2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread
Apparently Illinois destroyed West Virginia in a 20 minute scrimmage today. 45-9 before the scrubs got in to finish at 45-19. They dominated the boards and were diving all over the floor. Only summer ball, but a good sign if they're starting to take the season seriously already.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 01:20 PM) The mass media, at first, portrayed the Tea Party in a pretty favorable light. I think the prevalence of extreme right-wingers being the representatives of the movement is what repelled people from it, not some giant conspiracy against them. A lot of talking heads on the far right saw the movement, and decided to co-opt it to their own gains. That then drew in the far-right GOP wing, thus overwhelming the more libertarian streak that originally fostered the movement. So if you want to blame someone for their perception in the public eye, instead of pulling the unsubstantiated poor victim card, I'd blame those talking heads and politicians if I were you. They basically stole the concept and contorted it to their desires. I don't think it's some giant conspiracy. I think it's what they did to play to their liberal base. "Listen to these uneducated whack jobs! No government? Stop government spending? What are they thinking?! And they spit on black people. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 01:24 PM) No way is Miami getting the death sentence. If the ACC loses Miami, that will set off even more conference realignment which the NCAA/ESPN are so desperately trying to prevent. The whole thing is a joke anyways, I could care less what benefits a kid gets after hes in college. Just cant give him benefits before hes in, thats my opinion at least. Read the report. That's a big part of this scandal.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 01:05 PM) So, it's fair and now well supported statistically to say that the Tea Party is now overwhelmingly the activist, nativist Republican base, not some independent movement of outsiders, and no one will challenge me if I repeat that? Because of the bandwagon people. When it started, and I mean when tea party rallies were just starting, it was not just the fringe, extremist republicans that it had become. It was essentially a bunch of libertarians, which of course would be predominantly conservative-minded. As to NSS' point about the perception of the tea party, i'm guessing that has to do with how the media portrayed the group as a bunch of dumb racist rednecks. Most people don't like to associate with that kind of thing.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:35 PM) Take a look though, that's 7 years since they appeared in a BCS bowl. If Miami go the "Death Sentence", how much money does that cost the NCAA? This isn't Alabama or Florida getting it right now, this is a team that hasn't been at the top for a while. This isn't USC getting it over the Bush thing when they still were a powerhouse. This isn't Ohio State blocking its guys from playing in bowl games last year. This is a team that has been down from its peak for a long time. I put them in the same league as Notre Dame - a powerhouse that's a powerhouse even if they don't win. They bring in highly ranked recruiting classes nearly every year. 2012 they're currently at #5 according to Rivals. They're not at the peak they were in the early 00's, but they're right there. And I could give a s*** about how much this costs the NCAA. That joke of an organization makes bazillions every year.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) I think a bigger issue is Miami really hasn't done a great deal of relevant things on the field in the last several years even with all of these illegal benefits happening. ?? This new allegation starts in 2002 (and probably before). So that's 3 BCS bowls in the period.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 11:59 AM) Here's the issue though...how long has it been since Miami has been a major, relevant power in college athletics? 2 NC championship games in 2002 and 2003 and a BCS bowl in 2004. I'd say that's still pretty relevant.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 11:28 AM) Even if you had some magic button to push that could eliminate all the shadiness, its still not going to make teams outside of the 10-20 top ones automatically contenders for championships. They simply dont have the facilities nor the actual location to pull in the top talent. You can clearly trace where the top college programs are by looking at the areas where more of the top recruits are from. But those are things the NCAA can't control. This you can. I have to believe that if Miami gets the death penalty here every other program will clean house of this kind of activity. Currently it's worth it to skirt the rule because the penalties don't prevent the school from competing at a high level or from raking in tons of money. They need to start hitting the schools hard, regardless of their history.

I just read the Yahoo! stories. I dunno how Miami doesn't escape the "death penalty" punishment. The guy was known by everyone at the school, even the President. He wasn't hiding at all. Everyone there knew what was going on, for years and years. Despicable.

Official 2011-2012 NCAA Football Thread
I hope Miami gets thrown the book, regardless of what they did/didn't know. It's about time the NCAA starts holding schools accountable for the people they bring into the school. I get it, they're kids being offered money, cars, women, etc. That's a hard temptation. But you know what, the players getting these types of perks are players that'll be able to get that stuff if they just wait 2-3 years for the pros. College football has long been a broken system where you only have about 10 teams with an actual shot at the title. This behind the scenes stuff with boosters just kills any legitimacy in the sport.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 10:04 AM) It's certainly ok for a conservative politician in office to do this. Unfortunately it would be unacceptable and an outrage for President Obama to call on Americans to join him at Meadowland stadium to pray to Allah. I wouldn't have a problem with it from a religious standpoint. I don't care if the President or some member of Congress is religious. I choose not to ignore the fact that religion is important to the vast majority of the country, despite what the small minority thinks. Now, the fact that he said he wasn't Muslim but would then call for people to join him to pray to Allah...the fact that he lied i might have a problem with.

I should say the antenna doesn't really matter assuming you have an open spot to put it in. Having an amplified one might help if you're sticking it in your attic or your basement....somewhere where the signal could get blocked. So it also partly depends on your set up.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 16, 2011 -> 05:59 PM) Any good HDTV antennas you could recommend? The amplified RCA one I have doesn't pick up CBS at all. Yeah don't waste your money on any special antenna. I have like an 80 dollar sony one i bought years ago for one tv and i have an old set of rabbit ears from the 80's or 90's (or older) for my other tv. Both work about the same. Where do you live? That's probably the problem. If you're anywhere close to downtown CBS' signal sucks. I'm out in La Grange and have a direct shot to the antenna. But when I lived in the city I never got CBS over the air.

That alone with create so many opportunities for Watford and Hulls. Yeah, well, Jereme Richmond was supposed to be a stud player too. Things don't always pan out.

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Aug 16, 2011 -> 04:01 PM) Zeller ended up being #10 in RSCI. I thought Leonard dropped big time after his senior year? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else. Either way, I won't be surprised if Zeller is only here for 2 years. I though he got up to the 30's somewhere. Regardless, at that point unless you're the absolute cream of the crop the 5-50 players are essentially the same. They have the chance to be special, but it's not a guarantee. And as I like to keep reminding my Indiana friends, keep your expectations in check. His brother was supposed to be this all time great college player too, and it took him what, 3 years and he's still not some consensus All-NBA lock? Translating your game from high school to college is incredibly difficult.

Terrible might be an exaggeration, but I didn't find it enjoyable. Putting aside the silly accent issue, it just wasn't well-written. It's a movie that's difficult because you know the ending (he doesn't succeed), but it lacked any sort of suspense or momentum to get you there. The entire thing was just "meh" with the added distraction of Tom Cruise with an eye patch.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 16, 2011 -> 03:38 PM) Zeller is more of an offensive threat right? While Leonard is more of a defensive players/dunker? I heard he had a good summer on the USA team. I'm hoping Amir Williams can body up both. Sounds like Zeller is like his brother - more spot up shooter type with some decent post moves. Leonard I think is just gonna be a bull that wants to destroy you. From what i've read he did have a good summer and by the end of the u19 trip he was one of the better (top 5) players. We'll see. He's the key to the entire Illini season so.....no pressure!

QUOTE (farmteam @ Aug 16, 2011 -> 02:44 PM) Oh yeah, the 6th banner thing was obviously in jest. Crean will most definitely get 2-3 more years, because of Zeller this year, and banner recruiting class coming the year after. This should definitely be the best year of his tenure so far. For the past few years, there have been people playing who shouldn't have been...this will be the first year that there will probably be people who should be playing but won't be able to. I don't think Zeller will be some massive savior (frankly, he was more that in the sense that news of his commit was the "We're coming back" catalyst, and directly led to a few more recruits). But he's going to be the most talented player on the roster, and he's a big, which is something we desperately need. He's more of a 4, but he might be forced into the 5 sometimes. Hopefully, Watford and Elston will be able to go out to the 3 more, instead of having to play the 4/5. I'm also excited for Abell, and to see if he's actually a point guard. A big point who can drive? That's exactly what Crean's offense needs. Well, that and to not stand around holding the ball for ten seconds at a time. That happens way too often. Apparently Sheehey and Oladipo have really improved, too. If Dipo can learn to become at least a decent shooter, he could be All Big Ten. He can get to the hoop with the best of them, and he's freakishly athletic. Also, he's probably our best defender. Sheehey is also really athletic, and the same goes for him if he could learn to shoot...but he crashes the boards less than Dipo. But that dunk Sheehey had against Iowa last year? WOW. Overall, I'm thinking it's going to be roughly .500 overall, and maybe like 6-10 (or are we up to an 18 game schedule now? In that case, 7-11) or 7-9. Better than the 3-15 of last year, anyway. I'm excited for the Zeller v. Leonard battles. Both guys ranked about the same coming out of HS, both pretty raw, but clearly talented.
