QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 31, 2016 -> 03:21 PM) If they knew there was nothing on there (or that the FBI had already seen everything on there) and they wanted to quietly get it over with knowing that the FBI was going to leak the warrant request and start a s***-show similar to this one, they probably would have done that, yeah. Maybe, but i'm sure there's a ton of personal stuff they wouldn't want to see the light of day.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 31, 2016 -> 03:09 PM) He could easily have chosen not to release that really vague but innuendo-laden letter while knowing precisely nothing beyond "Huma shared her husband's laptop, so there's some emails on it" a little less than two weeks before the election. Ultimately, even if this was "CYA" it's blown up in his face spectacularly as there's no way he continues on if/when Clinton wins. I would have had private convos with people. If that got leaked at least it doesn't come back on him. And if in 6 months they find some real dirt there, he can say that he notified the appropriate people before the election to show that not making it public wasn't politically motivated.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2016 -> 03:07 PM) I could certainly understand stating something, but they didn't even apply for a search warrant until after the letter was sent, and they could have also just asked the owner of the emails for access to them and she'd probably have granted it. "Ma'am, can you please let us look at your laptop 10 days before election day so that we can see if your boss, a presidential candidate, screwed up more than we previously thought?" "oh sure!" No way she lets them do that without a court order.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 29, 2016 -> 09:30 PM) Two good performances against two of the top teams in the east. Pretty impressive. Both had come off back to backs and Boston was missing 2/5th's of their starting line up, so.... it's early. HOWEVA, they are moving the ball well, shooting well and the defense isn't atrocious. Basically, they're fun to watch again. Now keep it up!
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 28, 2016 -> 01:45 PM) I also take back what I said of being understanding of FBI's predicament as the posting of a vague letter and then the numerous leaks of clarification is white sox level execution. I thought the same thing. Why on earth reopen this if there's no substance to it.
-
QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 28, 2016 -> 12:49 PM) That's not at all what the letter says. If they were reopening the investigation they would've said that. Semantics I suppose, but they're looking into it: “I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation."
-
New information emerges, FBI reopens investigation of Clinton on her emails. Wonder if this makes people question their decision to vote for her or is everyone by this point solidly in one camp or the other.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 28, 2016 -> 02:02 AM) I only watched bits of the first and then the second half but I was at the bar. Was Niko slotting up at 3 when Butler sat? Has Hoiberg commented on where Snell's minutes are going? Is it going to be Mirotic/McDermott or more three guard sets. They're going to MCW, the guy that took Snell's spot on the roster Interesting that Felecio took Portis' minutes and Valentine didn't play at all last night. I was happy about the rebounding. I was happy with Niko. I was happy about Rondo's play (great facilitator). Lopez is better than I thought he would be (honestly GarPax should get exec of the year honorable mention just for the Rose trade. That was brilliant). And I like that Wade, Rondo and Butler are ok together already. It's a work in progress and they're still feeling each other out, but they didn't look AWFUL like I expected. Shooting is going to be an issue (39% last night against a team missing 2 of it's 5 starters). But at least they hit some 3's. Wade had 4 last night which is 3 short of his total for the entire year last year.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 10:09 AM) Basketball begins tonight!! Bulls vs. Celtics. Will take a month or so to see how the guys are geling, etc., but I hope this team is fun to watch. I don't have any delusional expectations, I'm thinking 4 or 5 seed at best, 9 or 10 seed at worse. Realistically, I think we should be a playoff team. The real interesting part will come in the off-season to see where they pivot from there. I hope they prove me wrong and do better though. I hope they're either weirdly competitive and lose in the 2nd round, or this ends up being a disaster, Wade plays about 20 games, Rondo becomes a prima donna, the whole thing blows up next year and they get a lottery pick. Also have to root for sacramento to be decent so we can get that pick.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 01:33 PM) It was the fake numbers thing at the Phoenix VA if I recall. But the words "VA scandal" are kinda synonymous with the VA sucking now. It started there, and then some digging found that it was nationwide. And it should still be considered a scandal because whistle blowers are coming out 2 years later saying the numbers are still cooked and wait times aren't getting any better. To me Obama deserves major blame for that (which he does not get) because he took an active role to fix the problem but hasn't done any follow-up. He basically canned the top guy, replaced him, had the new guy replace a bunch of underlings but the results and fake numbers are still taking place. Nothing was fixed. -
QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 09:49 AM) I don't know that Oliver is necessarily trying to be all that funny, he's just adding levity to keep his audience interested while he talks about boring (but important) s*** like the prison system, or local newspapers covering state legislatures, or corrupt pharmaceutical laws. I think most of the deep topics are about pointing out absurdities, which is what TDS under Steward was (at least when it was good).

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 11:43 AM) I don't know how whatever the "VA scandal" is supposed to have been became a political issue. (well ok, actually I do, but not the point). It's always had long wait times and been a pretty miserable experience, basically since Vietnam. I don't even know how you fix that actually. It was more the cover-up/fake reporting numbers at all levels of the department, basically across the nation, that was the issue. That Vets get s***ty/slow service from a government run healthcare institution isn't new or surprising. I deal with Medicare and the VA a decent amount through my work (dead/injured old people/vets) and both entities are absolutely awful to deal with. I loathe the day that I actually have to deal with Medicare for my own healthcare. -
QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 12:32 PM) There's a larger phenomenon here I think, and people like Moore are just one part of it. The way that everything is all broken up and self-segregated in media, groups of people end up just talking to themselves, and they can't get anyone else to pay attention to them. I read a few things in the past few months where the conservative pundit class is starting to see the drawbacks of their strategy. They've been tremendously successful at creating their own media and pushing the bias angle that they've been able to influence the way the rest of the media covers stories for a while, but it's starting to have its limits. Everyone else sees Fox and other places on the internet like it are SO openly and unapologetically partisan that everyone who's not already a committed Republican basically ignores them. They start to notice that they have stories that instantly go viral and Fox News spends most of the day talking about the latest scandal, but only conservatives talk about it, and every other media outlet ignores it as partisan spin. It doesn't matter if it was a legitimate scandal or not, that's not how people perceive it. It works in reverse too. Other stories don't get into conservative media. I don't watch Fox News, so keep that in mind when I say this, but I do think the "they're just the GOP/Conservative mouthpiece organization" is not really true as much as it was 5-6 years ago. Two people I randomly see through viral videos online, like O'Reilly and Megyn Kelly, are far from the conservative cheerleaders like Hannity. Both have gone after Trump repeatedly (Kelly especially). Beck, though not with the network now, is totally against Trump and the current GOP. Yes, they're all obviously much more conservative than their MSNBC counter-parts, but they're all not the extreme right version of conservatism either (like Hannity). You don't really get exposure to that though when you employ the blowhard extremists like Hannity who say the most outlandish things. So I agree, that's on them for the "monster" they created.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 11:27 AM) Bush got blamed for those because those were POLICY decisions, which he WAS personally responsible for. Not administrative issues. The president really doesn't even have time to micromanage the DoD. Some were policy decisions, others went far beyond and he was blamed for the "culture" that was tolerated, which was and is still bulls***. You're right, they don't have the time to micromanage, so they appoint people that they believe is the best person for the job. And when those people fail to run their departments, it reflects on the person who appointed them in the first place. -

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 11:26 AM) 1. The Obama administration doesn't manage the CA Guard, California manages the CA Guard. 2. The DoD manages itself administratively most of the time, even moreso than most government agencies because it's so big. It has its own internal bureaucracy. That's how they discovered the issue of fraudulent bonuses in the first place. The result was at least one court martial (to my knowledge) and a prison sentence. 3. The DoD's budget (which was the issue here) comes from the NDAA every year, which is authorized by Congress. They hadn't yet, for whatever reason. It's really lazy to just default to "Obama f***ed up." When it got high-level attention they took action. Yet you have the Secretary taking unilateral action to "fix" the problem. It's not an excuse that it's up to Congress if ultimately someone can step forward and say, this is a bulls*** policy, we're going to stop. It's lazy to blame any President for a variety of executive/management blunders that happen 40 people down the line, I agree. Yet we do it anyway, with every President, except Obama gets a pass on it most of the time and I don't know why. The VA is STILL having major problems with wait times, 2 years after the scandal was "addressed." -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 11:18 AM) "thing gets attention, is immediately fixed" seems like a pretty good response to me? Apparently some in Congress had been trying to do something, but forgiving these accidental payments had to be considered "new spending" per current House rules and thus offset by cuts in other programs, sot that was the sticking point. Immediately fixed seems like a stretch. The ABC article makes it seem like people were b****ing for 2 years. I don't get the puppy gloves when it comes to Obama. If this were Bush circa 2005 he would have been blamed personally much like he was for the DoD's policies in Iraq/Afghanistan. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 08:56 AM) Michael Moore's new documentary does a better job than her own campaign of making the case for Clinton. "Moore in Trumpland" is a very worthwhile documentary watch (it's really just him doing a one man performance in rural Ohio in a heavily white GOP rural district), and makes one feel a bit better about the future of the country for the first time in months. Quite clever. I think it was John Oliver that made the point - who is that movie directed to? What fan of Michael Moore needs to be convinced that Trump is a terrible choice for President?

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 08:45 AM) Cleveland: We want a championship. We've suffered too long. Devil: Okay. I can get you one in 2016, you have to host the Republicans. That's my price. Cleveland: Okay, we can live with that. Devil: The Republicans will be nominating Donald Trump. Cleveland: We want 2 championships. Lol, that's great.

Just like the VA scandal, which still continues without much coverage, Obama gets yet another pass on some terrible management/policies when it comes to our vets. How did no one in his administration raise a hand and say this is bulls*** and a terrible idea? -
OKC's system was awful. It was basically let either Durant or Westbrook ISO for 20 seconds. Durant has to learn that he doesn't have to play that way anymore. He needs to move around without the ball and he'll still get his shots. It's going to take some time, but they'll get it eventually. They have a major problem with a lack of size though. They can't rebound. If they don't make a ton of threes, they'll lose. You take the odds that they will over an 82 game season. But a stretch of 3-4 games is different, as Cleveland showed last year.

Warriors are in a rough 0-4 stretch.
