QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) f*** That's just a ploy to get us to up our bid.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) At least they looked good doing it. Those old school unis are awesome. They are some of my favorites amongst all of the retro unis, right up there with the old Denver Nuggets uniforms and the old Houston Astros uniforms from the 80's.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 09:57 AM) Lotta the other GM's are supposedly pissed about this. Sandy Alderson said something on the record along the lines of "I thought Washington was trying to get rid of the deficit". That said...I said this earlier in the thread. When the 2003 Tigers wanted to start grabbing FA's to rebuild, they had to massively overpay because no one wanted to play there if they didn't. So, guys like IRoid and Ordonez got contracts that were vastly above what they would have gotten otherwise. Washington's in the same boat here. They've got a lot of talent on the way up, but no credibility with FA's, so if they want to add a veteran to their team, they have to overwhelm them. I think that is a very valid point, although I think this is also a case of them misjudging the market. Supposedly Adrian Beltre has just been flat-out ignoring Oakland's offers, and I am sure PK is doing the same with Baltimore's offer. However, Boras did not even give other teams the chance to match Washington's offer because it so far blew away anything else out there. My guess is something in the range of $6/100 that Carlos Lee got may have sufficed.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 10:16 AM) 8 yrs., $175 mil I think a lot of teams are really hesitant to go this far out on Crawford because a lot of his value is based on his speed. My guess is something more like 6/$125

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) Chuck Garfien: White Sox meeting with Paul Konerko's agent Craig Landis at 11am eastern. Diamondbacks reportedly making big push. I wonder what kind of hit PK would take to his legacy here if he signed with the Diamondbacks for a similar or lesser offer than what we were offering him...

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 02:16 PM) So Cowley's Blue Jays report was wrong. Shocking. He's such an idiot. I still think it was Cowley doing a favor for AJ by just throwing out something to try and force our hand a bit...

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:25 AM) I think Balta mentioned this before. That model would work for a couple of years and then when the players aren't as good as they were when they signed the deals due to regression, you're going to be stuck with an old team who is overpaid and will underperform. That's where you'll get into trouble. And there is no better example than with the Yankees, of all teams. They were operating in the red for several years in the early and mid 2000's because of bad contract after bad contract. If it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.

QUOTE (T R U @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 02:45 AM) Highest QB rating in the league since week 5 going into Sunday nights game.. Ide say better than decent, but overrated maybe a little QB rating very much favors a quarterback on a good team though. It penalizes so much for interceptions, which tend to happen a lot more often when you're behind in games, which the Ravens are not very often.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:41 PM) Flacco has a decent stat line though and usually he's no worse than above average (except for one awful game he had this year). But he still seems like one level above "pedestrian" to me. I think the early success he experienced led many to believe he would develop into an elite qb. However, it seems to me as though he is probably more in the "above-average" tier than anything. The other thing is that many quarterbacks are products of the systems they are in. I wonder if he would develop more if he was put into a more aggressive offense that didn't have the luxury of relying on the defense and running game as much...

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:36 PM) Watching the end of this Steelers-Ravens game... Flacco has a clean pocket, a guy open on 4th down, and just bounces it off the ground. Flacco is a decent QB but I think he's really overrated. I dunno if he expected Dixon to come inside instead of outside or what, but yeah, just a weak throw. The Ravens' offense has not lived up to anywhere near the hype this year, considering they added Boldin and Housh...

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:07 PM) Cutler fumbled the ball after Suh hit him? i dont remember that It came out well after he was down. It was never ruled a fumble on the play.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:01 PM) The NBC score scroll at the bottom of the screen mentioned the Bears being "helped" by a controversial call again. It was a close call on a bad hit and it didn't change the outcome of any play or drive. It gave the Bears an extra 7 yards. Ridiculous. And yet, I didn't see them making any comments when the Cowboys benefitted from numerous bad calls against the Lions two weeks ago, namely one play where they called a horse collar on the Lions for tackling Marion Barber by his hair, which is perfectly legal. Seems like the media simply does not want to give much credit to the Bears.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 08:14 PM) Blue Jays are trading Marcum to the Brewers. I think that deal should be a good comparison for what we can expect to receive for Floyd. Wow...this is a good find for Milwaukee...

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:08 PM) Do the Bears want TB or ATL to win this game? If ATL wins it could essentially eliminate TB from the playoffs (which is good for the Bears). If TB wins then the Bears are tied atop the NFC at 9-3. Based on the difficulty of the Bears remaining games, I think I want ATL to pull this one out. It's really all up in the air, to be honest. This was a huge game for the Bucs, but it doesn't necessarily knock them out of anything. The Bucs have a pretty soft schedule remaining with games at Washington, then at home against Detroit and Seattle. Considering Washington is a mess, and Detroit hasn't won a road game in 2 years, and Seattle does not win games on the East Coast, especially in that early time slot, chances are the Bucs can meet the Saints on Jan 2nd for a chance to reach 11 wins. The scary thing is that the Bears have tough games remaining against the Pats and Jets, a much improved Minnesota Vikings team, and of course the Packers in Green Bay. Should the Bears finish with 10 wins and in second place in the NFC North, they could get bumped out of the playoffs by the Bucs because they could potentially lose the tiebreaker against common opponents. Should the Bucs win 2 of 3 or all three games versus Washington/Seattle/Detroit, and finish tied with the Bears at 10-6, the Bucs would win the tiebreaker against us because we lost to Seattle and Washington. So it's probably to the Bears' advantage that Atlanta won today, because they are going to make the playoffs regardless. Still kind of far out to make many predictions at this point though...there are still a bunch of huge matchups that will determine playoff eligibility and seedings, so we really won't know a whole lot other than that the 3rd seed is going to get screwed by being forced to play a team like the Packers/Giants/Bears/Bucs, while the 5th seed will get to play the NFC West winner.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 11:11 PM) Eh, we have two contracts that load up, and next year doesn't add up that much. This is the reasoning that everyone uses at first... Just don't make it a habit...
-
I don't like the fact that we are beginning to backload contracts, even though it isn't necessarily a lot of money yet. You begin to do that, and you start getting yourself in trouble. One of the things I think we have done well is to avoid signing contracts that inevitably become hard to move and to avoid backloading. Next year we are going to be in more of a pinch than this year.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 01:31 PM) Wait how did this become sox send $1.5M to sox send $3.5M, that makes the trade less good. Any replacement is gonna get paid essentially 500K anyway so the net gain is like $1.5M, before the net gain was $3.5M, enough to translate to a real Major league addition. Initially Jon Paul Morosi was told by a source that we were paying $1.5 million to the Braves. However, as time elapsed and more details became available, it was learned that the White Sox were actually paying $3.5 million to the Braves. The thread subtitle was then updated to reflect that.

Sox engaged in "advanced trade discussions"

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) They have so many OF/DH types though. They just non-tendered Cust and Travis Buck. But I don't see Quentin being in their plans either. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 10:49 AM) I really haven't heard anything about teams being interested in Werth, have you guys? The Red Sox have been all over him.

Official 2010-2011 NCAA Football Thread

Oh my goodness! How does a lowly WAC team defeat a team from the mighty Big Ten?!? Surely each and every team in the mighty Big Ten is head and shoulders above the lowly and pathetic WAC! -
This is going to be a case of the Brewers simply waiting too long to trade the big man...

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 02:42 AM) The nice thing is there are several options at first base, some better than others, but still several solid choices to choose from. I would be very hesitant in the long run... which is the ultimate goal for any business/franchise. People are throwing around the idea of a large commitment to konerko, on top of two huge commitments to rios and dunn? The sox have one of the biggest question marks in the game with all things considered in peavy. Peavy is guaranteed 33 million over the next two years to be nothing more than what i already mentioned, a question mark. A smart move has to be made. A smart move, in my opinion, is not retaining a player at 10+ million for 3 years, given our situation. Floyd/ danks will eventually get paid, and get paid well, soon. Let's say quentin just so happens to tear the cover off the ball (one of the leagues bests) this up coming season. Unrealistic? Yes, probably. Beyond belief? No. But the man would be paid, and he would be paid by the white sox. These things have to be considered. There is a ton of money potentially locked up in only a select few. One or two more long term, extremely expensive contracts, over the next two seasons will be enough to cripple this team for many years to come. I see someone coming in on a one year deal, and there very well could/will be an option for a second year. If not, a straight up two year deal can not be written out of the equation for whoever is brought in. I'm not against what happened today, i'm all for it, but what people have to remember is there will always be three sides to every story ever told. The key is to stay out of the deals that you can't unload down the line should you need to. Big contracts, in and of themselves, are not necessarily terrible, and I don't think Dunn's deal will prove to be trouble at all. However, as you alluded to, too many of them and you're going to get burned sooner or later. We've done a very good job of this until the Peavy contract, which we did not offer him, but obviously we assumed by acquiring him. I just hope we don't duplicate this problem by getting too aggressive with PK.
