2015-2016 NFL Thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 04:13 PM) Jenks, would you argue for any other person that they deserve a 3rd QB spot on a roster? I mean, when you sit back and think about it, it is absurd. He is a limited QB with a specific skill set that only comes in handy at specific times. Oh I agree. However, I do think he got kind of a raw deal. I think he's good enough to be on a roster is my only point (down the bench). He's not atrocious like some people think. He looked pretty decent in his pre-season action. He looked better than his Denver games. Again, i'm not suggesting he's a great or even good QB, he's just not awful like people say he is. He has limitations, he shouldn't be running a franchise as the starting QB, but I think he's 2nd or 3rd string worthy. Do we really think he's measurably worse than Jimmy Clausen? Who was that scrub we had a couple of years ago that went into San Fran and couldn't throw the ball to anyone when Cutler was hurt? I was at that freakin game, and you can't tell me that Tebow would have played any worse. (Jason Campbell maybe?) You could make a list of awful QB's and back-up QB's for the Bears and while i don't think Tebow would have won a lot more games or anything, i don't think he'd be any worse. In sports guys that don't have athletic ability A, B or C still have some extra gear or some random skill that allows them to make positive contributions. It's often unexplainable, but it happens. I think Tebow's one of those guys. He'll make several awful decisions, and then he'll make a great play and you ride the wave. That's what happened in Denver. When the alternative is more average/bad QB play, why not take the guy with that extra whatever?

2015 Recruiting thread
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 03:25 PM) 2 years ago at this time I really thought Groce was the guy after he landed Black and shortly thereafter Snider after doing a solid job with the 2013 class (which hasn't totally panned out but its usually tough to land elite recruits in that first class) and having a good first season at Illinois. With a few exception pretty much everything since has been a disaster and its hard to see him lasting past this year. I think they miss the tourney this year and then he's on the hotseat next year. If they don't land some crazy recruiting class and/or make a decent run at the tourney, he'll be gone....or should be. If Thomas is still around, no way he fires both of his major hires. That'd be his death sentence.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 12:56 PM) There aren't many teams wasting roster spots on a 3rd string QB these days, and like bmags pointed out, having him as a "backup" doesn't really make sense because you have to change your entire offense to cover up for his many weaknesses. More than half do, according to this fantasy site anyway: http://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthchartpos/QB

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 12:32 PM) He's just not an NFL QB. He's been let go by Josh McDaniels, John Fox, Bill Belichick, Rex Ryan, and Chip Kelley. If he could play, one of those men would have kept him. He needed a position switch and just never did it. Mind you, i'm not saying he's GOOD or that he deserves to be a starter. But 3rd string. 3rd string! He's better than half the current 3rd string QB's, i'm confident in that. And no, he didn't win those games by himself, but he made plays. Are we forgetting that awful Bears game? It took some Tebow-Jesus luck, but the dude made throws when it mattered.

Political Correctness is Pretty Silly
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 12:31 PM) Next time I hear someone use the phrase "political correctness" that isn't coming from a white person complaining about how they're not allowed to say something negative about a particular group will be the first. http://www.vulture.com/2014/11/chris-rock-...versation.html#

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 11:28 AM) Are we still doing this with him? Will it ever end? It's not crazy, he is awful. If teams thought he could play, he would be on a team. See I don't think either one of these statements is true. He's not GREAT. He's probably not GOOD. But the dude has a winning record and a playoff win. Not a lot of QB's have that. He makes plays. He doesn't make a ton of mistakes. I get that there's a lower ceiling with him, but so what? He does some good things, how's that not worth a 3rd string slot? I think the biggest problem is the baggage he brings with him. He takes away the spotlight from other players. He'd be a guy that you have to talk about constantly despite never seeing the field. I think that, above all, is why he's not on a roster.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 10:44 AM) I'm not a Tebow fan, in fact I dislike him immensely and think he's a scrub but I found this interesting. I think it's pretty s***ty he doesn't get more of a chance. Given the crap that some teams throw out there, and this guy can't even get a third string role somewhere? Pretty crazy.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 10:36 AM) Its one thing to have someone looking across the field trying to decipher what the other team is doing, but its a different game when you are having someone recording those signals and bringing them back to the coach at halftime. I could have sworn that they were also recording the defensive signals in the walk thrus and practices before the game he has been dead in the water for a while now The fact that it was so wide spread (at least 40 games, if not more) and they got caught and told to stop, but THEN KEPT DOING it, is the killer for me. That and the NFL's clear cover-up that I guess makes a little sense given the steroid scandal, but boy it makes the NFL look bad, Goodell in particular.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) The NFL's own report said that Tom Brady was "probably at least generally aware" of deflating the balls. That's not exactly a strong claim of guilt. There's still not even definitive proof that the balls were intentionally underinflated. edit: I'd also prefer no punishment to over-the-top punishment, so even though Brady/The Patriots really are probably guilty, I'm happier with nothing than with a ridiculous 4 game suspension. Right and then throw his obstructing actions on top of it and it tips the scale pretty easily to me. There's no legitimate reason for him to destroy that phone knowing for months the NFL wanted to look at it to find out exactly what he and the ballboys were talking about.

2015-2016 NFL Thread
I think you can disregard the language that he was using because i'm sure to some extent he wanted to be as soft on Brady as possible while still concluding he violated the rule. You want to punish the face of the league, not call him a big, lying cheater at the same time. I don't see a jury looking at the evidence - the text messages we do have, the names they gave Brady and themselves, testimony from just about every QB and kicker out there that QB's and ballboys are tight and talk about how they like the balls prepared (Jay Feely the other day said it's common you tip the crap out of ballboys to keep the balls how you like them), the incredibly shady move of getting rid of the phone, etc. - and finding any doubt there.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 01:31 PM) I've gained some weight since the kid came - about 15 lbs. Nothing huge. But I've noticed something new that sucks - heartbearn. Like, I can't breathe or function, kill me now heartburn. It happened for the third time last night. I've been using Nexium but doesn't seem to help. Seems to be happening once a month. The last two times were on evenings after I had an evening workout (and didn't eat anything after 6pm) - when I went to bed it just rushed on me with no stopping - Tums do nothing. Last night's came with a bad bout of back spasms. Awesome. Anyone got any tips other than lose the weight?

Supreme Court to Decide Whether Gays Nationwide Can Marry
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 10:11 AM) I mean as Huckabee is saying it, because there isn't a law saying that I can adopt a cat from a shelter, I can't adopt a cat from a shelter. I think that is 100% backwards. Playing devils advocate, that's not really the same. The clerk has delegated duties by law to fulfill in her role as clerk of the county. It's the lack of instruction, basically, from the law that he's pointing towards. You as a person aren't filling a position created by law to adopt cats with various instructions on what you're supposed to do in that position.

QUOTE (The Gooch @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 01:05 PM) How did those other text messages get released to the public? With the way things get out about celebrities' personal lives, I would be very hesitant to give out something as personal as my phone to anyone. Especially an organization that looks to have released false information to the media about the deflated balls and at very least did not publicly refute that information when they knew it was wrong. I don't recall any personal information being released. Was that of Brady? The two ball guys? Either way, again, Goodell's decision made clear that on several occasions the NFL told Brady they wanted the phone to look at communications about deflating balls and the AFC championship game and that they had no problem with his lawyers creating a log of the texts with redactions for personal messages where necessary. And even more damning to this claim: Brady gave them -- handed over with redacting anything-- TWO personal cell phones, one from way before the time in question and one after the time in question (or maybe he gave them one and the other he offered but the NFL said no thanks that's irrelevant...I can't remember off the top of my head). Of course the one the NFL wanted to look at, the one from around the time of the AFC championship game up to the time the investigation started (like Oct-March I believe), he coincidentally destroyed....again, despite knowing the NFL wanted to look at the texts. In a normal court with a jury, Brady is guilty beyond doubt. That's why this decision is dumb. He's getting off on minor technicalities. Some cop f***ed up paperwork and the criminal gets off free despite convincing circumstantial evidence that he committed the crime.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 12:46 PM) Isnt this his NFL issued phone, though? If your company gives you a phone, I think you would have to give it to your boss if he said to give it to him And the arbitrator should not be the same guy that issued the punishment that caused the arbitration I always assumed the initial penalty is handed down by some other NFL exec that deals with punishment and then Goodell acts as the arbitrator of that decision. But I don't know for sure.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 12:07 PM) But that same argument applies to Goodell! You can't just keep letting him do whatever the hell he wants regardless of contractual due process. He's been slapped down by external review time and time again. I guess that's why i'm not concerned about him though. There's an appeal process that seems to work with Goodell setting a punishment and then the player getting it knocked down. I almost view it as a negotiation. Goodell starts high knowing the appeal is going to bring it down to whatever length is a good compromise. And really, while I don't care that some of those suspensions got reduced, I would have been fine with what the original punishment was too. None of them were totally egregious IMO.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 12:03 PM) All of this over some footballs that may or may not have been slightly underinflated. And I get that. It's all silly. At the same time, if you allow people to skirt small rules, they'll keep doing it and keep testing the limits to gain an edge. That Patriots being a perfect example. I don't think we want that either.

2015-2016 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 12:01 PM) Jenks, Look at page 20 where they cite the Bountgate case. Tagliabue vacated a suspension based on obstruction saying that it had never been done in NFL history and that many times players basically lied and were not punished for it. That is the precedent. If the NFL wants to change this precedent they should have bargained for the ability to suspend players who do not cooperate with the process. See my edit. At least per his quote, the player was being suspended solely for not cooperating. Not also violating the rule. I'm sure it was being applied to other players that didn't want to testify about what was going on. That's a distinguishable case from Brady violating the rules AND trying to cover up his involvement.
