prices students currently pay for textbooks, they could buy a new ipad every year loaded with the books already on there...
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 12:08 PM) There was certainly a financial benefit to both of us when we moved in together but it wasn't the main reason for going forward with it....and it never should be. Of course not...if that is your reasoning, you should get a roommate. But there are certainly other factors that can influence the timeline of these things. My girlfriend is doing a lot of hinting lately...which is why I ask...we've only been dating a bit over 3 months...

QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) 1. Not really. I guess working for a power generation plant or water reclamation wouldn't be that bad.(except for the foul smell) 2. I'd prefer to stay in the Chicago area, but I'm open to moving to certain areas of the country if necessary. I realize that the jobs might not be here. I'm giving myself another month or so to look for jobs in Chicago, but if I don't get an interview or even a call back in that time, I'll start looking nationwide for jobs as well, location be damned. Slim, There are a ton of positions where you would be valuable in the utility industry, not just in plants or a reclamation plant. Utilities all have Renewables departments where you would be very valuable. I work on the trading floor of a utility and we have people from all sorts of backgrounds here...and the workforce is very geriatric in general so they are always people retiring.
  7. QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 11:01 AM) 4 months, it was of great financial benefit for me to move in with her that quick. This is something I am glad someone was willing to mention.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) Perfectly fine with it. We're happily married and I wouldn't have changed anything. Some of you might be appalled by that timeline but things are way different when you're in your mid 30s compared to your 20s. I think everything just resolves around your own personalities. You can find happy couples that have taken just about any route you can dream up; there is no "right" or "wrong" way. Perhaps more conventional, but not wrong.
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 10:45 AM) Basically moved into her place within 4 months. Bought a condo together about 3 months after that. Sqwerty! And how do you feel about that timeline now, looking back?
  10. So...fellas....how long did you date your girlfriend/wife before you asked her to move in or you moved in to her place?

    Job Hunt Thread

QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 04:16 AM) I have been looking for those type of positions. I realized about 2nd semester junior year that this was the case with the alt energy companies. BP isn't hiring until September, neither is Shell. I went to their website and it said so on their "Students/Recent grad" tab. I also don't know if they'd even consider me due to the fact that my undergrad research experience was so heavy on alt energy stuff. It just seems like something that they wouldn't want in a candidate to me. Don't shy away from positions due to their experience requirements. Keep in mind, that is the ideal candidate the hiring manager would like to find...it doesn't mean those candidates actually exist. As long as they don't require 5+ years in something, I would go ahead and apply. Worst thing they can do is dump your resume. And who knows...all you need is one hiring manager to be interested... Something else...have you looked into working for a public utility? Are you willing to relocate?
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 16, 2012 -> 01:46 AM) It was uncomfortable listening to Twins telecasts last season as Dick Bremer and, to a lesser extent, Bert Blyleven spent most of the three hours nightly trying to explain away the 99 losses as something other than a disaster wrought upon the public by the front office. Apparently, they did have permission slips to denigrate Kevin Slowey. Injuries and Slowey's attitude -- those were about the only factors that could be identified by the long-serving duo for this fine baseball organization to have fielded the worst team in the American League. And we can't forget that a Bremer-Blyleven telecast is always rich with the fable that there's a Twins Way of playing baseball: exceptional fielding, being smart and aggressive on the bases, and throwing strikes. No matter that you have to go back to 2006 to find a Twins team that stuck to those principles ... Dickie B. remains shocked over boots in the field, screwups on the bases and 3-1 cookies from Nick Blackburn. Try as they might, Bremer and Blyleven have been second-rate homers when compared to Mike Greenlay (analyst) and Dan Terhaar (play-by-play) on Wild telecasts. I'm not sure which number is consistently higher: Tiger Woods' estimate of his putts that "lipped out" after a poor round of golf, or the total number of penalties per game that Greenlay sees as being missed against an opponent and/or unfairly called against the Wild. startribune.com/sports REUSSE That's funny, because I specifically remember posting something about the comments Dick and Bert were making about Slowey...they rip him incessantly.
  13. I really need to see what kind of "passing coach" they hire and whether Tice stays before I assign any kind of value to Forte yet. He's an extremely talented pass-catching back and very good at running outside of the tackles, but if we're going to run a more traditional offense than with Martz, I think Forte's value in the Bears' scheme drops considerably.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) yes, if you like to purchase your art from truck stops in oklahoma. And it's on a nice velour background...
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 06:42 AM) The "interview" is just an excuse to get Super Bowl tickets
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 09:15 AM) The future and openness of the internet within the very county in which you reside. It = important. I think he was joking...Wikipedia is blacked out today.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 05:41 PM) Worst Football Fan Tattoos Many of you will recognize me with the Raider tattoos on my face. Marko, when did you get the Tebow tattoo on your shoulder blade?
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) Isn't that what Starlin Castro was doing with that chick in his apartment? Buh Bump Bump!
  19. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 03:43 PM) Offseason conditioning. Is that like riding a snow machine?

You guys are beating Don up a bit here, jeesh. GPAs are less important than one would think, but if he got a 4.0 that is definitely something that shows he can consistently succeed and is a responsible, hard-worker. It's definitely not something I would overlook if I was a potential employer.
  21. QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Jan 16, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) Of course they are going to continue to be doubted, and that's fine with me and I'm pretty sure it's fine with the players. As a Sox fan, I'm used to it and don't see anything wrong with it. As a fan, it isn't about all that nonsense you pointed out, it's about your team winning, that simple. And although you might think people want to see Eli, according to polls about 65% of America thinks it will be the Niners in the Superbowl............usually people vote on what they want to see. Then don't be so defensive about them. Every post about the Niners you and Obama come running to their rescue with some sorry defense for why they are the greatest team ever, which is why so many people were rubbed the wrong way coming into last week's games.
  22. QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Jan 16, 2012 -> 12:57 PM) Alex had 4 game winning drives this year, so seeing it Saturday twice wasn't that surprising to those that follow the team. Yes, I'm sure we all were somewhat surprised, but again my first thought in that situation Saturday was how this isn't new to him... Well, one of my good friends is a huge Niner fan, and his text to me immediately following the game was "I can't believe Alex led them down the field for that last TD!" I don't think anyone isn't happy for you guys, but the fact is you guys are still going to be doubted until you win the Super Bowl. You played in a god-awful division, and you play a fairly dull style of play in the year of the arena league offenses...so you've been undecovered, underhyped, and the public isn't in love with you like it has been the Saints/Packers/Patriots. And now you've got people lining up who want to see Tom Brady - Eli Manning II, so most people don't want you to win this week either.
  23. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Jan 16, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) When a guy doesn't have a position, that's not a good thing. And my point isn't so much that the value of Montero for Pineda isn't good. I just think that the Yankees (and 4 or 5 others) have a distinct advantage over other teams because they simply outspend everyone for free agents. For instance, when King Felix comes up for free agency in a few years, the Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, etc. will be the destination. The Mariners will likely have no chance to re-sign him. So, if I'm a GM and I'm dealing with the Yankees, and all they're trying to do is fill a few holes on their all-star team, I'm telling them I need MULTIPLE prospects back. It really doesn't cost them anything because they want to win every season. Letting young players grow up in the majors doesn't interest them. The Yankees will let other teams develop players and grab them when they hit free agency. This is a bit of a double-edged sword, though. Contracts have become so lucrative that if you're handing out several of them a year to FA players, and you get hit with a bad string of injuries or busts, all the sudden you've handicapped your organization for years at a time. In the past, the Yankees and the Red Sox could absorb almost any run of bad luck, but not anymore...now they've got to develop players and make intelligent signings, and not just pick up whomever the flavor of the year is.
  24. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 15, 2012 -> 08:05 PM) This. I'm not fan of Guillen, as we all know. But Peavy might want to shut the f*** up and contribute something at some point before he runs off at the mouth. Hah, come on, Milk...don't you think it's a bit ironic that message board contributors are going to tell a player to stfu and contribute something?
