Pretty tough to win on the road with one shot per possession.

60-56 wisky is my prediction. It'll be a close game since neither team is an offensive juggernaut.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) Great article in Slate yesterday, talked about how the new "populism" is essentially being for and against every issue at the same time. http://www.slate.com/id/2243797/ I disagree with a lot of that. I don't think that the majority of Americans are idiots (for watching Idol over Beck for example), and I don't think they are for/against the very same issue. The problem is that government and government's mouthpiece, the media, have taken MAJOR issues and dumbed them down to two word phrases. He's arguing we're all for healthcare reform (true) but against specific policies (true) as if that doesn't make sense. Well of course it does! The idea that we can reform the system for the better is something we want, but the proposals set forth weren't good ones to a lot of people. Same with the other issues he raises: Because he said it was needed at that very second otherwise we'd all be in bread lines, but that didn't happen, we've slowly grown, and 90% of the money hasn't been spent yet. So yes, most people have changed their tune on that issue because we woke up and found out, "f***! that's a lot of money to spend!" Two different issues I think. Too much regulation on small businesses isn't the same issue as regulating the financial industry. Not all of us agree with that first part. Again, people can be in favor/oppose major issues without agreeing on specific parts of it. I DO agree though with his point that the popular candidate is one that speaks out of both sides of his/her mouth. But that's not exactly a new thing in politics.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 08:46 PM) I'm not saying he's an all time great, but Turner is doing things at the college level that only some all time greats have done. Doesnt mean he will be, but he's a much better player than those guys mentioned above. I think Turner is an impressive player, and I think he's a lock to be a really good NBA guy (with unlimited potential), but a 20/10/5 season isn't as good as Duncan's (nearly 5 more boards a game) or Magic's (nearly 3-4 more assists) IMO. There's an argument in there also about the way the game is played (much more offensively nowadays), but whatever. Turner is a stud, no argument there.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 11:16 AM) I think you meant Adam Morrison, but I don't understand the Marvin Williams inclusion. He averaged 11.3 points, 6.7 rpg in his only collegiate season. He averages 12.1 ppg and 5.4 rpg in the NBA where he has to find shots from Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford, and Josh Smith. Oops, lol, I read that thing straight from NBA.com's draft history page too. He hadn't dominated college, but he was being talked about like he was the next LeBron. I'm just saying there's a difference between dominating college (or having the hype of dominating as a freshman prospect) and dominating in the NBA. Check out all the really solid players in the last 10 draft years that went in the lottery. There's only a handful of all time greats in there.

Super Bowl XLIV
(1) We're talking about comparable QB's here, not a Trent Dilfer versus Marino situation. But whatever. I forgot in football the goal isn't to win a Superbowl. (2) This is an argument about not claiming a guy with one superbowl ring and a .500 playoff record is the greatest of all time. GMAFB.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) Pippen was arguably HOF and top 50 of all time. I just think its premature to suggest that Turner is a better leader or star than Pippen, considering Turner hasnt played a single NBA game. If Turner turns out to be as good as Pippen hed have an amazing career. Just seems odd to already be suggesting hes better. Especially since there are SO many college stars that dominate at the college level, but can't do crap in the NBA: Adam Morrison, Marvin Williams, Andrew Bogut, etc...

Super Bowl XLIV
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) I'd say Brady's supporting cast greatly outweighs Peyton's. This is just dumb. So Peyton has on won one Super Bowl? He routinely takes teams that are probably .500 with another QB and wins 12 games. The first point is irrelevant. You play with what you're given. We're not talking about whether or not Manning is a great QB, he clearly is. But to say he is, without question, the best QB of his generation (let alone ever) is silly. Guys like Montana didn't LOSE Superbowls (or deep playoff runs) with their play. Manning has. Again, he's clearly a GREAT QB, but I dunno how you can claim he's better than Brady at this point. 3 rings, 4 superbowls. 1 ring, 2 superbowls. Not comparable.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Feb 7, 2010 -> 03:40 PM) I don't think Illinois is close to that. They beat Michigan State in a close game without their best player. They don't win if Lucas plays. It's a shame Illinois gets a lucky tournament boost because they were a bubble team that now is more solidly in. There's a solid chance Illinois doesn't win more than 2 games the rest of the way. They're going to be big dogs in 3 of their 4 road games and small dogs hosting Ohio State and Wisconsin. They probably win 3 more, but their RPI is only 72 after beating MSU. The schedule boost from this tough stretch will make that go up, but this is not a borderline top 25 team by any stretch of the imagination. Disagree here. I'm not convinced Lucas makes that game any different. Maybe less turnovers, but the game wasn't won/lost because of a lack of offensive efficiency. Both teams executed the entire game. It just came down to Illinois hitting big shots at the end. I DO think this team is a borderline top 25 team. They're easily 3-4 games better than the record indicates, even if you throw out the Clemson win. They've been soundly beaten twice this season (Missouri, 2nd half of MSU), the rest of their losses are from poor 2nd half play. That's what happens when you rely heavily on 3 freshman and 3 juniors. This is the 2nd youngest team in the conference (behind Indiana) and they're still tied for 2nd, within a game of first. No need to talk about it though. They clearly have the schedule to prove whether or not they belong.

Super Bowl XLIV
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 03:05 AM) ZOMG, MANNING MADE A POOR PASS. Manning is still easily the greatest QB of this generation, and, unless you want to argue Elway, Young, or Favre, one of the top 2 QBs of all-time (with Marino being the other...BUT HE NEVER WON A SUPER BOWL SO HE MUST f***ING SUCK god I hate that f***ing argument) Pssh, easily the greatest my ass. I hate Brady, but I'll take the guy with 3 rings in 4 tries versus a guy that consistently loses in the playoffs, despite nearly always having a first round bye and home field advantage. He's basically Favre, a guy that you want because he's a winner and makes nobodies into somebodies. But he's not the greatest because he didn't win when he had the opportunities to.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 07:32 AM) Do you not read the financial thread? Aside from one policy (pay control for TARP firm executives), you'll find I am critical of Obama's and the Dems' policies more often than not. Further, you'll find I am distinctly to the right of center on any number of other topics, including 2A, 10A, affirmative action, business policy generally, protection of religious speech and the whole PC thing, Afghanistan, a whole swath of foreign policy (right of center but more Bush I than Bush II), the drive away from income-based taxes to more use-based taxes, the federal budget and deficits, health care (though I really prefer neither's policies at the moment), some education policy, public safety and the role of law enforcement, and the power of targeted tax cuts. I could go on with others, but you get the point. And until about 2001, I voted for far more Republicans for office than Democrats. It wasn't until the GOP decided to abandon financial restraint and the protection of individual freedoms - once the cornerstones of that party - that I was forced to vote more often for Dems. Its not because I liek the Dems, its because they are currently the lesser evil. +1

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 10:31 PM) Exactly what being homered means. It happens everywhere, but I just get frustrated when so many Illini fans seem to think they're the only ones who get s*** on by refs. For people like chimpy, palehose, and myself, just be happy you don't have to watch your teams play at Duke. Hell, Gani Lawal and D. Favors walked off the bus with 2 fouls on Thursday night at Cameron. Dukie V's lovefest for the ACC about made me puke in this game. It's a national game with about 90% people from the midwest or alums watching. We don't give 2 s***s about the greatness of rat face, scheyer, or whatever cock massaging crap he wants to say about them. Ditto with the Calipari love. I can't wait until that guy retires.

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 10:21 PM) The and-1 with a little over a minute left was comical. Then, the tie up under the hoop was called a foul all night. I wouldn't expect Illinois fans to ever admit they got the benefit of the doubt from refs though. College basketball just this year implemented the continuation rule, the goal being that guys shouldn't be able to grab a guy whose blown passed them just to stop them from scoring. If it's all a continuation it counts. That's exactly what happened. I think that one was pretty debatable, i'll grant you that, but it's a game at Illinois with Illinois making a run. Teams that go to the basket get the benefit of those calls in every game. I disagree on the tie up. Yeah he was grabbing arm/hands, but that's the way they let them play the whole game. A foul would have been a bail out call, he was going nowhere.

Great game. Great win. Awful rushing the court. But what are you going to do? Bunch of 18-22 year olds trying to get on tv. And gmafb on the refs. Michigan State is clearly the most physical of any team in the Big Ten. "Box out" means to check people out of the way. This was a physical game that I thought was called pretty well considering it's the Big Ten.

Jon Stewart on Bill O'Reilly
QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 11:07 AM) I remember that a few years ago. Didn't he go on some shot with Tucker Carlson and rip him? It was hilarious. Yeah that was a similiar speech. The one I'm referring to was a speech to writers or something in NY. But both had the same message.

Jon Stewart on Bill O'Reilly
I've enjoyed every one of their on-air meetings, be it on O'Reilly's show or The Daily Show. Here's my thing with Stewart. Years ago he was giving some sort of speech where he basically blasted cable news, and specifically fox news, and his reasoning wasn't just that they were backing a particular party, it was that they were dumbing down their audience with inappropriate/irrelevant issues/debates, and that really they were just wasting a great opportunity to be a mouthpiece for constructive good. Which made me laugh, because he's basically calling himself out. He's got a great gig. He can make politicians and famous people look like flip flopping morons. Yet in the same 20 min segment he can instantly become serious and make poignant points about any given issue, and thus is deemed a credible source of political conversation. To me that's completely unfair. I find it telling that during his interviews with O'Reilly, when O'Reilly questions why Stewart thinks the way he does, Stewart just starts joking around "man you have a reach like Ali! Screw the good point you just made, I'm gonna make a joke, cuz I'm just a comedian after all!"
