QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 09:02 AM) The latter. Good firm, but tough to get a job. And they're pretty notorious for hiring clerks and then stringing them along before letting them go without a full-time associate position.

I thought I read that he got knocked out? The guy started to beat him up before taking off his clothes to eat his face.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ May 31, 2012 -> 12:33 PM) The missed foul on Rondo was really bad but good luck seeing the kick in real time when there was a lot of contact by Garnett up top. That would have taken an incredible piece of officiating by the refs to catch that one. KG is the last one that can complain about no-calls. He sets illegal screens every single trip down the court.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 31, 2012 -> 12:04 PM) I should clarify...they didn't blow the case, they blew the relationship with the parents somehow. So this happened near Akron, OH. We were trying to convince the family to go with a prominent and experienced Chicago firm rather than some small-time dirtbag from Akron. I spent all kinds of time with the family explaining this. Myself, the attorney I knew, and the Managing Partner of the firm made several trips to Akron to meet with the family. As I mentioned, I was sort of dating the sister, so I constantly had my finger on the pulse of the situation and kept the firm updated...finally they agreed to the representation, and I actually remember having a few celebratory drinks the evening I got the text from the attorney telling me this. Then the next day I am talking to the sister and she is saying the parents aren't sure about the attorney...that he doesn't seem to connect with them...that the parents of the other kids involved think they should all go with a firm in Akron, that it will look greedy if they bring in some big firm from Chicago.... As far as I see it, the attorney didn't do a good job of making the family feel comfortable and explaining to them how they were more equipped to get them the best possible result at the end of the day. Instead, he tried too hard to impress them with how smart he was and how much money he had...I still don't really know everything, to be honest...I just know I handed this thing on a platter to them, gave them every piece of inside info they could possibly want, and they still couldn't seal the deal. At the end of the day, they need to feel comfortable, so you can't really fault them for that. This city has a lot of slick lawyers that don't really care about what they're doing, just that they're doing it. I had a case I was bringing in where a downstate high school kid had a lung procedure done and the doctor left the last inch of the needle in his lung. He was probably going to get a scholarship to play D1 football but then this thing put it all into jeopardy. That and he became basically uninsurable because of it. It would have been worth some dough. I had them all signed up and everything, but the mother wouldn't agree to put in the contract that she'd be responsible for our costs (thinking that if we spent thousands on experts or whatever and then didn't get any money at the end she'd have to pay us back). I told her this wasn't an issue at all, that we'd front the cost, that they'd already offered her some money without any attorneys in the mix and that it wouldn't be a problem. Still, she didn't' want to do that. I pleaded for my partner to waive that in the contract but he refused to take the case. It was a sure fire six figure type case but he didn't feel like "paying for the privilege" of representing her. That 33% would have been great in my pocket for this newborn of mine on the way.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:39 AM) That was part of the deal...my family knows a prominent attorney there. I was still a law student but my dad is an attorney. The deal was that one of us would have gotten the 1/3 of their third standard deal. I would have literally been a millionaire before the age of thirty. This case was an attorney's wet dream: beautiful hs student, athlete, academic scholarship, junior miss america pageant, attending an exclusive private high school with a large endowment. She is in biology class and they have a substitute teacher. They are performing a lab experiment, which includes some bunson burners. The teacher fails to instruct any of the students to wear their safety goggles. Does many, many other negligent things. Causes a minor explosion which burns several students, one in particular, who is exposed to third-degree burns to some 75% of her body, including most of her face. There was huge negligence at every step and turn, the girl was absolutely beautiful, intelligent, athletic, etc. I met the girl's sister through a friend and we began dating briefly. I recommended her family talk to this attorney, as he was a member of a very prominent Chicago firm. I set it all up, made several trips to Akron, Ohio to visit with the family, etc. Got a call one night from the attorney saying the family had agreed to be represented by the firm, all that was needed was their signatures. Then it all fell apart... Ugh, that sucks so much. For everyone involved.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:01 AM) I got a job clerking at a fancy pants firm basically because I knew a guy there and I brought them this monster case...they proceeded to offend the family and blow the chance to represent them. The guy who did represent the family settled the thing for $30 million or something. They kept me on until I graduated and sort of unceremoniously kicked me to the curb. Wow dude. I would have shopped that around a little. Most plaintiff firms will give you a 33% finders fee.

Yeah my law school experience sucked since I went at night while working full time. Not many opportunities to network. I got extremely lucky and just happened to get a call back from my current firm from a craigslist post.

Make sure to give it a solid 4-5 episodes before writing it off though if you're not enthralled. I think people who watch it years later, after reading about how great it is, expect something spectacular right off the bat. It's a slow character build show. You can't watch 1 or 2 episodes and come to an informed judgment about it. If you're halfway through the season and it's not doing anything for you, then it's probably safe to stop.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:22 AM) Personally I'd go with Miami getting screwed and losing to Boston and then Boston getting swept in the finals, but your way works too. just makes me more nervous to have them get NBA-finals close again. If Boston makes another Finals guys like Simmons would never shut up about it. And if Miami makes it but failed, that continues to diminish Lebron's legacy as a "King" of basketball. I guess that's my thinking. Either way, I don't see anyone beating SA four times.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2012 -> 12:07 AM) That is like calling Google a search engine. Except that Facebook is step 2 or 3 in that search process instead of the first stop, which is why I don't understand where the insane value comes from. Is it a valuable commodity? Yes. Is it a hundreds of billions worth? I don't see it. And ok, so you can get some coupons for "liking" a restaurant, but that's one of a bunch of companies that offer the same thing - yelp, foursquare, etc. - companies that have been doing it for a little longer. Just like Facebook is one of many companies that can do photo sharing (Instagram was a big purchase for that obviously). I don't see them being able to generate a revenue stream like Google when Google already exists and owns what Facebook wants to do (even in a slightly different form). I'm not bashing people that use Facebook, i'm just saying I don't see where the value comes from.

What an awful, awful game last night. Boston plays really well (Rondo with an all-time classic) and the refs completely screw them. Obviously it's Boston's fault that they gave up a double digit lead, but playing 5-8 in the last 5 minutes of a game is pretty tough to overcome. Though I guess Boston getting screwed and Miami getting swept in the Finals is about the best we can hope for right?

2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread
Speaking of recruiting, apparently Jalen James, a 2013 verbal commit to Illinois, has opened up his recruiting. Probably not happy with Groce going after "better" guards in the same class. Add that to the sudden loss of Chew, an assistant coach for all of 6 weeks, and something weird is going on in C-U.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 30, 2012 -> 04:04 PM) Rock, The reason I used Leuer is he was the "guard who grew to be a big man". I didnt use his frosh 3 stats as he shot something like 46% on small sample size. That being said they are completely different players, and I think Davis compares more to Garnett or Noah. And which way he goes will really depend on how he develops. And I agree he has a high ceiling, Im just not sure how many years it will take to get there, which isnt what I like to be saying about a #1 nba pick. Jenks, Sure Davis was in foul trouble @ IU, but he didnt do that well in the NCAA tourney either. He may be an All-Star in 2-3 years, I dont know. That is why Im not in love with him as the #1 pick, especially considering the fact that there are other raw big men in this draft who just werent as hyped. But you're faulting him for not having offensive stats when he purposefully passes up his shots. Yeah, he had bad shooting nights, but lots of guys do. I've never seen a guy dominate a game while shooting 1 for 10 like he did. He's obviously has to work on his offensive game, but the potential is definitely there.

I don't think Davis' college game stats translate well. The Indiana game he was in foul trouble the majority of the time (gee, @ Indiana, that's never happened before!). I think he's going to be pretty dominate. Maybe not right away, but in 2-3 seasons. The problem is he's going into the exact wrong place. He needs to go to a team and learn the NBA game for a year. Instead he's going to be learning on the fly with a crappy supporting cast.

Can someone please explain why the Bulls keep getting linked to Pau Gasol in some sort of Deng + extra player package? Why on earth would the Bulls do this? Gasol is Boozer with a slightly better defensive game. No thanks.

Refuse to pay tip ~ Family locked in restaurant
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 29, 2012 -> 02:44 PM) I know someone who puts a stack of 10 one-dollar bills on the table and tells the server "This is your tip. Every time you mess up, I take away a dollar." I always thought that was a good idea, but a ballsy one too. Ha. After watching that movie Waiting, I'd be terrified of finding a pubic hair in my food.

Refuse to pay tip ~ Family locked in restaurant
I always found tipping to be ridiculous, in just about any venue, especially restaurants. My wife and I normally go to dinner on friday or saturday night, anywhere from $40-50 for the meal between the two of us. I get a beer or two, she doesn't. So the total work in about 30 minutes is (1) bringing menus, (2) taking order, (3) bringing a beer or two, (4) delivering food, (5) bringing the check. And I'm supposed to fork over $10 bucks for that? $10 bucks for what amounts to running 4 to 5 errands? I tip guys at the Cell 20-30% because they're hauling a s*** ton of beer up and downstairs so that I can remain seated and enjoy the game. THAT is work. Bringing me some paper and a plate is not. I agree 100% that tipping should be outlawed and waitstaff should just be paid a decent wage.

Excellent officiating? Were we watching the same game? The 4 technical on Boston in a 10 minute span? They weren't terrible, but they were far from excellent. Last night sucked. I found myself rooting for Boston, which is sad because Boston is my 2nd most hated team behind Miami. By quarter three I was rooting for the meteor.
