GAME THREAD: OAK @ CWS, 6/10, 7:10pm
iamshack replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in 2011 Season in Review
He had Willingham 0-2 and AJ decided to get cute. Sergio is fine. He's getting squeezed and then it just snowballed. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 08:58 PM) Oh man, that's really bad luck. You better hope Sergio blows this for your sake. I just wish AJ would have gone right at Willingham.

QUOTE (Bighurt52235 @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 09:48 PM) HOLD, Sergio! About to be a wonderful baseball day. Sox win, DET, CLE, MIN losses. Yeah, let's get them 1-2-3 so you can enjoy your dinner!

I played a $40 parlay on the Sox and the Rangers. $40 to win $147. I don't feel confident about this Sox game at all though.

QUOTE (Bighurt52235 @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 06:35 PM) $200 on Sox -1.5 has been placed. Winning bet pays $280. Go us! In honor of you, Bighurt52235, I am going to walk down the street and place the same bet! Best of luck to us!

I feel like our offense is getting on track and is going to put up some runs tonight. The A's have lost 10 straight and I don't expect them to come out of it against a guy like Jackson unless Edwin simply can't get the ball over the plate. He's not been particularly sharp the last two outings so I sort of expect him to be tonight. I'd be tempted to take the Sox minus the runs and hope for the bigger score.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 11:06 AM) That video is so faked. You can tell she is trying not to laugh the whole time by watching the corners of her mouth. Ok Tim Roth... I do agree though. A person would never send that out if they really made that in a serious way...unless it was Steve... As for the intelligence debate...it seems fairly obvious which animal is more trainable and capable, as one has been domesticated to do all sorts of jobs and tasks for humans while another is employed basically as a rat/mouse repellent...

I'd have to say I've rarely seen someone as broken up about a cat dying than their dog.... I don't dislike cats per se, but it just seems as though you can incorporate a dog into your life far more.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 04:37 PM) Oh my...I really hope that was not real.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) These softball questions the reporters ask Ozzie are a joke. Someone has to be a MAN, step up, and call him out on this ridiculous decision to march JP out there everyday at the top of the order and call it what it is and point out how many baseball games this worthless joke of a left fielder has cost us. "There's nothing we can do about it?" Yes there is. DFA him. To me this is almost worse than the Kotsay situation of 2010, which I didn't think I'd see again. Both Ozzie and Kenny need to be fired if they cannot see how glaring of a problem this is. I'm honestly not sure that our media knows any better...they aren't exactly the most baseball-savvy bunch.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 10:30 AM) This is sorta random...But what the hell has happened to Nick Markakis? This dude had 5-tool (at the very least 4-tool) talent oozing from the seams. He's gone downhill ever since he signed that extension back in '09. He probably met a woman...

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 07:20 PM) Did ab ripper, barely sweat. f*** I hate this s***. 4 more days until I can get back at it. Back in the saddle yet? One thing I will say about P90X...the basic structure you build definitely stays in place, even if the bulk does disappear. After taking about 3 months off, I am pretty happy with how things have come back after only 10 days or so back in the saddle here...

If Juan Pierre is signed tmrw to an extension, what would you do?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 09:52 PM) Every small defenseless animal on earth would be in imminent danger. Coward -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 09:41 PM) So back to the game/team: Crain has got to step it up. Santos is going to hit the wall again sooner rather than later if he keeps having to be the only reliable righty in the pen. Crain's fallen in love with his slider again, even though he had more success earlier in the year getting hitters to chase the high fastball. I am having a hard time blaming Crain...he's been just as overused, hasn't he? I would have just taken my chances with Thornton there and let him pitch to Olivo...I seem to remember Olivo being an excellent hanging breaking ball hitter...and Crain tends to hang one or two...

I don't think you can include a country where the player has to risk his life to leave by illegally defecting in your "Latin American scouting budget."

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 04:59 PM) Sure, but then the issue is "cultural differences," not access to technology and video games or having a high standard of living where there's food on the table every day (also, not true for millions of Americans). You're missing the point entirely. Read the rest of the thread.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) But you can't explain America's slipping educational performance by standard of living or technology-induced laziness, because the countries that out-perform us have the same stuff and are generally ranked higher overall. Oh right, so there aren't any cultural differences?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 04:13 PM) Pretty sure the SOL in many countries that beat US in education is on par or better than the US average. I wasn't arguing a direct correlation between global SOL and education.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) They were 16 1/2 back a week or so ago, now they're 11 1/2 back. Dick Cramer just said "and the race for the division is on!" Damn do I hate that guy...

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 01:01 PM) I'm not sure, as to tex's part. Throwing them out certainly would probably improve the rest in the classroom, but it also creates a huge barrier for that student. I'm not sure whether it is considered throwing money at them. I imagine those drop outs become a high percentage of those we consider burdens to the state. There have been success stories with alternative schools created by community peer groups for dropouts and disruptive students that have been controversial in theory, but beneficial in practice. And I'm not saying other distractions don't play a part in it, but I do consider focusing on those useless. Unless we are going to ban video games and cell phones, I don't see how that should be the focal point. This study shows that it aims to insert teachers into the culture of the neighborhood too. I'm mindful of what Tex said about how much we expect out of teachers, but if there are problems at home focusing a group of teachers to disrupt those patterns is an interesting idea. So if I am interpreting this correctly, you are saying these students need more attention than they are currently receiving, and that requires more funding, but you are not sure as to what kind of program you would recommend?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 08:10 AM) And that's the frustrating part. He tweaked it on the blown double play in the 4th inning, and then after that, he said he couldn't throw the ball where he wanted to. After the Cabrera at bat, that's when he should have pulled himself (and kept us in the game). If he would have done that, I don't think anyone on here would have faulted him for his decision making. BS. If he would have pulled himself without appearing to be ineffective first we would have been talking about how he is soft.

Well, a very big part of it is that the rest of the world has raised the bar. We are worse relative to the world because the world has vastly improved while we have remained relatively stagnant due to the law of diminished returns. But we need to focus on how to stay ahead of the curve, instead of being left in the dust.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:18 AM) I can't remember how relative property taxes are factored into it honestly. It wasn't an issue on Michigan City's end (we are fairly low property tax-wise) during the election, so I never thought to research it honestly. The rich schools hate it. Absolutely hate it. I'm waiting to see if it makes a difference in performance or not. Understandably. There is a reason many of those people bought homes in those wealthier areas.
