  1. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) The actual word 'redskin' carries a negative connotation whereas 'Indians' and 'Braves' do not. 'Seminoles' and 'Blackhawks' are named for specific tribes/people. There was actually a serious PC backlash against the name 'Seminoles' about a 15 or so years ago but then the Seminole tribe in Florida told everybody that they fully approve of the nickname and that everybody else had not right 'being offended' on their behalf, so that one is pretty much settled. As for the Fighting Irish, well the liberals are never going to go to bat for white Catholics, so that name will probably be around forever. That's exactly why this issue is nonsense. You can't take an offensive or derogatory term and just unilaterally decide it's not offensive because X number of people say it's not. On the one hand we can't have guys dancing around in a headdress, but we can have a half naked guy running around on a horse with a spear on fire, all because some $$ was handed over. It's got jack s*** to do with how "offensive" something is. And i'm still not clear on the ruling, is it just trademarks with the name in it? Or does it include the logo of the indian face?
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) Redskins is the only "racist term" in the bunch you mentioned. Thats the only reason these bored ass people can attack it. I guess, but how is the photo of a stereotypical "indian" not just as offensive?
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 02:29 PM) I'm still not sure how Fighting Irish is less offensive than Redskins? They both are derogatory terms for a group of people based on out of date stereotypes. Come on, you know why. White Guilt.
  4. QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 02:47 PM) Thought Broussard had Lebron to Miami the whole time. Nope, he's a boob. I think Stephen A. Smith actually was the only one that was saying Miami the whole time, but I could be wrong.
  5. The Bulls were Lebron's #1 pick according to Broussard 4 years ago so...
  6. You guys don't think it's a little scary that this office of people can cost a company millions over what they think is appropriate/not appropriate? Not saying it's the wrong decision, but I dunno that these people should be deciding what is offensive and what's not. And going forward, how are the Cleveland Indians, Florida State Seminoles, etc. trademarks going to be treated? Might as well go after them too and hit them where it hurts. Also, while I do think "Redskins" is inappropriate and probably offensive to some, at this point wtf does it matter? It's been the name for decades. People don't associate redskins with indians, they associate redskins with a football team. It's a nice gesture and all, but we really need to start focusing our collective attention on s*** that actually matters. edit: Or hey, how about this one:
  7. I need to find a good range. I usually hit up the one in Hillside (Fresh Meadows) but it's not the greatest.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 12:39 PM) I have a PDF of the simple golf swing, but I dont know where to put it so you all can access it. If you google it it's like 3 results from the top.
  9. If it's on the Bleacher Report, it must be true.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 11:16 AM) They were perpetually linked to Kevin Garnett, whiffed on 2000 free agency period (signed eddie robinson instead), Kobe Bryant in 06, Bron/Bosh/Wade in 2010, Howard sweepstakes. The bulls of 00-08 were full of assets that they could have swung for a big splash. But they fall in love with their Kirk Hinrichs and cannot let go. Instead of a "WHAT COULD THEY HAVE DONE", look at the superstars that have switched hands since 2000 and then tell me the bulls assets could have never landed anyone. Where there's a will there's a way. That Kobe trade in 2006 was never happening. Totally a contract negotiation move.

  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 11:05 AM) Apparently their presentation to Lebron has become an ongoing joke and was basically a powerpoint. I know one rumor was Reinsdorf brought out his box of 6 championships rings and put them on the table and basically said, let's do this. What more did he need? Really that's a part of my hate for Lebron. Dude's ego needs to be jerked off 24/7.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) It isn't about logic, it is about their history. They have not been able to pull of the "big" move. I would sure be happy if they proved me wrong. While I share this position, to be fair, they did try in 2010. They made moves to get prepared for the big move. It just didn't work out. I still wonder what happens in 2010 if they had Lee instead of Boozer. Would that have been enough to overcome the Heat?
  14. Zero % chance of Melo to the Heat. It would require Wade to opt out. And why would he do that? He's guaranteed 42 million the next 2 seasons, despite being a bench guy now. He won't get that on the open market. And although unlikely, what if he opts out to resign with the Heat and they offer him substantially less. Manu got 7 million this last year, and that seemed like an overpay. Who played better this year? Who still looks like he's got some gas in the tank? So now you're asking Lebron to make a bunch less (he'd probably do it given his endorsement money), Bosh to take way less (maybe) and Carmelo to take way less (maybe). All for a team that has Lebron, but still wouldn't have much of a bench.
  15. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 10:51 AM) Why would Love want to go to Boston...? There's some connection to the franchise. Either he knew a player/management person or he was a gigantic fan as a kid. It's got nothing to do with the current roster. Also, keep in mind this is Simmons, a Boston homer. Of course his Boston contacts are going to be all happy and upbeat about their chances. It all probably stems from Love going to Fenway with Rondo.
  16. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 08:37 PM) Does anyone have advice for someone who wants to learn how to play golf, but is very limited on funds. I already have some hand-me-down clubs, but I can't afford to take lessons or anything like that. there is a public 9-hole course in my area that is less than $15 to play, but I can't get the damn ball in the air, so I don't play. Is there really no way to improve my swing mechanics without taking lessons? Do the teaching shows on the golf channel actually help novices? Looking for as many ideas as I can get. Been trying to learn for a few years. I had it a couple years ago, but found the sweet spot in October and the weather went south and I lost it over the winter because I had no time to keep practicing. The next spring went to the range and haven't been able to find it again. It seems as the time went on my swing just kept getting worse and worse. Going out to the range for the first time in a while this week, and I kinda want it to be constructive and not just a waste of $. So for those who play often: Should I put this on hold until I have more disposable income, or should I keep trying? You gotta go out and hit. Golf is all muscle memory. If you don't swing a club enough, there's no way you're going to make consistent contact with the ball. I agree generally with the idea that you either have a natural swing or you don't, but that doesn't mean you can't create a swing with practice. It's like a baseball swing. Everyone can do it, some better than others. I think if you're going to be serious about it, you should hit a range a minimum of 3-4 times, or get a net and hit balls in your backyard (the only problem with this is you can't see where the ball ends up. You could be slicing the crap out of the ball and never really know. Although if you're having issues even getting the ball in the air, maybe that's a good first step). Then save up some money for a lesson. After 3-4 trips (so 2-300 balls probably), you'll have an idea of how your swing feels and how you're hitting the ball. Then when you have your lesson, you'll be able to know and understand what the teacher is trying to tell you. I don't think going to a teacher straight away without swinging a club is going to be very beneficial. He'll put the ball in the right part of the stance, he'll help you with your grip, he'll tell you how your arms should on the backswing and the follow through and all that (all of this stuff, btw, you can get for free on the internet/youtube/the golf channel shows). But I think you have to know what YOUR swing is like and how it feels first. Do you have any friends that play? That's also a helpful resource if any of them are decent. I'm no tour pro, but I've had enough exposure/success to know what is/isn't a good thing in a swing. So I can offer tips to friends that help. A pro is gong to be better, but obviously cost money. Any of you guys watch Feherty on the Golf Channel? It's great. One, because he's weird and hilarious, and two, you get a backstory on some well known pros. After 4-5 episodes, you quickly realize that the big names (Bubba, Kuchar, etc.) all started at various ages, but when they did start, they played constantly. And that's why they're good. They played daily for years straight. They got that muscle memory down.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 10:30 PM) Not until they drop their nuclear program. Yeah, that whole annihilation of an allies thing doesn't help.
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) Another thing you can do is to go into a Golf Galaxy or similar type golf store and act as though you are in the market for a set of clubs. Tell them you want to hit the club on their simulator. Usually you can hit some balls and get some free advice from the guys there just on the premise of being a potential customer. Another good book is Ben Hogan's 5 fundamentals of modern golf. Some great illustrations and instruction in there (although Hogan didn't always seem to explain really well what he actually did in his own swing). To me, golf has always been a game where you either had a natural knack for it, or you didn't. Certainly you can make some major improvement with lessons, but the people who are really good golfers generally have a pretty good knack for it just naturally. I've been struggling with my game a bit as well. I've always been a pretty natural golfer; I can pick up a club after not playing for two years and go out and shoot bogey golf. Then I start playing regularly and start picking up all these nasty habits somehow. Case in point, since I joined this club, I'm practicing or playing 4-5 times a week now. Short game has seen major improvements, but my swing is just all over the damn place. One day I'm pulling my drives left, the next day I've got this power fade going on. The irons I've been apparently fighting an early release and just yanking everything left. Golf is a really humbling, frustrating game. As soon as you think everything is coming together, something goes wrong just to keep you honest. Then on your last hole of the round, the golf gods have a way of throwing you a bone and you'll hit your best shot of the day, just to keep you coming back to the masochism. Looking at taking a few lessons myself. I've played 3-4 holes perfect before, just awesome drives, 2nd shots and putts, and then followed it up with 3 awful holes where i'm all over the place and hitting shots fat. Consistency is why the guys on the tour are on the tour. When friends and I play and we hit terrible shots or have terrible holes, we laugh and scream "GOLFING!" Because that's what it is - a bunch of terrible/not good stuff that pisses you off, and then you hit one great shot and it's all worth it.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) Well, saying you want to be the Heat means you are doing their formula, which worked very well for them. You want to be the Heat. What you dont want to be is a cheap version of the Heat Really it just comes down to Wade. If Wade was Wade, that's a close series. But he was terrible, especially on defense. It didn't help that guys like Chalmers, Allen, Battier fell off too. They not only went cheap, but they stayed old.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) I bet there is very little of Danny next season. Bran too I bet. Btw, for those that watch the show but haven't read the books, if you want some good backstory on each episode, check out the ask the maester series on grantland: http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/...eason-4-finale/ Even for me, a book reader, it was helpful to connect some dots that I had forgotten about.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) I mean, what we've basically found out is antagonistic dictators whom threaten war to retain strength at home are preferable to chaos, even from a human rights perspective (at this point right?) The chaos has opened up even more genocidal situations than before. Really? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_...sein's_Iraq

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 17, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) Re-Read the last two books, lot's of stuff to still hit. They've spent next to zero time in Dorne and Braavos. Yeah I started to last night. I mean I know stuff happens, but it's not nearly as cool as the stuff in the first 3 books.
  25. So we implement these measures, and when we find out they have a disparate impact on minorities, you guys will be the first to scream unconstitutional right?
