QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 06:32 AM) I get you now. Fair enough. But I will say to be where we are with Dunn, Rios, Danks and Thornton all being bad to deplorable by itself is enough reason to be optimistic. And no, Scott Merkin did not hack into my account. I just can't help but get encouraged when we beat Pineda and Felix. But back to Mr. negative if we lose to Vargas. I agree that tonight is a huge game for us. We need to get on a roll at home and we need to win the games where the pitching matchup is in our favor. Too many times we win games like we have the last two, only to then lay an egg against a far lesser pitcher the next day. I feel good with Gavin on the mound tonight though. Sweep.

QUOTE (Real @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 06:14 AM) So you're saying if we pass the indians, we're good? 87 wins isn't mediocre to you? Haha ok! Have you been watching this team? I don't think you have.. at least that's the conclusion I'm drawing from your posts I watch the games, yes. I pay $200-some dollars to watch the games, since I live in Las Vegas. No, I do not think we are good if we pass the Indians. But if we continue to play well, and they continue to more accurately resemble the ballclub they actually are, then yes, over the course of 162 games, we will have a better record than the Cleveland Indians. 87 wins, after beginning the season 11-22, would mean we would have been winning at a 59% clip since early May. That would stack up with just about any other playoff contender in baseball, IMO. We've got one of the better starting rotations in baseball. We've also got a few big home run hitters. This is usually a recipe for playoff success and the same recipe certainly worked fairly well in our previous deep run into the postseason. So our final record is really immaterial if it means we make the postseason.

QUOTE (Real @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 06:09 AM) Cleveland started struggling over the last 14 games L, L, L, W, L, L, W, W, L, L, L, L, L, W = 4-10 We're 8-6, in those last 14 games which is 2 games above .500. 8-6, is a .571 Win%, coupled with what our record was at the start of those 14 games (22-27), would put us at 87-75 at the end of the year 87 wins = mediocre qwerty, gmafb child. Ok, so now you are going to argue that picking up 4 games in a 14 game stretch is not significant? Again, if such a "mediocre" scenario were to repeat itself until the end of the season, we would be roughly 22 games ahead of the Indians by October.
-
QUOTE (Real @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 11:41 PM) we've been mediocre going by the W/L record over that time, it's just that Cleveland has been horrible We're 19-11 over that time. That's a .633 winning percentage. If we were to continue on such a "mediocre" pace for the remainder of the season we would win 93 games.

Yeah, I am pretty sure they will actually garnish your wages at some point if you default. It is also a question on pretty much any financial form or job application you fill out..."Have you ever defaulted on a student loan or a government loan"? If you are facing the question of whether to use extra discretionary income towards your mortgage or your student loans, it is actually smarter to use it on the student loans, even if they are at a lower interest rate than your mortgage, due to the fact that if you were to go bankrupt, the student loans will remain while the mortgage will go away.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 07:48 PM) Man, twisting things is easy. And if the play of your team doesn't have an effect on you, then you aren't much of a fan. Who here doesn't have a better mindset when the Sox win? Who doesn't get a little down for the night when they blow a big game? I'm sure Peavy gets upset. But then he probably just ambles over to his computer and notices that he made a quarter of a million dollars last week by just sitting around in a cast. We don't have that luxury. We're fans of the team. He's a guy being paid either way. I understand your frustration. But what, within his power, would you have him do?

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 09:10 AM) How can an owner say he is satisfied with his GM/Manager when his $125-million team is under .500? Big picture...

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 09:27 AM) My manager and I have talked extensively about working fulltime after I graduate, and it is a high interest on both sides for me to return to the company after interning for 2 summers under him. He told me this morning that he reached out to HR to see what is the process in terms of getting me an offer but wanted to know that I was still on the same page. I have been telling him the whole time that this company is who I want to work for, especially for him, but at the same time I have a competitive number in my head in terms of compensation. He said to not worry that much, the company tends to pay well, but he believes there should be a window for negotiation but he needs to talk to HR about the process since they tend to have more say in college hires. Any advice for my part? Both sides are extremely happy with each other but at the same time I dont know what the offer is yet and I want to be prepared if it's too low, etc. I think it's good that you have been honest with him in regards to how you feel about working there. However, make sure they realize you also understand you have options and a market value. Regardless of how dreadful the economy is and the job market is, there is still quite a high demand for bright, young college graduates. Don't make any oral agreements to do anything. But it is fine to express continued interest in a permanent opportunity there. There is nothing you can do until they make you an offer. When they present you with that, acknowledge that you understand the offer, but would like to take some time to think on it. Then you can commence negotiations once you determine what the minimum package is that you would accept, what your market value is, what a competitive wage is in the industry and in the region, etc. But it sounds like right now you are handling things very well.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 09:09 AM) Well yeah, I think we all know that about him. But how many seasons has he had, where he has been bad Rios (like his current numbers) for the full year? I am 95% sure he goes on a tear, and probably soon. I'm not saying that makes everything OK, by the way. Just saying that gives me some optimism for the remainder of the season. Yeah, I don't think anyone can count on anything out of Rios. I know there is a lot of talent in there, but I just don't know when or if it will come out. Now Dunn, on the other hand, I am in full agreement with Wite about. You just don't do what he's done for that long of time, in three different organizations, and then fall off a ledge like this. He will be back.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 08:54 AM) Sounds like another case where the hardware is just ahead of the network. I guess that's the way AT&T wants the world to be. No, I think it's actually the other way around...they can't manufacture solid state drives cheaply enough for these devices to be at the price points they desire, so they are shifting the storage onto the network to make up for the lack of inexpensive hardware.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 07:34 AM) Can you explain to me how this will thrive in smaller towns with lousy 3g/4g and people like me who take the train underground to work? I don't know...I don't really have an opinion on this or the answers to it...just making an observation. I am not technical genius, but it seems like the solid state drives they are using are too expensive to manufacture above 100 gigs or so, so they are shifting storage online rather than in the devices.

So it appears as though Apple is diving full force into this "cloud" concept as well with their announcement of iCloud yesterday. Looks like we are going to continue to see faster, smaller, more capable devices without being cramped up with hard drive storage. Not that we didn't see this coming with the iPads, but this seems to confirm the trend of accessing media via the internet rather than storing it on your device.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 07:54 AM) He won't be anything like Bautista, not even half of him. I'd put money on that. Even if he were half of Bautista he'd be a heck of a player...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 07:09 AM) If Adam Dunn and Alex Rios continue hitting like this, yes. If They begin resembling Adam Dunn and Alex Rios, then no. I'll take our team against them regardless, but your point is well-received. We should have won all three of those games in my mind.

Everyone can continue to spin this to suit their own purposes. All I know is that this team is better than it has performed, and that will be proven as more chances present themselves. And this is exactly what many of us argued. Not to overreact. No overcorrections. Patience. Did you guys really think the Tigers are that much better than us? I understand they are 5-1 against us...but they don't particularly frighten me with Don Kelly/Adam Dirks/Danny Worth, etc....

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 09:45 PM) The minute this team can consistantly beat teams in our division ( outside of the Indians ) thats the minute we can start to take this seriously. First step get to .500, next step start to beat the teams in your division. If that happens then we have a shot. If we keep dropping to teams in our division there is no way we can be in this thing for the long haul. We've played 17 division games. Not much has been proven yet.

Gee, it's not like anyone has been saying the Indians were going to have a stretch like this...

Way to go Danksy! Just in time for me to pick you up in my keeper league after some schlep dropped you last night

Anyone see Mike Morse's line recently? And tonight, another home run and a 2 run double, all off Lincecum in his first two PA's.

QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 04:13 PM) He will come back in 15 days or a month or whatever and people will get all excited about it again and claim that he is still Cy Young. He will pitch a good game and the talk will be how great he is for the team. Then he will get hurt after a few starts and people will be pissed and say they are done with him, until he returns again of course. Its an endless cycle. Would you rather pay him all the money and get zero starts from him? I don't care whether people get frustrated or not, but I just don't see the point in hating the guy for trying to earn his paycheck.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) I didn't say anything even close to that. Perhaps you are the one who isn't reading everything. You and iamshack both said that you don't get angry that he tried to pitch through an injury (something I never even said). Northside said that it bothered him, and I said that you and iamshack would disagree with that because that's what you said a few posts before. I have mentioned about 3 times now that he should have spoken up. I wish he had. I also agree with ss2k that I'll bet he's pitched through these things before, successfully, and no one has been the wiser. I don't really feel the need to get angry about Jake Peavy. I am sorry if that makes me some sort of idiot. I can promise you if you're frustrated, he's 10 x's as frustrated and just wants to perform and earn his paycheck. Notice I was not in here praising him as some sort of manbeast warriorstud.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 02:41 PM) You seem like a huge JFP supporter. Him pitching through pain is being selfish. He couldn't throw the baseball anymore. But he wants to be a superhero and keep pitching even though he's hurting the team by doing so. His agenda of being a tough guy and battling was put in front of the team's goals. That's how. There's some things you can battle through and some things you can't. When your injury prevents you from throwing the ball correctly, it's your job to stop battling through it and do something for the good of the team, not try to be the man and act like you can do anything you put your mind to, because he couldn't. A huge JFP supporter? Do you even read this forum? Seriously, he was trying to get through the inning. . You go ahead and fault him for that. I choose not to.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 02:45 PM) I was sure there was going to be a post in this exact vein But seriously, what does it take? Does Peavy have to hurt his elbow doing the Nazi salute at a white supremacy rally? What does it take to what? Seriously, what would you have us do to him?
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 02:35 PM) What the f***, man. This guy has been on the Sox for about two full seasons at this point. It seems like he's pitched about 10 games for us. Why does anyone defend him anymore? What will it take to piss people off? I just don't understand what you would have us do to him? He signed a contract when he was perfectly healthy to play for the Padres. We tried to trade for him. He rejected the trade. We tried again. He saw the music and said ok. He was injured at the time and he has done nothing but work hard to try and get back and pitch for this ballclub. I know it has reached a point where he needs to stop at the first sign of pain and alert someone, but this is just like other athletes who have been around awhile. Rarely are you ever 100% anymore. He's just trying to contribute to the team's success. I'm not sure when that stopped being admirable and became grounds for some sort of mocking and booing.
