QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 10:46 AM) I think the term "Jake f***ing Peavy" should be said more tongue-in-cheek than as a compliment to him. It should be similar to how Red Sox fans say "Bucky f***ing Dent". I think it pretty much is at this point...

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 10:32 AM) I'd hardly call them shunned, but these are very weak correlations. So what would you call them? And are they really that weak? Did you read the study?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 07:52 AM) Fine, forget about the Cubs portion of that last post. Let's address the other part. Again, at what point does one realize he's incapable of pitching through pain? You're not helping anybody by getting hurt every couple weeks. When you feel something, anything, let Herm, the medical staff or whatever know. He doesn't deserve extra credit for trying to be tough. I agree wholeheartedly. What I took exception to is the bulls*** about him putting himself before the team. That's horses***.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 07:35 AM) First of all, what's wrong with 40's? They're one of the great creations by mankind. Secondly, how come it was OK for us to laugh at Wood and Prior ad nauseum when they were getting hurt over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over gain, yet we have a guy that continues to get hurt over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again but it's alright because at least he's going out there and trying to pitch through pain when it's been decidedly proven that he's incapable of pitching through pain? Makes no sense and is pretty hypocritical. I never laughed at Mark Prior or Kerry Wood for trying to pitch through injury. In fact, I hope for good things for both of them. If there was anything I ever laughed at regarding that situation, it was the Cubs' constant refusal to admit to the injuries or the prognosis. I'm not sure why some general feeling you got from Soxtalk 5 years ago somehow equates to my opinion on this?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 08:19 AM) So at what point does he realize that his body is not working in conjunction with his Conan the Mighty Barbarian act? Do we need 5 more DL trips between now and when his contract is mercifully up for him to understand this? You have all the answers, J4L. It's really easy for you to bash everyone while you sit on your couch and drink 40 ouncers. Try to put yourself in his position...the guy was probably the best young pitcher in the NL for 3-4 years, and now he can hardly get out of bed every day without hurting himself. He's got Kenny who took a huge risk in acquiring him, as well as a lot of pressure from a fanbase in a major market, as well as his own expectations of himself. Again, I'm not saying he shouldn't do what Wite said...but I highly doubt he intended on giving up 6 freaking runs that inning and I highly doubt his intention was to hurt the team. I don't think anyone is happy with this situation, but I'm not going to take potshots at him for caring enough to make a f***ing effort. Meanwhile, you know everything, so by all means, continue on.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 07:15 AM) You know why I've been skeptical about the "Links" of these things to cell phones? Although there has been cell phone expansion over the past few years, it's not as if there wasn't significant cell capacity a decade ago when there wasn't colony collapse disorder around. Furthermore, you'd expect geographic effects if there was a direct cell phone link...areas like around San Francisco should have huge problems while the Central Valley should be nearly spared, and I've never seen publications suggesting a geographic effect of cities on those. Same thing for the reports about brain damage. People have been using cellular phone systems for 30 years...and honestly I'd bet that the older versions were much stronger microwave emitters than the recent versions, yet we haven't seen a huge spike in brain cancer over the last decade as far as I know. There ought to be a correlation here with something...if cell phone use is causing damage, then you ought to see correlations between cell phone use and the effects of that damage, either in time or in space or based on usage. If someone came out and alleged a correlation between cell phone use and autism rates, which have skyrocketed over the past 30 years, that would intrigue me a lot more, for example. I don't suggest that there is definitive proof for either issue, but it's a bit crazy to me that these topics are basically shunned in the US because the cell phone industry is afraid of the negative publicity. One would think we'd have a right to know a little bit more about the potential links here...

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 10:48 PM) Slightest pain? Seriously? Did you even read the article? Unbelievable. I assume you didn't, so I'll quote him: "(After that) I couldn't throw one ball where it was supposed be thrown," Peavy said. I prefer the type of athlete that puts the team before himself. He said he couldn't f***ing throw a pitch anywhere he wanted. Get the f*** out of the game. I'll take a wild guess which side of the Cutler equation you were on. What do you mean the guy that puts the team before himself? What do you suppose he was trying to do? How was trying to pitch through this putting himself before the team? The guy is a competitve sob and he's certainly more frustrated and baffled by this run of injuries as we are. He's just trying to do what he loves to do and the only thing he knows how to do. He's not pitching for a contract. He could easily be Mike Hampton and just go down with every injury because his money is all guaranteed. But he tries to battle through it because he doesn't know what else to do. I'm not saying he did the smartest thing he possibly could have, but to say he is putting himself before the team is the biggest bunch of bs I've heard lately. And I am not some huge JFP supporter, but it's hard to fault the guy for trying to pitch through this when he could just as easily say "this team is under .500, they have 5 other starters, my paycheck is coming every other week no matter what..."

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 07:00 AM) Anyone else read the study tying this to cell phones? I didn't read the study, but I've heard about the connection, no pun intended. It's amazing to me that this isn't a bigger story, given that bees are such a crucial part of our ecosystem. There is also a lot of buzz (jeesh, all these unintended puns) in Europe about the effects cell phones may have on our brains, however that seems to be getting swept under the carpet in the US as well.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 09:43 PM) Spolestra is definitely winning the battle of plays coming out of timeouts. Mavs have been a disaster in those situations. The Heat are just very composed. It has to be tough to win games on the road when the refs are so clearly f***ing you over.

NBA officiating is such a joke...how can you even believe that this s*** isn't totally fixed to go as many games as possible?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 12:23 PM) Link Yeah, he's been horrendous lately...and they need him if they're going to go anywhere. Down 2-0 again to Texas and CJ Wilson.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 11:26 PM) Shack my gosh I can't believe I read this. So take Juan who actually is doing OK and just demote him and promote Rios, who can't hit a Little Leaguer to leadoff. For the life of me I can't understand those who actually want Rios on this team much less hitting leadoff. We have to find a way to dump Rios on somebody. Greg, I'm just looking at the big picture. Juan will be gone after this season. Rios will be here for three more. And we are on the hook for $45 million or something. Now which player would you want to get on track more? That being said, as Hawk mentioned the other night...this is no time for hurt feelings.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) Seems like there could be storms all night. I wouldn't mind getting an inning in the books and then a 2 hour rain delay. Verlander may be a bit tired tonight anyways...I think he threw 132 pitches last start....although his 132nd pitch was clocked at 100 mph.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) But Juan's actually showing improvement while Rios is just going through the motions and has been dreadful with RISP. Rios, especially on the road, has been killing this team. Yeah, I am one of Juan's bigger supporters....but he is still terrible defensively, and just sort of average offensively. I wonder what would happen if we put Rios in the leadoff spot and just said "Concentrate on getting on base. Don't worry about driving in runs or hitting home runs. Just get on base and steal bases when you can." I think he would do better than Juan in such a role, and we would maintain his defense in center.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 02:21 PM) I saw you list this above, and Pierre is clearly outplaying Rios right now. I know I'm the king of hyperbole, but Rios is doing nothing to help the Sox win games. Also, if Ozzie has to choose between Rios and Pierre, we know who he's going to select. I'd much rather see Lillibridge coming up instead of Rios any day of the week. Yeah, but given how bad they both are (Pierre and Rios), I think we stick with Rios because we have a ton more invested in him than Rios. Yes, we could sit him here and there, because I agree with Hawk about playing the hot hand and not worrying about feelings, but we're not talking Barry Bonds playing for him here, we're talking about Juan Pierre.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 01:58 PM) If you listen closely to Hawk and Stone, they're preparing the fans for Rios getting benched and Lillibridge being named a starter. Quite a few times yesterday, they were questioning Rios' effort to play the game the right way. Also, they kept talking about how when you're in a hole like the Sox are, you can't worry about hurting feelings and you play the guys who are playing your best. I really loved hearing Hawk say that, because it is exactly correct. I just wonder if Rios is the guy that needs to be replaced right now. I am still not convinced. As for Hawk and Stone, do you notice how rude Hawk has been to Stone recently? I can recall 3 times now where Hawk has made a statement, such as last evening: "Victor Martinez is probably the best protection Miguel Cabrera has had since he's been in a Tiger uniform, and possibly, since he's been in the Major Leagues." Stone sought to add to Hawk's point by saying "And he's a switch hitter as well." At which point Hawk immediately interrupts him and says "Well THAT'S WHY I SAID HE's THE BEST PROTECTION! Because HE IS a switch hitter." Then Stone just goes silent for about 30 seconds. This has occurred a few other times as well recently, in very similar scenarios, where Hawk makes a bold statement, Stone tries to add to the statement by saying something that is actually factual and important, only to have Hawk then interrupt him and claim the point Stone made is exactly why Hawk said what he did in the first place, which couldn't be further from the truth. Seems like something is going on between them.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 01:48 PM) Does anyone think that Rios might be the one to lose his job to Lillibridge? It occurred to me last night when I saw Rios hit a lazy weak fly ball to 2nd base when the bases were loaded, and also earlier when he hit what should have been a double play ball to the pitcher with the bases loaded..... He just doesnt look like things are going to get better for him at this point. I think a lot of people have been saying that...let's not think that Rios is unaware of his suckage, either. After he grounded back to the pitcher and came back and beat the hell out of the water cooler or something. They caught it on camera at first and then quickly cut away. I still would rather keep Rios in and play Lilli for Pierre and Dunn and Beckham for the time being.

Maybe I have been watching the Wire too long, and now The Shield, but would the police even do anything now? They probably don't have a known address on these girls.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 09:37 AM) i understand the point and agree with it somewhat. my point is opinions are like assholes, people gonna talk, etc. starting a thread to complain how other people think and act isnt going to stop them from thinking and acting that way I don't think he was hoping we'd all sign a petition...I think he was bored on a Friday...

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 3, 2011 -> 11:20 AM) Hi. Welcome to a messageboard. No, he has a point...it's not the message boards...it's sports talk radio, tv, internet, etc. I remember after the Bulls won game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. You think everyone would have learned something from that.
