QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 10:58 PM) Didn't KW say something about how he wanted to deal with PK first and then A.J.? If that's the case, shouldn't the A.J. signing mean that the PK ship has kind of sailed? That was just speculation from the media or from sources. They also might have been holding AJ at bay a bit and then he forced their hand a bit with the Blue Jays nonsense.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 10:21 PM) The more and more I think about this, the more it's becoming a no brainer. Derrick Lee is the better investment overall, no question. Does anyone know what Lee's preferences are for this year? In terms of where he'd like to play?
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 10:39 PM) I mean, no matter if you wanted us to bring him back or let him move on, it's hard to argue $4 million a year. With AJ's reputation throughout the league, and his recent performance with a bat in his hands, he probably wasn't going to eclipse this by much. This is a good deal for both parties.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 09:35 PM) AJ is top 3 or 4 in Sox jerseys seen at USCF at most games. This is a true PR move as well as a vet re-signing. Don't you know that's just because he's polish?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 09:34 PM) If some other team wants him, you don't say no. He probably has what, 1 more option left? No other team is going to give up anything of value for him at this point. Not sure about the option, but you just created the perfect situation for keeping him around by signing AJ to that contract.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 09:31 PM) His value could actually still go down from here. That decrease in value is probably not worth the risk of not allowing him to try and realize his potential. At this point, it's probably best to just hope he pans out.

I watched White Men Can't Jump the other night. What Kenny is doing reminds me of when Wesley Snipes is pulling money out of his hat, his socks, his crotch, and says "Oh my, it's coming from everywhere..."

A.J. not close to signing with Blue Jays

QUOTE (GREEDY @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) Cowley grasping for straws again.... douchebag. I don't think so...I think this is Cowley helping AJ out by establishing that there is some kind of interest in his services... -
I'll take Lee at a cheaper cost and lesser committment, and take the draft picks for PK when he signs elsewhere.

A.J. not close to signing with Blue Jays
iamshack replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I call BS. If this is true, AJ is just making this public to establish that he has offers on the table. Him and Cowley are friends, aren't they? I have a really hard time believing AJ jumps on some deal to play in Canada before seeing what else shakes loose out there. My guess is this is just an attempt to establish some market value. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 05:16 PM) I think we are trading a pitcher. Maybe packaging Q with someone from the rotation. Floyd and Quentin to the Cards would be interesting for a possible Rasmus swap... Edit: scratch that, Cards don't have much of a need at SP...

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 06:14 PM) Hadn't seen this posted. Rosenthal The team, in addition to pursuing Konerko, Dunn and catcher A.J. Pierzynski in free agency, also is in engaging in advanced trade discussions, according to sources. One candidate to move: Right fielder Carlos Quentin, who stands to earn about $5 million in arbitration but is not eligible for free agency until after the 2012 season. The Phillies and Cardinals both have been linked to Quentin in published reports. The White Sox likely are looking for bullpen help — and payroll flexibility. And here we go...

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:59 PM) I hate that Soxtalk is making me dislike when the word "Jim" is followed by "Thome". There is no "Jim" present in his post

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 05:55 PM) Well, well, well...Pass out for a few hours from some early morning drinking and suddenly we've signed one of the elite power threats in baseball. Nothing to complain about here. Splendid move. A normal day in the life of a hardcore White Sox fan...

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:48 PM) Am I really the only one who doesn't care for this move? Great, we're building the team to be station to station, hit home runs or get shut out. Haven't we gone through this all before? It's not my favorite signing of all time...I have an irrational hatred for Adam Dunn. But given what our options were, I suppose I understand the move...I just fear what the next shoe to drop will be...

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:41 PM) He could be gone, but I think he only makes $5 million in 2011. I know...but 5 million is 5 million... I'll feel like the Miami Heat if we sign Konerko too...

I hope I'm wrong, but my guess is this means bye-bye Gavin....

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 08:14 AM) June 2nd. Thanks! I'm counting the minutes!

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 07:10 AM) Yeah my pregnant wife's jaw dropped when we learned that while watching the movie. She exclusively drank from those at work. Congrats, Sqwert! When is she due?

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 07:48 AM) Did you know that "Egad a base life defiles a bad age" spelled backwards is "Egad a base life defiles a bad age"? Your move, Hoss. . . Unfortunately I don't even know what that means spelled forwards....
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 11:21 PM) BTW, in that movie Tapped they mentioned that the plastic used in those bottles is the worst (i.e., most dangerous). Ugh...looks like I'll be buying the filter and bringing my own water then...time to go water bottle shopping!

Boras company tied to lending money to prospects

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 10:34 PM) Well, I didn't say slavery. And while it may or may not be against MLB rules, it's probably not any more illegal than payday loans with 400% APR. That's the example I was going to use as well. It's just taking advantage of people in bad positions to exert control over them for your own benefit. Slimy, but unfortunately legal. -
Boras company tied to lending money to prospects

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 10:19 PM) Boras has never been dishonest? Huh? Anyway, the point is he is exploiting their current financial situation (poverty) for his own advantage. And we don't really know how hard he goes after people who don't (or can't) pay him back. But really, I think the point is, how is this any different than all kinds of other creditors that loan money to people using ridiculous terms to exploit their present unenviable position? This particular kid was allowed to sign with other representation, was he not? So it isn't like Boras is using the debt to force him to use Boras's company as representation. So I fail to really see the comparisons to slavery and prostitution here. Is it slimy, of course. But slavery? That seems a bit dramatic. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 09:08 PM) Same basic mixture. Somewhere around 1/2 the companies that drive those big things up to your building just are bringing filtered tap water. The remainder are bringing some variety of bottled water, likely actually bottled at a spring source, but not tested or necessarily meeting drinking water standards. If anyone ever wants to panic about bottled water, drive 395 up Owens Valley, CA. Right on the side of Owens dry lake bed, which is for all practical purposes an environmental disaster area, you'll hit the "Crystal Geyser" bottling plant. Yeah, I don't drink bottled water in the individual bottles but I do drink the water at work from those 5-gallon bottles. There is no real availability of water otherwise, except for tap water in the bathroom, which scares me a bit, frankly. Maybe I need to buy a large water bottle and a brita filter and just bring it to work with me.
