Dr. V's Magical Putter
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) DId you actually not read the article where the person was clearly becoming more and more emotionally unstable as the grantland writer pushed forward? Because the lies were found out. Again, are you saying reporters shouldn't report the truth if it will be damaging to the subject? edit: I liked how you phrased that: "pushed forward," as if this guy had an agenda to ruin the person from the start.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) "Oh no, a reporter is going to reveal that I'm transgendered. Oh look, a plastic bag." No one else got that possibility as they were reading it, that having this part of her life revealed publicly against her wishes could push the person to that? So reporters should ignore the truth when it may negatively effect the subject? Despite its importance to the story? And that was her 2nd suicide attempt. Pretty clear he/she had some issues in her life before this reporter got involved.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 03:41 PM) And if the answer is that a person is transgendered that should still be the case? Absolutely. Why wouldn't it? It's the truth. And let's not pretend like this person was hurt about it. He/she was dead before this was published.

Dr. V's Magical Putter
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) It's an irrelevant detail that just "makes it more crazy" and yet winds up receiving the featured crescendo as though it's the biggest, most important reveal. You could write this story as the person being a con artist without the personal part. Totally disagree. If you're hiding your past and lying about it, telling people why is pretty critical.

And really, if you're reporting this story and find out this information, are you saying you would not have reported it?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) A person being transgendered is not the big reveal in an honest story and it doesn't make them a liar. He/she was a liar. A conman. That's the reveal of the story. That he/she was transgendered just made it more crazy.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) They need to simply make games for other systems. A Mario game that was available across all platforms would outsell the world. Bingo. Why Wii U didn't launch with a mario game and a zelda game is a mystery.

QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 10:42 PM) I love PC gaming on Steam. I'm surprised more people don't give up their consoles. I can't imagine playing FPS games with a controller. That has to be one of the worst examples of recent titles though, since it requires all this just to get up and running: "Steam account required for game activation and installation. Initial activation requires internet connection and a valid Rockstar Social Club account (13+ to register); Online play requires log-in to Rockstar Social Club (13+); software installation required including GameShield IronWrap; DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)." Generally, you just pop in a Steam code and download and play. Also you can't beat Steam sales. It's still a Steam issue though, that's the thing. Steam apparently keeps claiming that it's Rockstar's fault for not providing enough game keys, but that's not stopping them (or Amazon, their partner) from selling the games. In other words, they're selling a game that they know their customers can't obtain a key for; a key that is required to play the game, even offline. I buy a ton of games through Steam, so it's not like I hate them, but in this instance they're a huge fail.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 12:07 PM) Cliff's mom on his decision. Doesn't mention Kansas tradition: Added his mother, Latillia Alexander: “John Groce is great. I know, most definitely, John Groce would care for him on and off the court, but I think (Kansas coach) Bill Self will get him to the next level.” A guy like Cliff isn't going to "develop" in his one year. He's a top 5 pick unless he gets injured.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 11:47 AM) I agree with that, but if you already have the coach that Kansas wants, you are probably in good shape. And my stance is the coach makes a difference. IMO, coaches have a fondness for the Blue Blood schools, not necessarily the players. Many believe the pinnacle of their profession is Kansas, Kentucky, UNC. If Kansas sells itself to players, there really would be no need to pay big money to a big name coach. Self at Illinois for a 20-25 year run would have been happy times for Illini fans. Probably a lot like Izzo in East Lansing. Multiple Final Fours. And championships. He would have made Illinois a perennial power given the state of the program while he was there and his ability to recruit. Sigh.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) Not only college, but MIT. I agree, this could really be a great storyline for him. Im worried they are gonna rush it and kick him out of college because his roomates girlfriend hates him and rats on him Was it MIT? I thought it was just a made up college. I'm surprised they didn't have him go to UC or NW. Still though, this is a guy who was paid to take the ACT/SAT and scored nearly perfectly. They made it clear he was some kind of genius. I just thought they could have used a better story if they're going to use the bad grade as a way to get Lip to try harder at school. And I agree that's the most interesting storyline in the show. Lip has always been my favorite character. The writers/directors fascination with Debbie kind of creeps me out. She can't pass for a high schooler and I think it's absurd that they want the audience to believe that the high schooler actually buys it.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) It becomes important because look at who they can hire. They don't get the hot MAC coach to take over. Exactly. I forgot Gillespie at Kentucky too. Hiring miscues and short-term issues are quickly solved by hiring the best coach available.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) I'm saying it's both. It doesn't have to be black and white. Kansas I imagine will struggle mightily if they higher the wrong guy compared to other top schools. See also, Mike Davis at Indiana, Bruce Weber at Illinois, Tubby at Kentucky, Matt Doherty at UNC, etc. But really those blue blood programs like Kentucky/Kansas/UNC are only down for so long. That's where the "school" becomes so important.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) That's nice that he is great defensively but he isn't a top 10 or even top 20-30 player in the country like much of the media builds him up to be. I mean Dan Dakich says he would take Craft over every other player in the country which is so laughably stupid it makes me question everything else Dakich says about basketball. I also find it funny that for all the talk about what a hard worker Craft is (and he does play exceptionally hard) that his offensive game hasn't really improved at all from his freshman year to his senior year. But he's not exactly a liability out there either. He's an A or A+ defender and effort guy, and an average at best offensive guy. He still makes plays (see the MSU comeback this year, the shot in the tourney last year, etc), i'm sure he's a great leader, he can shut down great players, and he's incredibly smart at the game. Taking him first on your team would be my choice IF you also could guarantee me some skilled offensive guys to go around him. Having a smart PG in college basketball is basically the key to being consistently good. And that's what Craft has given OSU for a number of years. Ugh, I feel dirty now.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 06:57 PM) Many people connect his retirement with gambling, ie. the s*** got out of control and Stern told him to pull it together. And 9/11 was an inside job. The only person i've ever heard equate Jordan's gambling with some kind of Stern reprimand is Bill Simmons. And we all know what kind of access/inside information he has - not much unless it's about the Celtics or post-2005. It would make no sense for Stern to do ANYTHING to Jordan in the 90's. He was growing the brand of the NBA more than anyone could have dreamed. I think it's entirely reasonable for MJ to walk away after dominating the sport for three years AND having a major life altering event like the murder of his father. The thing with baseball was strange, but MJ's a strange, competitive dude. I think it's reasonable to assume that his ego just got in the way and he thought of the whole thing as another challenge he could master. And his retirement in 98 is even more understandable - issues with Krause, he had to follow up on his threats not to return if Phil didn't, three straights championships with the last one being the most grueling, his brand/businesses were booming, he had nothing else to "win" in basketball, etc.

Law/Legal Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) Sitting on a planning commission and dealing with a bankrupt developer, I have seen some of these things. The big thing you have to figure out is if there is anything in the platting that lists these kinds of items. If it does you can take it to whoever your planning agency is and complain about it, and it is their duty to enforce that agreement. If it is only a covenant between you and the HOA, you are pretty screwed. Your only real route would be the legal route, which is time and money intensive. If it were me I would start by calling your local City/County agency that oversees planning and go from there. Contacting your local city/village/township office might help. The developer/management company might be in some kind of violation of a code about lighting, which could come with a penalty if it's not fixed in a reasonable amount of time.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) I'm sure the developer could do something to the management company if they wanted to, but it's very clear that they don't. Yeah, s***ty all around really. But like I said, the more you put everyone on notice, the more they'll be responsible later if something does happen. That's about all you can do in addition to annoying them with calls/complaints.

2014 TV thread
Caught up on some TV last night: Downton Abbey - 2nd episode (3rd hour) with the singer...Kinda jumped the shark a bit for me. The major whoa part of the episode seemed a little too unbelievable, even in that time period. Shameless - great. Excited this is back on. More Rossum T&A, more good Frank lines. My only "complaint" was that Lip's "D" didn't make any sense. He's supposed to be some genius, right? House of Lies - Ok. Still not sure why I keep up with this show, but it's got a cool look/style to it.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) All the developer says is that it's the management company's responsibility to get it fixed. I even went to the sales office and let the sales manager have it right in front of a potential customer, which he really didn't appreciate, but he insisted that he had no power to influence anything. I will re-read the HOA agreement, but so far I haven't found anything listed about homeowner recourse against the HOA. I'm sure it's the management company's responsibility per their agreement with the developer, but at the end of the day the developer is the one hiring the management company. They should be able to call and threaten to rescind the contract for non-performance if they really wanted to.
