  1. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 09:06 AM) But you can do better at #3 overall. #3 Overall picks since 2000 2000 - Luis Montanez - SS - HS - Cubs - ML utility player 2001 - Dewon Brazelton - RHP - MTSU - TB - Marginal reliever 2002 - Christopher Gruler - RHP - HS - Reds - Never made it past A- 2003 - Kyle Sleeth - RHP - Wake Forest - Tigers - Never made it past AA 2004 - Phillip Humber - RHP - Rice - Mets - ML 5th starter 2005 - Jeff Clement - C - USC - Mariners - AAAA player 2006 - Evan Longoria - 3B - CSLB - TB - Perennial All-Star 2007 - Josh Vitters - 3B - HS - Cubs - Turbulent career, hitting .208 in AAA this season 2008 - Eric Hosmer - 1B - HS - Royals - Up and down, looks to be at least a ML regular going forward 2009 - Donovan Tate - CF - HS - Padres - Out of baseball 2010 - Manny Machado - SS - HS - Orioles - At least ML regular, probably perennial All-Star 2011 - Trevor Bauer - RHP - UCLA - Dbacks - In his third stint on a ML roster, though it likes he might stick this time 2012 - Mike Zunino - C - Florida - Mariners - ML regular 2013 - Jon Gray - RHP - Oklahoma - Rockies - On his way to a September call-up, career is still a ? Theres been a lot more swings and misses than home runs at number 3. If you can save some money and get a guy like Nola who most consider to have a #2 ceiling with a #5 floor and then go after someone that slips like Spencer Adams or perhaps grab Mitch Keller in the 3rd with an overslot deal.
  2. Tweet from Rodons aunt apparently, though it was interesting the pick range she included: Tonight's main #event is the #mlbDraft where our nephew @CarlosRodon16 is one of the top 3 picks!!!…
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 05:26 AM) Those comments are very telling. I totally agree with the PR moves. Fans getting fed up with it. Cubs fans should go to Iowa cuz it seems that's the only way those fans will see their prospects. Don't get why they don't bring em up like Houston is. May energize fan base. Houston is taking a lot of heat for pushing their prospects to sign extensions before they bring them up.
  4. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) So I'm kinda bored of talking about about the first round as nauseam, who is everybody's top 3 in the second round? I would love to see: 1.) AJ Reed 2.) Luke Weaver 3.) Michael Cederoth I like Weaver or possible Nick Howard as a guy that can become a starter at the next level. Ideally if you take a HS arm in the first you would want a college arm in the second and vice versa, that is unless someone like Davidson or Hill are still on the board.
  5. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) Did Kenny get a discount for Hawkins, Honel, Broadway, Borchard, Mitchell, et al? Can't remember. Mitchell, Broadway, Walker, Poreda, and McCullough were seen as overdrafts to go under the recommended slot. They were able to get Sale at a discount by promising that he would be on the ML roster by the end of that season. Beckham was the only one that was right at slot. Previous to 2005 they went overslot with Fields in 2004. Borchard was taken in Schuelers last draft in 2000.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) But how does that absolve KW from misallocating funds. He had $4 million for 1 month of Manny after the draft. When he was busted and disgusted, he was able to get Peavy and Rios during the season and after the draft. They claimed at the time this was money they "found". Was it money earmarked for draft picks they decidided against? We won't know that unless they come out and say it, but obviously there were funds available to go overslot if they chose. They didn't choose. When Borchard was there they spent big. Maybe that left a bad taste, but $4 million for one month of Manny was pretty sad. As a point of clarification, I didn't say the funds were misallocated, only that it was the way they chose to allocate funds at the time. KW was "all in" on the ML roster, they scaled back their amateur budgets to try and extend their window of contention by acquiring veteran players (that often backfired, but the intention was good). If he would have gotten another WS ring, it would have been worth it. But they knew the day was coming when a tear down and rebuild was going to have to happen with an aging and over priced roster, Hahn has managed to turn lemons into lemonade for the most part shedding excess salaries from the ML roster while acquiring young (mostly quality) cost controlled players to serve as the core of the team going forward while at the same time building the farm system through the draft and international FA.
  7. Interesting mock, not sure how reputable this site is: 1. Astros - SS Nick Gordon (Olympia High School) 2. Marlins - C Alex Jackson (Rancho Bernardo High School) 3. White Sox - LHP Brady Aiken (Cathedral Catholic High School) 4. Cubs - LHP Carlos Rodon (NC State) 5. Twins - RHP Tyler Kolek (Shepherd High School) 6. Mariners - LHP Sean Newcomb (Hartford) 7. Phillies - RHP Grant Holmes (Conway High School) 8. Rockies - RHP Aaron Nola (LSU) 9. Blue Jays - SS Trea Turner (NC State) 10. Mets - LHP Kyle Freeland (Evansville) http://beisbolsblog.blogspot.com/
  8. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 02:32 PM) No it was taking the cheapest player they could get signed and not have to deal with Boras type agents, payroll had nothing to do with it. Kenny was a terrible talent evaluator, when you cannot even call up a decent 4th OF because of injuries you know KW dropped the ball. Thank goodness for new slotted system or Sox would not be getting hardly anyone worth a dam. The reason they needed the cheapest players was because they had allocated resources to payroll instead of the draft and international FA. Hahn made an effort to free up money so that he can spend on amateur talent so that you do have someone to call up, KW's solution was to just re-sign DeWayne Wise. Totally agree that KW ran the system into ground, but after 2005 he went for it every year pushing payroll to the limits and neglecting to bring in adequate talent, they pretty much gave up internationally.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 02:10 PM) KW might want to check with Laumann and Hahn. They both pretty much said the Sox were taking a pitcher. In the article, Lauman says they are looking at 5 pitchers and one position player.
  10. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) I wish KW would go off into the sunset. His draft record overall is terrible, he is the last guy who should be a deciding voice on 2014 pick choice. His draft record is tied to him pushing the limits of the payroll every year and not having anything left over to spend on amateur talent and having to draft players that he could get at a discount.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) This core though to me is nowhere near the core they had in the early 90s with Thomas, Ventura, Guillen, One Dog, Raines, Cora, Karko, McDowell, Fernandez, Alvarez , Roberto Hernandez. Then they would sign rentals like Franco, DJ, Burks, even Tartabull was good his one season. Before he got ultra-conservate, even though that seemed to work out, Schueler did put up an impressive piece of work. Granted he started with a pretty nice core, but his additions, until he sent Black Jack packing, where usually really good. That was great. Ventura #10 overall 1988 Thomas #7 overall 1989 Guillen - Intl FA Johnson acquired via trade from the Cardinals for Jose DeLeon who was received for the White Sox to return rule V pick Bobby Bonilla Cora - acquired via trade from Padres Kark - #14 overall 1982 McDowell - #5 overall 1987 Fernandez - #4 overall 1990 Alvarez - Intl FA Hernandez #16 overall 1986 It took a decade of sucking to build that core.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) So, just after seeing this, what are people thinking odds are that the Jackson report is true? Odds are that it is true, but, it really doesn't mean anything. A lot of teams will negotiate with multiple players and have preliminary deals in place and will select the player/deal combination they like the best on draft night. So while Jackson may have the details of a deal ironed out, the Marlins are in no way a lock to draft him.
  13. It would be very Jeff Lunhow to take Jackson at #1 and give him the same underslot deal he had with the Marlins. Just sayin. He walks out with the consensus best HS position player and adds slot flexibility later in the draft. I feel Aiken is too much of a sure thing that it won't happen.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 11:39 AM) I don't understand how this could be a conclusion. The Sox would have been in on Abreu regardless. I really don't care Rios is gone, and the return was meh, but that is what a guy with Rios' reputation and contract bring. Besides, if A. Garcia didn't get hurt, where would he play? But, the Sox offered real money to Tanaka. If Rios meant they couldn't sign anyone else, I don't know how they could have bid on him. There was always going to be money for Abreu. There was no way to know what Abreu was going to sign for in October. The Sox got a deal on him, but he could have received something much closer to what Tanaka received and that would have kept the Sox out of the bidding. They cleared the payroll space that they needed to make a run at Tanaka and Abreu, and if not for some contractual shenanigans by the Yanks, I think they certainly could have pulled in both. If they would have, your rebuild is virtually over. You can't fault the plan, it didn't work, but they did every thing they could to get it to work.
  15. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 11:45 AM) Yet, when you look at it. When KW traded our "good" prospects for MLB proven talent, none of which has come back to bite us. There isn't a single prospect that we traded that I can say that dang we should of kept him. Sure, but when you look at some of the selections that were made in the draft, when the team clearly went for signability over talent, that contributed to a void of talent in the system. Just because all of the prospects that they selected failed, does not make it any better, only illustrates the problem more in depth.
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) If they drafted better . . . We can play this game, but the lack of talent in the Sox system meant they had to pay up. The draft under KW was a totally different animal though. The Sox did not pick BPA, they picked the BPA for the amount of money that we had left in the budget to spend in the draft. Cutting back salaries has allowed the team to be more aggressive in the draft going after top tier talent instead of guys they can sign on the cheap. I totally agree that if the Sox would have built there system they would not have been in that situation, but last years deals were paying for the sins of the past and now we have to move forward with a new approach instead of sinking back into what got us in trouble in the first place.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) If the Sox had kicked in more money . . . .....they wouldn't have been able to afford Abreu?
  18. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 08:21 AM) I think Hawkins had wite at the "young for his level and showing marked improvement." Seriously, I've NEVER seen so many people jump off a bandwagon so fast. I can't even see the argument -- underaged prospect struggles in midst of very aggressive promotion, immediately labelled bust. Repeats level, still young for it, shows substantial improvement, still a bust. NEVER? Really it is business as usual here as demonstrated by the people that giving up on Semien as a big leaguer after his limited exposure. I think people vastly underrate the amount of development that goes on, especially in the minors and expect highly rated prospects to dominate at every level. I would argue that if Hawkins was on the same promotion schedule as Buxton, he would still have been a top 50 prospect going into this season, but the aggressive promotion exposed some warts a more quickly.
  19. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) Just saw the tweets about Jackson and the Marlins. Absolutely boner time if that happens. Who are the tweets from? I haven't seen anything.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) That has to be the dream scenario for the White Sox. And for the Cubs and Twins as well.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 03:04 PM) If those are Law's words, well, I have backed Law a lot, but holy s***, way to go out on a limb. That as his "analysis" of the pick. Basically saying the Sox are taking pitching.
  22. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) So is Houston down to Aiken or Rodon only? There are also rumors of them getting a deal with Gordon on an underslot deal. But pretty much down to those three. Its possible, though not probable that the first two players off the board are position players followed by the big 3 pitching prospects. 1. Gordon 2. Jackson 3. Aiken/Kolek 4. Rodon 5. Kolek/Aiken
  23. Laws new mock is up: 1. Aiken 2. Rodon 3. Kolek - They have been connected to Kolek for a while. The Sox also have interest in Brady Aiken, maybe Carlos Rodon and Aaron Nola 4. Michael Conforto 5. Nick Gordon http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft/mock/...-Law-Mock-Draft
  24. QUOTE (HoosierSox @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) Being a Hoosier homer but I would love to see Kyle Schwarber fall to our 2nd round pick. He is a better prospect than Phegley was. He will bea ssolid major league catcher. Thats interesting, almost uniformly the talent evaluators are saying he won't be able to catch in pro ball and will have to move to 1B, but most have him pegged to come off the board in the 15-25 range of the first round as well.
  25. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 03:32 PM) That doesn't make any sense -- if they wanted to save money, all they'd need to do is draft underslot. Gives them flexibility to sign their first rounder, at least. It looks like they had another use of the money in mind: "Gregg will receive a $2.1MM pro-rated salary upon being called up, which means he’ll earn right around the same amount ($1.4MM) that the Marlins will now forego in draft bonus slot money, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com"
