I can't wait for Melo to resign with the Knicks and Minnesota to hang onto Love for at least half of next season. And then this whole summer will be a big waste of time.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 10:20 AM) Right, and wade even more so. That's why I'm surprised. I thought they'd all opt in for one more year before this. I think Bosh is still valuable. I think a few teams would give him 17-18 a year or more if he was a true FA. Wade I agree, he's lost even more value. I don't think he's worth more than 10-12 at this point. He can't hold up for an entire season and a long post season run. And he doesn't play defense anymore. Still, the Heat could be loyal and try to get another couple of years out of them. They could opt out and sign for more years. Instead of 2 for 42, do 3 for 50-55. Then the cap numbers work out to add some flexibility.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) Sure you can, if the original law is unjust, further enforcement is equally unjust. /shrugs Its just being vindictive. http://www.ellisisland.org/genealogy/ellis...and_history.asp Everyone should get the same chance that my family did to come into the US. We should not continue the terrible laws that were created in the 20's: And so the cycle continues. Remember, we were all once the people that other people did not want in the US, and the only reason any of us had the chance to come here is because of the kindness of others in this country already. I will not forget that no matter what. You can't compare the two situations. The country is entirely different and operates in an entirely different way. If our attitude was, come here and don't cause trouble and fend for yourself, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But that's not 2014 America and you know it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 10:05 AM) And states have been happy and willing to issue drivers licenses and social security cards to undocumented immigrants, right? Hell, California hasn't even done that yet. Hence, flat fine that can reasonably be paid by everyone. Not so huge that people will refuse to pay it in favor of remaining undocumented. You could convince me that $2000 would work better, but higher than that and people are going to just stay undocumented because they can't come up with it from working in the fields. And then they face a 13 year immigration system gauntlet if everything works correctly. It happened/happens, yes. Hell, I just had an illegal sue a business client of mine in federal court and he had both. And the law PROTECTS them from being outed. If they can't pay it, see ya later. Should have thought twice about coming into another country illegally. Someone else above made this point - other countries are WAY more strict about their immigration policy. Why is the US always criticized for trying to control their immigration A LITTLE BIT? It makes no sense.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 10:00 AM) Great. Please tell me how to document that? I'm sure in some situations it's going to be difficult, but you're going to be before a judge on this stuff, answering questions under oath. When was a drivers license issued, when did you get an SS card, where have you lived in the US, you have a child with US citizenship who is 22, etc. I mean this applies to people who were here before 2011, right. How are they going to prove that?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) No you don't. Most are going to be working jobs where they wouldn't pay any taxes anyway. They'd get that money back, and a lot more, under our current tax code. And that is long before we get into social services provided. Fine, then see above. Make it a yearly penalty. You should not be able to sneak into this country, abuse its services and then be provided temporary status (no matter how long it takes) without SOME kind of penalty.

Orphans at our door
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) Great. And this can possibly be done how? By definition they're "unregistered". How do you calculate taxes if you don't have confirmable taxable income? They would, btw, be paying taxes from the moment they became registered in addition to the $1000 fine. Which would be part of the point. Then make it a penalty per year they've been here. A $1,000 fine is ignoring criminal behavior.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) If registration, criminal background check, $1000 penalty, 6 years of working followed by a renewal, 4 additional years of working prior to being able to apply for permanent resident status, 3 years as a permanent resident (13 years of waiting total), and a giant additional dump of money onto border security = blanket amnesty, then anything that allows an immigrant to be alive would be considered blanket amnesty by you. Not enough. I want back taxes owed and not paid.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 09:46 AM) Yesterday I was driving and listening to all the rumors, this time, I actually think the Bulls management is doing all possible to get one of the big acquisitions this year. My favorite non superstar offseason would be somehow getting Aflallo AND still getting number 8 from sac. Aflallo /McDermott, mirotic and keeping MDJ is actually a lot more shooting to the team. They did everything right in 2010 too but missed out and got blamed for it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 09:36 AM) Remind me again of why Eric cantor lost his primary. I seem to recall that he was attacked from the right for supporting "amnesty," which is what the right calls any immigration policy that isn't building a giant wall and deporting millions of people. There are morons on the right on this issue, that's true, but in one fell swoop giving every illegal legal status for a $500 fine isn't a good policy either.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) And when one house of Congress has passed a very large policy overhaul that the other house of Congress refuses to even take up a vote on, you should ask which political party that word applies to. The one that was essentially blanket amnesty? No thanks.

The Republican Thread
PC Police Unite! http://defamer.gawker.com/gary-oldman-defe...-a-f-1595210613 I'm sure you'll have fun with that one. I mostly agree with him. Everyone has said awful things before, and if you say you haven't you're just lying. The problem with Gibson and Baldwin though is that it's happened multiple times with them. More of a trend than a mistake. I 100% believe the liberal/conservative stuff about who can get away with what. That absolutely happens.

2014-2015 NBA thread
I'm beginning to think just focus on Love. Everything I read/hear about Melo, and what I've seen of him in the past, he just wants to be paid. He doesn't care about winning as much. I mean, isn't it a sign that the Bulls had to reach out to people that know him and have coached him to find out what kind of guy he is? For a superstar that can't be a good sign.

Orphans at our door
Yuck it up all you want, it's the truth. http://news.yahoo.com/us-releases-immigran...--politics.html They're allowing entire families in, "processing" them, and then setting them free with the instruction to show up at an immigration court later on. As if they'll follow the rules. This is a joke of a "policy." I'm not opposed to some compromise on a lot of illegals, but simply ignoring the problem is not a solution.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 08:55 AM) I read LeBron and Melo to Philly. MCW-WIGGINS-BRON-MELO-NOEL would be unfair. I don't know why my auto correct decided to capitalize all that. The guys on ESPN (Broussard/Windhorst) were on Mike & Mike this morning and basically said a Lebron/Melo pairing is impossible. No team has enough cap space to make it work.

Orphans at our door
Btw if Obama and the left actually cared about these people and their parents, they would have tried to implement some kind of compromise on immigration. Fix the time it takes to get a work visa or even citizenship. But we all know the end game is complete amnesty because then dems get another X million votes. So Obama does the next best thing - pretend illegals aren't streaming across the border and a new generation of dems are born.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 08:14 PM) Children wouldnt be coming here alone if we allowed their parents to legally immigrate with them. Most parents dont send their children away to foreign countries unless the situation is extremely dire. I disagree. If you want to come to America, follow the laws, you should have a chance. Just like the rest of us. The country isnt full, we have plenty of space. The arguments against are based on the idea that an American is deserving of more, just because they were born in America. It completely turns a blind eye to our history, to the very essence of what it means to be an American. America is nothing more than a hollow shell if we prevent others from having the same freedom and opportunity that we claim to espouse to the world. Ironic. Also funny when we have the most people on welfare in the history of the country right now. You're going to bleed this country to death with an open border policy.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 05:51 PM) You do realize we're talking about young children. Jenks, you decide what happens to that 8 year old that shows up without anyone, what do you do? Send them where exactly? How do they get there? I read a headline somewhere that over 80% of the recent influx are males over 14.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) Cost of doing business more expensive? Increased supply = lower cost. And legal immigration is more important than welfare. I personally think that there is a very large economic benefit to have welfare, but if the rich want to see what happens if we get rid of it, I can also play that game. More welfare recipients = more welfare benefits = more taxes needed to pay for the increase = increased cost of doing business to pay the taxes. I'd like to see some data that illegal immigrants become a net job producer. I find that incredibly illogical. It's pretty tough to open a business when you're an illegal alien. Or hell, maybe not given how this country has been the last decade about immigration. s***, we probably provide government grants for it. Or are you saying that more supply means more cheap labor, which again just screws people already here. Great, now all the poor Americans b****ing about not being paid $30/hr at McDonalds are out of work because immigrants are happy to make $7.50/hr. How does that system help anyone?
-
Orphans at our door
It's the most capitalist idea to flood the market and make the cost of doing business more expensive for everyone? Really? And where does welfare play in to your "truly free market economy?"

Orphans at our door
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) I would wager that your family also had a desire to become Americans, and not with a hyphen. They desired to learn English, to fit in, to succeed. You are fooling yourselves if you think these kids are here seeking merely refuge from violence, although there are sure to be some that fit that category. They are here for the promised goods that they think are there for the taking. Taking from you, me and anyone else that pays taxes. It is a very Christian thing, a very noble thing, to desire to help. But at some point the help becomes a detriment to your own survival and/or well being. Sure, easy to SAY "well you can do without the latest iPhone to help some poor kids". But when it comes to actually DOING that? People seem to want to use 'tax dollars' to help, conveniently forgetting that those also come from your pocket. Specifically the middle class pocket. And then we b**** and whine that the middle class is no longer the best in the world. And we wonder why.

Orphans at our door
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 04:32 PM) I think they're coming here with expectation of escaping violence and abuse, not to get some of that sweet, sweet welfare money. Probably true but they're still getting it. They're causing issues at border towns, especially at medical clinics. Again, half of Detroit is probably worse off. But that's ok? Let's save the children of Mexico first?

Orphans at our door
If they came here without any expectation of government aid I might be with you. But we're just adding more problems to a list of existing problems. It's moronic policy.

Half of Detroit can't pay their water bills, but yep, let's add hundreds of thousands of refugees on the public dollar. Brilliant policy. http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2014/06/23/nea...pay-their-bill/
