QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 05:00 PM) How about to Mariners for Walker, Franklin and others? I think the Mariners packages would have to be Walker, Seager, Paxton, and then something like Tyler Marlette. Also could do a change of scenery swap of Beckham and Ackley in the deal.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) You only trade Chris Sale if you get someone who you think can be as good as Chris Sale. It doesn't need to be some one, it has to be a collective that will win you more games than you will win just by having Sale pitch every five days. I would think the price would be three ML ready prospects with upside plus a couple high upside guys.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 04:43 PM) I'm only shipping Sale to AZ if we're getting AT LEAST Eaton, Davidson, Bradley, and we give up Dunn or Keppinger as well. I think thats probably the starting point for the a deal. There are probably 5 teams that could give up what the Sox need to get back in value for Sale- the Cardinals, Rangers, Dbacks, Red Sox and possibly the Mariners.

Sox to Make Hard Push for Granderson
harfman77 replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 02:46 PM) You can put this thread to sleep now. Per MLBTR... "Granderson Seeking Four Years, $64MM By Steve Adams [December 5 at 2:42pm CST] Yesterday it was reported that talks between Curtis Granderson and the Mets have intensified, and the Mets are becoming increasingly optimistic about their chances to land him. The Red Sox reportedly haven't ruled him out. The Diamondbacks, though they strongly desire a corner outfield bat with some power, aren't likely to be able to afford him. We'll keep track of today's Granderson rumors here... Newsday's Marc Carig reports (via Twitter) that Granderson has been seeking a four-year deal worth $16MM annually. Earlier Updates A guaranteed fourth year is still up for debate in Granderson negotiations, tweets Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. In a second tweet, he adds that the Mets may have to go four years to land him but aren't resigned to that yet. Granderson's talks with the Mets are more advanced than they are with other teams, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Other teams remain in the mix, however. Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald tweets that the Red Sox are more interested in right-handed outfield bats to complement Jackie Bradley Jr., so they don't see Granderson as a great fit" ALRIGHTY THEN! Really thought the Red Sox would be all over Choo this offseason and play him with Bradley and Victorino in the OF. -
Sox to Make Hard Push for Granderson
harfman77 replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Recent Sox 2nd rounders: Tyler Danish Chris Beck Erik Johnson Jake Petricka Trayce Thompson Comp Round Picks near the second round Keon Barnum Josh Phegley I am not sure I would give up any of those players and take back Granderson and the $45-$60M it will take to sign him. If the Sox were an OF bat short from contending, it would be worth the move, but if you are rebuilding it doesn't make a lot of sense to take on that type of payroll obligation and give up young talent for the sake of losing 75 games instead of 80 games. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:46 AM) Who did you have in mind for the 25th roster spot? For all we know, this move prevents the White Sox from using Marcus Semien as a utility infielder because Ventura "likes his hustle" or whatever. Maybe they use it on Brent Morel. What difference does it make in the end? This move is meaningless. Anybody the Sox would have used it on is better off getting regular ABs in AAA or AA. Again I ask, what is the ultimate effect? Whose roster spot is this affecting? It pretty much handcuffs what the Sox can do in the rule V draft as they wont be able to use that spot to carry an extra player that could contribute to the roster long term. If there is no one the Sox think could help long term, it makes sense. But this signing does nothing to move the organization forward.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 06:33 PM) I'm in a cave here in Clear Creek Canyon, impenetrable to local airwaves, apparently. Wasn't aware that O'Dowd had said anything. I'm going to blame the "all Broncos all the time" nature of the local sports media for my glaring ignorance. BTW, is it Blackmon they're projecting as a starter now? EDIT: just checked and it seems Blackmon is the guy. nvm. Sounds like they are moving CarGo to CF and bringing in Dickerson.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 07:24 PM) A $20M limit is a game changer, if it comes to pass, and maybe only gives the West Coast teams a real advantage, if the player gets the choice of equal bid teams. Something will have to be done for the Japanese league in return for the posting limit - not sure what that would be. Ownership opportunities in a Far East Division of mlb, with teams in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Pusan and Taipei is at least 20 years (and the return of the Concorde) away. Just dreamin' here. Sounds like the system will not allow the player to choose, but will award posting rights in reverse order of the standings (draft order). So the Sox would get rights if the Astros and Marlins passed. I wonder if this will lead to something like what happens with rule V picks where the rights are acquired by a team high up in the order and then traded to another team for cash or something like that. The way that the Cubs traded Hamilton to the Reds after selecting him.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 03:31 PM) We've got 4 choices. Trade Dunn and get nothing back. Trade Keppinger and get nothing back Have either no backup OF or no backup SS on the roster. A 6 man bullpen. Take your pick. I don't like any of those, but we have to chose one of them. Dunn has value he will bring back something if traded. Given the current landscape, his contract is not unreasonable.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) But at what cost? Nearly every team in the league has moved to utilizing the DH as a way to utilize depth effectively. The early innovators of this (A's, Rays) have seen great success, and there are so few monster DH bats left in the game. That roster spot is valuable -- especially if it allows some younger guys to get the PT they need. Teams that win WS rings do not observe this approach. Papi is 100% DH, the Rays and A's have combined for less World Series wins in the last 20 years than the White Sox. The approach does help keep guys fresher throughout the regular season, but in the playoffs those big bats are what make the difference. And as far as every team in the league, it is really only about three teams, the Rays, A's, and Orioles, and thats only cause they can't find anyone better to DH. The Angels and Ranger played some regulars there this season, but that was mostly due to injuries to Pujols and Berkman.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 11:26 AM) I sure do wish Dayan could hang at 3B. Move him there with De Aza in LF and Gardner in CF then go with something like.... Gardner-Semien-Abreu-Dunn-Garcia-De Aza-Viciedo-Jaso(PLZ)-Beckham I really wanna keep De Aza and Tank, but at the same time I want an upgrade defensively in CF, and OBP wise in the leadoff position....I'm in a pickle on the De Aza situation. Move Dunn for Gardner and all your problems are fixed.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 11:19 AM) They are also spending $200 million a year and fully expected to compete last year with Crawford, Kemp, and Ethier. It's completely different situations. It sure is, but the Dodgers results have been a lot better than the A's have had with Cespedes when he was utilized as the Sox will use Abreu. From most accounts Cespedes was thought to be a superior player to Puig but has struggled to adjust to the majors and impacted his value. The Sox are not in win now mode, at least they shouldn't be, so taking every pre-caution to protect your long term investments seems to make the most sense.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:43 AM) I personally think that's a bad idea, and not likely to happen. You'd have to ship some money with him, for one, which the Sox virtually never do. For another, despite people despising his K totals, he was one of the couple most productive hitters in the lineup. Finally, who plays DH instead as the starter? Konerko? Seems like a bad idea. Andy Wilkins? Dan Black? Even best case neither of those guys will touch Dunn's production, at least not in 2014. Keppinger? Ha! How about getting Viciedo to play DH and then adding a CF? That would make the team tremendously better defensively sliding De Aza over to LF. Or you rotate your DH/OF/3B/1B until you find a lineup that clicks or a prospect pushes someone and you need to use the spot. I think with the contracts that hitters are getting, there is not a need to include money in a deal, and a team will have the option of tendering an offer at the end of the season and re-couping a draft pick, so that has some value as well.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) You don't give someone $68 million to play in the minors, even if just to adjust. He is 100% making the roster. The Dodgers spent $42M and did the same thing. There is no reason to rush him out there as the team is not in place to contend anyway. But with this organizations record of breaking hitting prospects, I am sure you are right, regardless of what is best for the player and team long term he will be thrown to the wolves on opening day.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:42 AM) Seattle and Houston would be my first two calls for Dunn. Why would Houston have any interest? They are in the same boat as us building for the future, not adding one year stop gaps. Seattle, Baltimore, TB, Toronto, NYM, and Miami all seem like better fits.
-
If Abreu struggles in ST, it gives the Sox of having him go the same route as Viciedo and Puig of getting some success in the minors before coming up. The Sox could start him in AA and have him work his way up to the majors by June as he adjusts to American baseball. In the meantime they can work on dumping Dunn in a deal.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 11:11 PM) honestly the only thing i'm pissed about is that we didnt get Dexter Fowler. The Astros got him for pennies. Pennies. Rather have Pederson than either of them.
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 05:09 PM) Bring the one that got away BACK! This is the reason he got away. The Sox didn't like his motion and moved him, even though he had put up really good numbers. He made it a while before his bad mechanics caught up with him, but now he is broken down and a year away from signing with anyone.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 04:15 PM) Grandal posted an .863 OPS in '12 with half his games at Petco Park. In 60 games in '12 he posted 2.7 WAR. And was busted for PED's.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) Definitely. Jaso is rumored to be untradeable due to his concussion issues. And that he is not very good at his designated position.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) The difference between De Aza and Fowler is negligible. People want moves, but the Sox aren't going to make moves just to make moves. Relax. Plus Fowler will be a FA before the Sox are ready to compete, no need to give up value for that. I have not seen a deal yet that I thought Hahn either had the resources to make or wish he would have made if he could have. There is a lot of time left and the winter meetings haven't even started. I expect Hahn to be looking only at long term cost controlled pieces and there have not been many of those moved thus far.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 01:16 PM) It doesn't matter that he is a Boras guy. This isn't a Kenny Williams ran team. Hahn will deal with Boras. The biggest problem is that he had a bad injury and switched up his mechanics and lost velocity. I have soured on Hanson. I want to bring in a RH starter on the low but I don't know if it's either of these guys. I always thought the Boras thing was more of a JR issue than a KW issue. I will believe that we will deal with Boras when I see it.

Hes a solid backup to pair with whoever wins the job in the spring.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) When Tommy Hanson came up, he averaged 92.3 MPH on his fastball and it had some serious get up. It didn't average 90 this year (almost down to Dylan Axelrod range), his K/9 fell below 7, his line drive and flyball rates increased, and his control remained mediocre. I think he's hurt and I don't think he's even worth a flyer. He is hurt and that messed up his mechanics. http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/201...viewed-as-gold/

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 09:33 AM) Tommy Hanson is genuinely intriguing. Yes the biggest obstacle is that he is a Boras guy so that probably takes us out of the running. But - Coop'll fix him. Definitely worth a flyer to a re-building team like the Sox, but I am sure that Boras will steer him to a more pitcher friendly stadium.
