  1. I said Sox should extend him back in April for 10/$200. I stand by that and I’m fairly certain that’s a number that gets it done.
  2. Not at all. Cuba has a smaller population than the State of Illinois and I imagine the process of defecting from their homeland creates a bond and life experience that unites countrymen like this that white boys like Eaton and Frazier could never relate to.
  3. I wouldn’t say impossible but it certainly makes things much more difficult. They are going to need insane production from their farm system to make it work with their assumed payroll constraints. Hosmer/Machado will likely account for 35-45% of their team payroll over the next several years. That’s a big number.
  4. Overcoming an annual expenditure of $50M between two players (Hosmer and Machado) that combine to produce 2-3 fWAR annually is not an easy task for a mid market team like the Padres.
  5. Yep. Been saying this for nearly a year now and he has yet to prove me wrong. I wouldn’t take this guy and his salary on even if the Padres gave him to the Sox for no player in return. His contract carries negative value imo. It will be an interesting comparison in future years seeing how the Padres approach to their rebuild compares to the Sox. They’ve had a stronger/deeper farm system over the past few years. Yet, will the mega signings of Hosmer and Machado act as anchors that ultimately limit their potential and result in less success than the Sox over the next 5 years, a team that has preserved their financial flexibility to this point in the rebuild?
  6. As I said in one of the Machado threads, he’s still got some work to do to hit 3 fWAR this season. Currently sitting at 2.6 and his wRC+ is down to 107, along with an OPS of below 800. If the Sox had signed this guy, people would be ripping Hahn right now.
  7. He has a 82 wRC+ with a BABIP 24 points above his career average this season. Garcia is nothing more than a super sub on a good team.
  8. JDM in RF in that scenario? Not thrilled about that.
  9. As they should. He’s one of the best hitters to hit the free agent market over the last few years (if he opts out which I think is still 50/50).
  10. I said 70 before the season started so I’m sticking to it.
  11. 1. 110, 150, 117 wRC+ in A+, AA, AAA 2. 131 wRC+ in MLB 3. 142 wRC+ in MLB 4. 100 wRC+ in MLB 5. 305, 155, 136 wRC+ in A+, AA, AAA 6. 311, 138, 122 wRC+ in R, A, A+ 7. 140, 48 wRC+ in AAA, MLB 8. 130 wRC+ in MLB 9. ???
  12. I think it was @Balta1701 who said 1 WAR is equal to approx $10M on the open market. So by that measure, the over/under for fair value on Machado over the life of his contract is 30 WAR. Yea, I’ll take the under easily.
  13. Is it truly a down year for him though? He’s had worse years at the plate and his 108 wRC+ this season isn’t that far off his career number. His performance last year was the outlier imo, not this season.
  14. Agree 100%. There’s still a lot of holes to fill so they better pick the right guys if they have plans for competing next season.
  15. I’d think he’d bounce back a little offensively at some point over the next couple seasons but I can’t imagine his defense will improve as he ages so those may very well offset.
  16. And they’d still be well below .500 this season while needing to fill the same holes (RF, DH, pitching) with $30M less to spend. Guys like Mendick and Garcia will provide depth at the super sub position. Madrigal needs to be a regular as soon as he’s promoted.
  17. What does 3-3.5 during a “prime” age season turn into a few years from now once he’s past his “prime”?
  18. At the game. Absolute BOMB. 839 OPS, 31 homers, 112 RBI but he sucks ?
  19. I’d take Calhoun over Puig. Should be cheaper too I think.
  20. Considering the black holes in RF and DH the Sox have had in recent years (minus the one fluke Avi season), $25M AAV for a player like Harper really isn’t bad value to improve those areas. Especially with his stick, you could slide him to DH over the last few years of his contract as his defense in RF erodes. Then of course is the marketing aspect, which helps offset the salary burden as well.
  21. Meanwhile, White Sox RF/DH have combined for -5 fWAR this season and Harper sits at 3.6. Yet, many still insist Machado is/was the better fit. What am I missing here?
  22. His fWAR this season is closer to Yolmer Sanchez than it is to Yoan Moncada ?
