There is nothing wrong in my mind with going to the ground or getting out of bounds. There is rarely anything to gain by trying to be Walter Payton and dishing out the punishment, especially when you weigh less than 200 pounds. Elite receivers like Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Tory Holt and Isaac Bruce, to name a few, have all been employing this strategy for the last several years, both to prolong their own careers, and to avoid getting held up and stripped in an ill-fated attempt to gain an extra yard. The key is that they continue to catch the ball and finish their routes. If it gets to the point where they are alligator-arming s*** to avoid hits, that is where it gets to be a problem. I haven't seen that from any of our receivers yet though.

You said it. The guy is ridiculous offensively, as well as defensively. Comes up big in the spotlight too. What more does he have to do?

I don't really care which one we sign at this point. Whomever is cheaper and comes with a shorter commitment would get my vote.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 04:41 PM) Anything can happen in the playoffs especially when you have incredible starting pitching. That '05 offense wasn't very good. Wasn't just about the playoffs that year. The team won 99 games, as you well know. This team could win with an offense similar to the one Balta posted a few minutes ago, but it would need to get a lot of help from the bullpen as well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) The Sox were almost that team... Anyways, the key is who, today, has that kind of payroll flexibility to add $20,000,000 a year for the foreseeable future? Well, I think the main question is who can make it work for THIS season. Most teams have begun getting a lot less reckless over the past few seasons regarding the long-term deals they hand out, so my guess is whichever teams can make it work for this season are those with the best opportunity. Many teams might be willing to trade players impacting their books this upcoming season to find a way to make it work though. My guess is the Red Sox, White Sox, Orioles, Angels, Dodgers and Mets would all be interested.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:06 PM) Does Boston have room for $20 million on their payroll? I can't imagine with his salary, Cabrera would command anything like he did a couple of years ago on the trade market. I honestly wonder if he was waived, how many teams would even put claims in on him. I would assume any team that was after him then felt as though they would have to pay him somewhere in the neighborhood of what he got from Detroit.

I don't have anything to say about Kyle Orton. But we have really mindf***ed Jay Cutler in just 11 games. The dude is hardly even recognizable.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) http://www.draysbay.com/2008/8/4/585960/th...about-b-j-upton Hmm.. Okay, that's not as bad as I thought. With arb though, he could be pulling down 9-10 mil a year. I don't get it...if he won't reach arbitration until after 2010, he won't be a free agent until after 2013... And he likely wouldn't reach $9-10 million until 2012 or 2013...

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 05:12 PM) well I will take my medicine Xanax or Xylocaine?

Variation is needed.

Usually, I wouldn't have done that, but Tex needed a little bit of his own medicine there...

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) Deliciously titled "Spooky Space Kook", Knight... QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) Decent show, but Clutch Cargo was by the far weirder ahem...

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 04:56 PM) I can't see why the Sox would give Jones a guaranteed contract right now, and I can't see Boras having him sign a minor league contract, even if that is all he could command at this particular time. Maybe right before spring training when they know how each roster will be set, but not now. I love how you use the argumentitive thing. You were the one who started arguing with me when I mentioned Gagne. I had recently read how he was going to sign a minor league contract and attempt a comeback. Just because you can't see something certainly does not back up the point you're trying to make. You not seeing something is not a valid point of argument. As for Gagne, I give up. I tried to concede the point to you just to put the issue to rest an hour ago and you are still bringing it back up. Honestly, I disagree with you, but I don't want to argue with you about it. It's not fair to the rest of the forum to have to read through this nonsense.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) Would you do Hudson straight up for Upton? I would, in a NY minute. I don't think TB would though.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 04:18 PM) I would think he wouldn't have his client sign what the Sox would want him to sign in November. DA, I know that you want to be argumentative with me, but for a guy that is not even guaranteed a major league contract, these type of players don't usually pass them up. He had to beg just to get a minor league contract last year so he could learn from Jaramillo, and while he showcased some power, his numbers were again incredibly underwhelming, especially considering he was hitting in optimal situations for him to succeed.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) Upton's the kind of guy that I'd really hate to overpay for and then have him go all Delmon Young on us. So talented but seems like he's been struggling forever. Yeah, he has been struggling massively....I think he has a lot more talent than Young though....his grasp of the strike zone makes him incredibly more value...
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) Jones would excite a lot more than Vizquel and Boras is his rep. I don't think Boras really enters into the equation much when it's such a low-value contract.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) Recently. Its a blurb in a Tampa paper. http://www.tampabay.com/sports/baseball/ra...catcher/1053598 I wonder what Cowley thinks. Nice find, DA. That would be awesome...imagine out defensive OF with Upton and Rios out there...
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) Supposedly the Sox have made some inquiries into getting BJ Upton. That would definitely make Teahan a 3B. As in the past, or like, the last few days?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) Why would BJ Ryan have a much higher ceiling? He was released by 2 teams last year. Toronto has to pay him $10 million in 2010. I think you could say, however, any of the guys mentioned have a higher ceiling if everything goes well than a 43 year old light hitting SS. Well, my personal choice was Andruw Jones. At least BJ Ryan hasn't been getting lit up in the American Legion leagues... But I guess you're right, they are both probably horrendous. It just seems like Ryan could make a comeback from his health issues, whereas Gagne won't make a comeback from pure suckland.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) A cheap reclimation project? He might not be able to be reclimated, but he certainly would be a cheap reclimation project who isn't as exciting as the Vizquel signing, which if you think about it, has to be a very dull signing. With a much higher ceiling? I would hope if we sign Gagne, we take Kenny to get his brain examined, and we don't tell a soul, for fear of being laughed at for the remainder of the offseason.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) The Sox have brought plenty of guys who couldn't do much at lower levels to spring training. He does not match the description of this player in the least bit, DA.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) Gagne said he was attempting a comeback and would be willing to sign a minor league deal. So it would be a no risk deal. Unless its Laynce Nix and he wants to play with his brother, maybe in Charlotte. I wasn't saying Gagne wouldn't come back. I'm saying why would you want a guy that can't even pitch in the freaking Independent League effectively?
-
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) Itd be a potential nice pickup which if he returns to form(i still dont know what his condition is) it could make jenks expendable at mid season if the sox dont think theyre gonna sign him up long term. If he doesnt return to form oh well it should be a very small contract so its low risk high reward I think he's able to pitch, but I just don't know that he has anything left in the tank. The Cubs signed him last year and he did nothing for them.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) I think its probably someone like Justin Speier, or Eric Gagne or Paul LoDuca. Gagne is pitching in the Independent League, and posted an ERA in the mid-4's last year. It's definitely not him. I think Saint may be on to something here...BJ Ryan does fit quite well with what Doc said as well as what this team needs...
