2011 Video Game Catch-All Thread
Gears 3 is ok, at least the horde mode. Really that's about the only part of the game I'll play. The story sucks so hard in those games, and despite all of the reviews, I feel like the graphics are really starting to get dated on the 360. The options to add various defenses and upgrade them is a good twist though.

The Democrat Thread
Well, again, the various judges, administrators and gov't officials at all levels disagreed. I dunno why people in this country jump onto these media headlines as if they're the truth. See: Anthony, Casey. The public is given a shred of the entire story. Yeah, it sounds terrible that 7 of the 9 people suddenly recanted their testimony (from 20 something years ago), but I have to believe their reasoning for doing that was incredibly suspect and there was enough evidence established at his trial to still maintain the guilty verdict.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) Of course not, that's a silly thing to say. So if the majority of the country wants to cut taxes and cut gov't spending the gov't is obligated to listen to what its' citizens want? Is that how it's working?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 21, 2011 -> 06:59 PM) The SCOTUS has granted a temporary stay to review a certiorari petition for Troy Davis. They denied it. I haven't been following this story too closely, but seems to me that this guy had a LOT of chances for appeal throughout the last decade and each and every one of them failed. I get that it sounds terrible that witnesses recanted their testimony, but I have faith that if one of the 25, 30, 35+ judges/administrators that reviewed the case over the years would have found something questionable, something would have changed. This case was just great fodder for anti-capital punishment foes. I'm sure the devils in the details, which are never, ever reported accurately by the media.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 21, 2011 -> 03:54 PM) There was no tax and no rich. The existence of wealth stratification is not a necessary condition for the formation of government or for taxation. Wasn't the tax your work and what you brought to the tribe? And wasn't the "rich" the tribal elders, who had more (food, clothing, women, etc) than others? Replace taxes/money with physical ability/work and it's the same idea.

And I don't even want total forgiveness. Just give a year or 2 year break. Total US Student Debt is going to hit a trillion dollars this year. That's a lot of money to stimulate the economy.

Apparently Urlacher is back in Chicago and plans to play Sunday. Hopefully the team can rally around him and get a big W on the road. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/09/15/big...to-play-sunday/

For those in the Chicagoland Suburbs
Put me in the camp that just sees this as a wife with a gigantic grudge against her ex-husband who's moved onto bigger and better things. The fact that she's an analyst with Ely Lily doesn't exactly scream poor house, even with kids. Edit: And the fact that the Judge went after his attorney for him not showing up is ludicrous (unless he had been ordered specifically to appear). That's why you hire an attorney, so you don't have to go.

101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 01:44 PM) To explore the moral implications of positions followed through to their conclusions? That's a pretty standard method of evaluating ideas. So the only morals we need question is whether kicking an old lady to the curb is acceptable, not if people default on their promises and people lose out on opportunities because of it? As always, the Great Society will step in to save people like this old women. That doesn't mean we get to ignore the rights of the bank in this situation just because it's a s***ty one.

101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 01:42 PM) Exactly where I was trying to drag you. By having the bank put her out of her house, she basically becomes a ward of the taxpayers. Or best case scenario, she survives based on someone else's charity, probably with the assistance of the taxpayer. So really you should be fine with this result because she's being taken care of by the government and NOT some greedy slimy corporation?

Who is your guy for the GOP nomination?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) Hey calm down I specifically said its a partisan political narrative. It's basically the Democrat's version of the same "they want America to fail" stuff over Iraq for years. Fair enough.

101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) Let's assume that this 101 year old woman no longer had the ability to manage her own finances and this situation is no fault of her own. Why should she suffer? Is protecting creditors' rights to collect debt more important than not evicting 101 year olds? Why do you get to create random hypotheticals to fit your argument?

101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) At least someone gave an honest answer. Now the follow up question...what happens to her after the eviction? She's clearly not in a position to support herself and the legal caregivers for her have indicated a clear unwillingness to support her. Just send her to a nursing home and let Medicaid cover it? Well, being a conservative, clearly my answer is to let her die on the streets. Can't pay for your house. DEATH SENTENCE. Didn't the story say she moved in across the street? I'm sure she's being provided for by us in some capacity.

101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) You didn't answer my question. Is it a problem if a 101 year old woman is foreclosed on and evicted her home? My answer to your question would be..."is there a cognitive issue involved? Because that makes everything messy regardless of age." Not when she and/or her caregivers are given years and years and multiple opportunities to fix the problem BEFORE being evicted.

Who is your guy for the GOP nomination?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 01:30 PM) I don't know that anyone would disagree with this right now? The whole (liberal) narrative surrounding that jobs bill is that Republicans will pass a few token pieces to counter obstructionist claims but not anything significant that will actually help the economy, since a weak economy means a weak Obama. This is such bulls***, the idea that Republicans are stonewalling the country from getting better simply to win elections. BIG SURPRISE: People actually believe that what Obama wants to do would do MORE harm than good. GASP! NO! So it ain't so! I can't believe everyone doesn't agree with liberal fiscal policy. What a tragedy!

Who is your guy for the GOP nomination?
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 09:59 AM) I think, barring some super-major global or domestic event unforseen, the question of whether or not Obama holds the Presidency can be easily boiled down to two variables: --Does Perry or Romney win the nomination? --Has the economy improved, stayed the same, or gotten worse in the months or year prior to the election? Expressed as a sort of equation, using UE standard as a catch-all economic variable, I see it this way... if Perry wins the nomination, UE needs to be 10% or higher for him to beat Obama... if Romney, then UE needs to be 9% or higher. That's where I'd put it right now. I agree, though I think Obama is in more trouble than people think. If unemployment sticks around 9%, the Repubs have a really good shot at beating him.

101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 09:51 AM) Depending on how this worked... if the son was conducting financial dealings for the property that were either not communicated clearly to the property owner, or if he did anything otherwise illegal, he should be prosecuted. The other thing is, this is a good argument for making sure foreclosures are seen and reviewed by an actual judge, not just someone at a desk signing papers. Because once in a while, when you have a situation like this, I think a judge should have some power to grant temporary stay - with the condition that the mortgager gains possesion of the home in the event of the death or moving out of this resident. A 101 year old woman isn't going to be in that house forever, and this would even help the bank in some ways not look like the "bad guy" (even though they really aren't the bad guy at all, the son is). In other words, I am OK with the occasional exception being enforced by the authorities, within strict bounds. The problem is that even a judge won't hear all of these facts because the only person in front of him/her explaining what happened is the attorney for the bank. Obviously the son had every right to be there and explain the situation, and I have no doubt that any judge in cook county would have looked at the attorney for the bank and said "seriously?" and continued the matter for a few months so that a deal could be worked out. But, the son is an idiot, and ignored the notices. I dunno what else the bank is obligated to do in that scenario. Foreclosure and eviction is incredibly pro-tenant, so it's not like he was given 2 seconds to find alternate housing. He was given months and months of notice, multiple opportunities to stay the foreclosure in the court system, but didn't.
