Rumor: Sox Pursuing Jose Quintana
It’s not that simple but we’ll save that for another thread

Rumor: Sox Pursuing Jose Quintana
Oh yea, no doubt Padres killed that trade at the time. But 12 years from now when his contract ends will it even matter? Will the Padres have won a WS before the Sox? Or even worse, will Tatis Jr. contract actually prevent the Padres from winning a WS because he can’t stay on the field and they’ve reached their payroll limit in large part because of his contract?

I won’t debate that and this also remains one of the biggest flaws with MLB compared to other major sports

The two go hand in hand. Hard to win a WS if you aren’t fiscally responsible (unless you’re the Mets, Yankees or Dodgers of course).

That Tatis contract is not something I would want any part of. Far too risky for me. It’s basically fair value if he stays on the field 125 games/year and continues to perform as he has when healthy. If either health or performance deteriorate over the next few years, it’s going to look like an albatross of a contract.

Rumor: Sox Pursuing Jose Quintana
My point is it was more luck than skill on the Padres’ part. Regardless, they’re now on the hook for the 4th largest contract in MLB for a player that can’t stay on the field so I guess the joke’s on them.

His signing was prior to the international signing bonus limits

Rumor: Sox Pursuing Jose Quintana
If Tatis was such a slam dunk, why didn’t Preller just sign him initially? It only cost $700k to sign him. The irony of that whole deal is that the Padres are now on the hook for possibly one of the worst contracts in MLB history if he can’t stay on the field (Tatis Jr. gets hurt more than Eloy). There’s a word for that: karma

Twins about to lose to the Brewers. Sox 3 GB after Liam closes this one out.

None of that discounts what Cueto has done for this team and that is fill the fifth spot in the rotation, vacated by Rodon, without a drop off in performance.

Same pattern as last season. Fading hard in the second half.

7/24 Games
People downplaying the idea of Colas playing for the big club next season about to find out. I stand by prior statement that he will outperform Conforto over the next three seasons.

If the Sox trade for Juan Soto we have a chance.
The good news is that Corbin only has 2+ seasons remaining on his contract and like I said I would assume Nats are eating some percentage of it. Obviously Jerry and most other teams would balk at the requirement of taking on his entire salary in a deal for Soto unless the asking price is greatly reduced. If the Nats eat no money, the combined salary of Soto and Corbin is pretty much what Soto would make on the open market and there would be very little surplus value from the Nats end in such a deal.

I’m not so sure about that. Even teams like the Dodgers have been very mindful of the luxury tax limit in recent years and I’m not sure what a contract like Corbin’s would do to their payroll relative to the limit.

I think the Sox have the bullets to get it done without including Vaughn or Kopech if Corbin is included in the deal as rumored (and I am assuming the Nats eat some of his salary too).

? Conforto does nothing for this team this season and hardly moves the needle for them next season. Soto is exactly the type of player the Sox should be going all in to acquire. An absolute perfect fit for this roster. Send Eloy, Sheets, Martin, and the entire farm system for all I care. Acquiring Soto to man LF everyday makes the Sox a bonafide contender this season and next. Vaughn can DH, spot start in OF and 1b. Engel/Pollock can cover RF well enough, especially when you’ve got them batting 8th in the lineup.

4 teams called Conforto post-draft
The poster I replied to did. “I’d like someone who can help us right now.” Conforto isn’t helping right now or in two months.

Exactly! That’s how low my expectations are for Conforto this season.
