  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 7, 2010 -> 10:22 AM) RS interviews Obama. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/17390/209395 Kind of like the Dems and Obama with the stimulus bill. "Oh yeah, we invited them to a meeting. We aren't going to incorporate anything they want, but they can sit in on the meeting. That's bi-partisan action right there." GMAB this is a GOP only tactic. That's Washington politics.
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) Just because people didn't realize Tom Brady wasn't going to be this good doesn't mean you can suddenly discredit the Patriots because of that...he is still f***ing good. They also had Matt Cassel put up a QB rating of almost 90 for them, and he was a 7th round pick. They brought in Moss and Welker because they knew they'd be good...who cares if they didn't draft and develop them? They also have Brandon Tate and Julian Edelman who they can go to in a pinch, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski as tight ends (and Hernandez is more of a TE/WR hybrid), and BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead, who have been pretty great for them. Does it matter that they are run by a coach who used to be a defensive coordinator but have a young and inconsistent defense while having a monstrosity of an offense? I don't think it does. It's not like Belichick is completely guessing on the guys he brings in to lead his offenses and he's gotten lucky like 5 times. I would say after spending 40 years in the game, he knows what it takes to have a successful offense. Fackin' Danny Woodhead is a GAWD!
  3. if you guys like Mad Men/Breaking Bad, I highly recommend Rubicon. The 4-5 episodes are a slow build, but the payoff has been pretty fantastic. Last nights episode (number 11 I believe) was season one Breaking Bad good.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) He was targeting a specific student at the university. He called him "Satan's representative on the student assembly". Regardless of the legality, he was still personally attacking a student at U of M. Why should that behavior be acceptable on campus? What sort of "exchange of ideas" (or similar verbiage often cited for bringing in controversial people) does that foster? How is it at all comparable, even remotely, to a prominent foreign head of state known for spouting anti-Israel/anti-semitic rhetoric but who doesn't stalk and harass students at that very university? Without more it's simply this guy using a blog to spout his opinions. Who cares if it's directed at one person or not? You think an environmental activist that wrote scathing blog posts about a particular person at the school and then "protested" at his house would be banned from the university? I doubt it. Whether this guy is wacko is beside the point. He's speaking his mind. Educational institutions are supposed to foster all sorts of speech, both positive and negative (think about civil rights speakers, anti-war speakers, the nut job professor in Colorado that said we deserved 9/11). So, you're picking the opinions of the extreme fringe to say that our society as a whole promotes and accepts hateful actions towards the gay community? And I still think you can be against something without being hateful about it. I'm against people getting money from the government for doing nothing. Doesn't mean I actively support hateful acts towards them. And I think you're misguided a bit. I think the vast majority of the country doesn't care. If they did, popular TV shows wouldn't be successful with gay characters, people like Ellen wouldn't have successful careers, and frankly, if events like this kids suicide were to happen there'd be little to no reaction to it because the majority of people wouldn't care. I don't think that's the case at all. For some reason you're taking my comments to mean that I don't think ANY anti-gay thoughts are out there. That's just not true.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 11:40 AM) Harassment of an individual student at the university is not the same as inviting a head of state with crazy ideas. If this guy was banned at the university simply for ranting against gays, the comparison would make more sense. edit: For the social reality, the fact that we even have discussions like Prop 8 and DADT and "should gays be allowed to adopt" discussions says enough, and that's without a good chunk of religious organizations railing about how evil and sinful homosexuality is. Was it at the university? I thought he was going after the guy on his blog? The story says he "protested" outside of his house, but so what? I'm sure he was doing it in a legal way (or it would have been reported). And I don't buy that being opposed to something automatically means you support and accept hateful actions.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 10:19 AM) It's still very socially acceptable and even preferable to hate, mock, demean and demonize gays in this country in 2010. Yes, the situations are completely comparable. Tell me more. Except that it's clearly not anymore given people’s reactions to this and other stories. It still happens, sure, but our society is pretty quick to denounce it. And how are they not comparable? It's banning someone from a university based on opinions. In one situation it's allowed, in another it's not. Also, your condescending response really added to the discussion. Thanks.
  7. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 09:22 AM) http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/michigan...from.U-M.campus Again, my point wasn't that this doesn't happen or that it's not a problem that needs to be addressed. My point was that using one tragedy as an example of what every gay person in the country experiences is ridiculous. It's 2010, not 1950. And really, that story just makes me sad for U of M. Educational institutions are supposed to promote free speech and open discussion, regardless of the message. Negative as it may be, that's his opinion. Interesting that colleges choose to welcome (with open arms) people like Ahmadinejad but deny this guy access to the school. So, eradicate the Jews (and that whole Holocaust thing didn't happen) - acceptable; disagree with homosexuality - not acceptable. Got it.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) Why the need for the straw man here? What was pointed out, correctly, is that they tend to have higher occurances of these things. No one is saying its not true of anyone else, other than you. This is the kind of s*** that ruins any reasonable discussion. I think it's ridiculous to point to these unfortunate events as a microcosm of something bigger. My point is that homosexuals are not the only "minority" that gets teased/ridiculed/outcasted to the point where the begin to suffer from issues like depression which may lead to suicide. To say that this one sad event is what it means to be gay in the United States equally "ruins" reasonable discussion on the issue.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 09:04 AM) That you're harassed pretty much your entire life and it leads to suicide, depression, drug use, etc. Because homosexuals are the only ones that fit that description.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 08:33 AM) What it means to be homosexual in America. That you commit suicide when your privacy gets violated?
  11. The Big Lebowski
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 24, 2010 -> 02:24 PM) 1. Rex said nothing like that, neither did I. He said THIS SPECIFIC PERSON claims to be a Tea Partier. 2. This particlar Tea Partier, apparently, is racist. So can we please drop the hyperbole? It was a joke. But it's not like SS linked the article just to prove there's a racist candidate out there.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 24, 2010 -> 12:45 PM) I honestly hadn't heard about that - what's the deal? http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/09/24...avesty-justice/
  14. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 24, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) I will say that a google search on him shows a website where he claims to be a founding member of the White Plains Tea Party and he is a member of it according to Facebook. Thus proving that all tea partiers are racist! Man, you do it EVERY time. Amazing.
  15. I heard Parks and Rec got a lot better starting with season 2. I was very bored with the first half of season one so I dropped it. HIMYM sucks. It's the same 3 jokes over and over and over and over and over again. Barney says something *laugh track* about sex *Laugh track*. Ted *laugh track* gives him a look *laugh track* and complains about not finding the one *laugh track*. Lilly and Marshall *laugh track* do something lame and have a serious moment. Robin complains and whines *laugh track*. More of Barney *laugh track* saying something about banging *laugh track* some chick *laugh track*. Ugh, so old and overdone.
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) Sure, if you ignore stats and reality. You can chop off a few guys like Oden, Marc Gasol, Mohammed who we know are not as valuable, at least right now, but that was quite the sweeping, inaccurate statement. Joakim might be a top 10 center in the league. And I love how the entire argument spawns from the possibility of acquiring Carmelo f***ing Anthony while only adding Deng and a pick or two. Deng has NEGATIVE value. But who cares? Why nab the 26-year old arguably top 10 player and easily top 5 scorer in the league to pair with the up-and-coming Derrick Rose and start legitimate NBA Championship discussion? Who wants to do THAT? Of course, the Bulls are going to screw this up, and stupidly hold onto Noah, and then sign him for way too much. (How can you not if you refuse to trade him for CARMELO ANTHONY!?) And then repeat the cycle the Bulls have been on since Jordan left and overpay undeserving players and refuse the luxury tax. HOORAY! Meh, I don't care about PER numbers. They're skewed to offensive stats and they don't take into consideration intangibles. Noah is the most energetic guy in the league. He's not a me-first kind of guy. He fits perfectly with the team as-is. He's Rodman of this Bulls team - tons of rebounds, can give you the garbage buckets, a defensive presence, hustle, heart, and drive, etc. (and I used to hate him with a passion, but the Celtics series and all of last year forever changed my opinion of him). And, in the east i'd prefer to have a top 3 front court instead of a top 3 back court. Denver had a better pg in Billups and reached the conference finals once in 3 years. But to each his own I guess.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 09:07 AM) I've turned around and began to really like Noah the last 2 seasons, especially with his development as a player and the energy he brings. However, I dont buy that the guy is worth that much money, I'd rather get a Melo for him while we can instead of signing him and turning him into a contract albatross and eventually an expiring contract that we cannot wait to get rid of. This is the Bulls. They have the money to spend, so spend it. Noah is one of the top 5 centers in the league and he's entering his what, 4th year? Young, skilled, energetic and all about the team. I dunno if there's any player in the league like him, let alone a center. Plus, he's becoming a fan favorite. I say sign him for what he wants and make him happy.
  18. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 08:34 PM) Modern Family, still awesome. "No Jay, we met at an orgy..... Kidding!" Also, the Colombian mom. Wow. So hot.
  19. Anyone buy Civ 5? So far so good. I like some of the tweaks they made from Civ IV. But there seems to be a lot of graphical issues, at least with my set up.
  20. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) I just tried the geo ip locater they used. I put in an IP that I know originates in Springfield IL, the tool claimed the IP originated in Rockford. Then used another GEO IP locator, this same IP was shown as originating in Chicago, IL. Tried another one, and it got it right, Springfield IL. So basically, they're more than likely full of it.
  21. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 11:11 AM) So you think a blogger in Brooklyn planned to have a random Republican Senator framed by planting someone to hack a wifi connection in Atlanta to make a comment on his blog post? Doubt it. And this frame job wouldn't make sense. If he really wanted to punish someone, it would be one of the Republican Senate candidates running for reelection, Chambliss is not up for reelection in November, as far as I'm aware. To his credit, what little it deserves, Senator Chambliss seems to be taking this decision extremely seriously. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2010/0...estigating.html Seems a bit odd that someone would take the time to investigate the source of a comment like that. Comment sections on blogs and websites have these types of things ALL the time. I seriously doubt he just randomly decided to check the source of that comment.
  22. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 11:08 AM) Thought Mother showed it may have a direction this year. That show became so awful the last couple of seasons, like Friends after Ross/Rachel got together. Everyone just became the same running gag over and over again (and the laugh track is so brutal). But alas, I still watch...
  23. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Sep 15, 2010 -> 11:42 PM) I'm jumping in the middle here without a lot of knowledge. What is the NCAA accusing Pearl/Tennessee of right now? What have they done for them to come down hard? Do we have enough info at this point? I know he misled the NCAA, but I don't have a clue what the allegations are. As far as Illinois, I know this won't be popular here, but Pearl did nothing to the Illini program. He made an accusation that couldn't be proven. That doesn't mean it wasn't true. But the NCAA decided to look around while the door was open. Illinois got busted for what they found then. If they weren't doing s***, there wouldn't have been a problem. That's akin to a drug dealer blaming the cops for finding obvious laws being broken when serving a warrant for something else. Don't blame the cops because stuff was going on and they got inside. He made up s*** to get NCAA sniffing into the Illinois program, all because he lost out on Thomas. The result was the NCAA finding zero evidence of any wrongdoing with Thomas, but some other bulls*** violation that resulted in a one year ban, basically ruining the momentum the program was building right after the Flying Illini.
  24. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 06:50 AM) she had a point in response to the people who are saying she was dressed inappropriately, saying the button down shirt and jeans she had was not inappropriate. Its not like she went out there in a thong bikini, really all she did was not hide the fact that she has a nice ass. http://deadspin.com/5636603/lets-talk-abou...nd-the-sideline What other "reporter" dresses like this?
  25. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 15, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) That's intentional hyperbole and wasn't directed at anyone on SoxTalk. I'm sorry if you can't see why "I don't want to say she was asking for it, but..." followed by rationale for why she was "asking" to be sexually harassed by having the gall to be an attractive female sports reporter is incredibly sexist. And why making jokes about her and objectifying her as Rush did is sexist. Please note that I called your statement sexist. Seriously though, I saw this comment elsewhere and thought it's spot on Really? That's all she is? An attractive female sports reporter? She did nothing to cause the attention she was getting? Nothing at all? You've seen her pictures right? She's known as the superbowl reporter for a reason. I said the comments and actions were inappropriate, but not surprising. I'm sorry if you can't see the reality of the situation. But preach on brother.
