QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 09:23 PM) I've always heard SF and NYC's ATT networks are notoriously awful. My service seemed to be completely fine. I didn't experience any problems at all, and I was using my phone for everything, as my hotel did not have free wi-fi for my iPad.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 02:20 PM) So true. I was just in SF last weekend for vacation and my iphone 3g literally wouldnt be able to render web pages or download emails fully. It was AWFUL. Here in Chicago I really dont have many problems with ATT much. Anyway I just upgraded my iphone 3gs to an iphone 4 and its amazing how much brighter and clearer the screen is if you place them next to each other. Truly unreal. Are you serious? I was in SF last weekend as well....crap

QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 04:56 PM) Thank you! No big party this year. Just the wife and I at home cooking a rib-eye and having a cold beverage to celebrate. Happy belated, Patrick! hope you enjoyed your day, you old fart

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 08:51 AM) The actual guy that they tried to cite was taken horribly out of context and personally ripped the book in interviews. I remember hearing the criticism when the book was published, so I knew they were being a little loose with their facts, which is why I originally linked to the Intellectual Ventures page instead of Super Freakonomics. Thanks for the explanations, Balta. That was informative.

I think you missed this in your skimming...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 07:46 AM) I have no information on their position on climate change and I can't seem to find any at that page. Can you fill in the blanks? Here is an excerpt from Super Freakonomics which describes the position taken by Intellectual Ventures: Excerpt from Super Freakonomics It's a long excerpt, but I promise you, it is definitely worth reading...

What do you guys think about the thinktank mentioned Super Freakonomics, Intellectual Ventures, and their position on climate change? Intellectual Ventures

Who do you guys like in tonight's game? Everyone seems to be buying into the Texans keeping it close once again....I think the Colts are going to manhandle them...Colts 34-21

This is one of the funnier threads of the offseason so far...

Going with Giants and under 6.5 runs tonight...just a wild guess...but going to stick with the hot team...

Wow, what a day yesterday! Hit two 4-leg parlays for a $2,100 day... 1) Rams - 3 Detroit/Redskins over 44 Bills +7.5 Chargers -3.5 That one paid $650, so I figured I would put a little down on the games last night... 2) Giants +132 Under 9 runs Saints - 2 Under 45.5 $100 to win $1,461 8-0 for the day! The one good thing about living in Vegas I guess (at least yesterday it was, anyways)

QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Oct 28, 2010 -> 04:09 AM) I've heard people complain about subtitles in movies before and I've never understood why it's an issue. Obviously, there are times when subtitles are done badly (flash quickly on and off the screen or are displayed in a way that is difficult to see) - which affects everybody. Do you feel like your attention is divided? iamshack, you should check out the sequel. If you happen to be a Netflix subscriber, "The Girl Who Played With Fire" was just added to the Instant Watch list. Heading to San Francisco for the weekend...rented The Girl Who Played with Fire from iTunes for the flight over...thanks for the heads-up!

QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Oct 28, 2010 -> 09:26 PM) What was the model number on that camera? Sony Cybershot DSC-HX5V

QUOTE (G&T @ Oct 28, 2010 -> 07:45 PM) Talk to people about network quality in your area. This is the most import thing. The phone will be useless without the network. AT&T happened to be solid here so I got an iPhone. But 3G is spotty in rural areas. Any phone you get will amaze you and you won't be able to live without it so don't fret. Have to agree on this one. You can get all the anecdotal evidence from others that you want, but what matters is how the network performs where you will use it. I hear countless stories about AT&T sucking, but in Vegas, it is very, very good. And of course, I think the iPhone is an outstanding device, especially with all the developer support they get, but I'm sure like others have said, any of these new phones you get will probably knock your socks off if you've been rolling with the old school equipment.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 27, 2010 -> 11:20 PM) I've had enough. I want Miranda Cosgrove! I don't care that I'm 10 years older. Lock me up and throw away the key. Is she a prospect in the Rockies system?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 10:13 PM) My company just revoked it. They pay for pretty much any other degree except an MBA now. Still i think they only gave us 6k a year. Its f***ing expensive. I was looking at UIC, Depaul, etc and I just cannot fathom how to pay for it. I cannot get a student loan with a full time job at my income level and I cannot afford it on my income. You can get government loans that will cover most of the expenses though, can't you?

Watched the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last weekend....it was very good, especially considering I had to read the subtitles.

R. Soriano, Fielder, Kemp mentioned in connection w/ Sox
iamshack replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I really don't understand how anyone with knowledge of the White Sox payroll committments could believe we would be major players this offseason. Barring some sequence of huge trades, we'll be signing a few guys off the scrap heap and maybe signing PK. The money just isn't there this offseason. Now that doesn't mean KW doesn't pull off a deal for a player such as Kemp, but it would have to be a high-risk/high-reward type deal for someone like Kemp or BJ Upton or someone who is not quite meeting his capabilities and management is impatient with him. -
I'll bet our defensive line could block better if we inserted them as offensive lineman than this offensive line can.

So I have to say, the new Apple Magic Trackpad is an absolute pleasure to use, and almost essential when using a large monitor. I bought one with my 27-inch iMac and it's just brilliant. Even though the magic mouse is also very nice, I don't think I'll ever use it, because the trackpad is just so much simpler. magic trackpad Secondly, I picked up a sony cybershot point and shoot camera the other day, as I have not had a camera since about my sophmore year in high school. Did a bit of research before buying, and am really happy with it so far. It has a really neat panoramic function and also works really well in low-light.

My picks for the day: 1) Niners -3 2) Browns +13 3) Falcons -3.5 4) Ravens -13 5) St Louis to win outright 6) New England to win outright 7) Tennessee -3 8) Green Bay -2.5

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 05:22 PM) Shack and Greg for sure. I'd even put Heads on that list. Carry on... The thing is, I'm not like that with other sports. I am very critical of the Bears and Bulls. I just happen to absolutely agree with Kenny's philosophy and management style. On the other hand, I'm not just blindly supporting our players or trying to hang-on to fan favorites. I'm very critical of our players, just not our front office. Case in point, I have been advocating a John Danks trade since probably May and that is certainly not a viewpoint shared by most "chronic homers."

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 04:10 PM) I'll be honest, to me, this seems like a very homeristic view of things to excuse KW for a bad trade. This could be what J4Life was talking about, but I don't want to speak for him. I'm sure KW had higher expectations for the trade than simply freeing up Javy's salary. The key to that deal is and always will be Tyler Flowers. This is how every trade for prospects works out, and why it is so difficult to deal with prospects. Some of them pan out, some of them don't. I've been trying to hammer this point through to the "pro-development" guys around here over and over, but not one ever addresses the downsides of trying to develop your own talent with assets that have a huge fail rate. There are so many costs associated with this beyond what anyone here has pointed out. What we have seen with Beckham and Flowers, amongst some others, is nothing compared to trying to keep 6-8 guys in the picture and have any clue what your collective team is going to perform like. Anyways, I digress...I'm not willing to write off Flowers just yet. Let's see where he is 4-5 years from now before we really know what we've got here.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 02:42 PM) A fan will almost always critiicze their own prospects more than others because they hear about them the most and will have the chance to see or read about the flaws. Just because one points out a flaw or doesn't agree that the prospect is a top 50 or whatever, doesn't mean that they feel like the trade was the best option for the team. I'm certainly not one to think the two opinions are mutually exclusive. All I'm saying is that the "extreme" perspective some have mentioned from time to time comes from some that immediately and many times unfairly discount the talents of some of our prospects while they remain in our system, and then once that player is traded, those flaws seem to disappear in the minds of those who criticize the deal. There has to be a certain reasonableness that seems to be missing when it comes to evaluating our organization and those in positions of decision-making authority.
