QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 03:31 PM) Fixed. The only thing Owens does better than Anderson is run. Other then that, Owens is a failure in all aspects of the game. He is terrible in the outfield who does not know how to read a flyball, and his arm is about as good my grandma's. He's clueless at bat, and has absolutely no power.

God, why do we think Owens is a baseball player? I'm not high on either Owens or Anderson, but Anderson is eons better then Owens.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 10:19 AM) tRA is a fairly new metric, I think WAR has been around for a little longer. I can link you to some good sites if you want to learn about them, I would just post the links here but I don't get the feeling that anyone's particularly receptive towards the fact that there may be other ways of evaluating players and so I'd rather not waste my time. Just let me know. I'll have to decline you're offer. I'll stick to ERA, W-L, WHIP, and a few other stats, and also basically just watching a player with my own two eyes. Stats are mainly useful if you've never really seen a player before, IMO. But there is no metric greater then just being able to watch a player and evaluate them from there. Stats don't show what type of stuff or smarts a pitcher has. Stats don't show what type of swing and approach players have. etc.
-
This is good news, I thought it'd take MUCH longer then this. I think Contreras could be a legit option out of the pen. I don't think his arm can handle starting anymore, considering how his stuff has gotten continuously worse sine 06, and the best time I recall seeing him throw since 05 or 06 was when coming out of the pen.
-
Please tell me I'm not the only who doesn't know WTF WAR and tRA, and all that other crap is. I've been following and watching baseball my whole life, and I never heard of those stats.

If we wanted to compete this year... Javy. If we want to rebuild and build a strong team for after this year, Colon, the prospects, and the 10 million. And I believe Kenny is doing the later. I don't think he honestly believes we'll be a major playoff contender this year, but he's planning on building a solid young core for after this year (Thome will be gone, we'll have more prospects coming up, we'll have a bunch of saved money to make a splash in the free agent market-especially if the economy recovers-if we wanted to, etc). If we do wind up being a playoff contender next year, that's gravy, but I think KW saw the same things we saw, a very mediocre team that got into the playoffs by winning a weak division, and the only possible way for a world series was if they got EXTREMELY hot. I think KW wants to rebuild, and I have no problem with that. Right now we are an old, slow, all or nothing, weak pitching team. In a couple of years though, with the way our farm is looking, and all the salary we will be saving, that could all change.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 07:03 PM) OPS+ Cameron since 2001: 123 109 108 104 114 121 103 110 Anderson: 41 65 2 81 How is Anderson a "little" worse. Cameron is also better on the basepaths and is still a solid defensive CF. The biggest knock on him would be his $10 million salary which now starting to look like a lot based on the market. maybe more then a little, but they still are very similar players.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) "Proven" isnt the word I would use. I understand what you are saying, I just dont think proven is the right word Okay, how about someone who isn't over the hill, doesn't have major durability concerns, and can be counted on the be at least an average starter? Kind of long, but gets the point across, IMO.

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 10:12 PM) I hate this trade everyday. I hate the Sweeney, Gio, and DLS trade more then either. Swisher is a pretty terrible player, and I'm not sad to see him go at all, but I think Sweeney, Gio, and DLS > Betemit, Marquez, and Nunez (was Nunez, right?). While Gio has had his location troubles, he's still got above average stuff and has a higher ceiling then Marquez. Betemit is a solid utility infielder but Sweeney is at least a decent starter. And I don't know much about Nunez, but while DLS did have TJS and is still a while away from the majors, he's got the stuff to be a real good pitcher, whether it be in the bullpen or rotation.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 10:23 PM) The latest rumor was Mike Cameron for Swisher. Does that sound better than what we got in return? He's a CFer, but would anyone really be happy with Mike Cameron as a return? I'm sure a few would, plus there's the sentimental idea of bringing him back 10 years later, but...he's not an option for leadoff hitter either, which is one of the biggest "issues" hanging over the team at this point. Brian Anderson is basically a little worse hitting (at least at this stage of Cameron's career), younger, and white version of Mike Cameron.

I'm not going to feel remotely comfortable with our rotation until we bring in a proven starter, and right now, neither Garcia or Colon are proven starters. That Vazquez trade is really hurting us right now. However, that trade does help us with the future, as I am a big fan of Flowers and that 3B prospect (I forget his name). I find it funny how some people were making fun of the Indians and some other teams going with the strategy of throwing as much crap against the wall and see what sticks, but that's EXACTLY what we're doing right now. Colon, Garcia(?), Broadway, Marquez, Richard, and Poreda. Poreda being the only one who might not be crap.

One of the first "projected" standings, Sox dead last

If we go into the season with our current roster, I would not be surprised. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) Why would the Angels want Dye over Konerko? They need a 1B more than another corner OF. I think any team that trades for Dye is looking at him as a 1B/DH type, who could play LF.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 07:47 AM) No, you aren't a terrorist. You just choose to fight terrorism by having the same strategy as terrorists. So wanting to kill them before they kill me is having a terrorist like mentality? Okay, I guess. -

lol, now I'm a terrorist. Cool. Time to go bomb people because I don't agree with their ideology! -
Note to self... next time on trial or on death row, pluck out own eye and eat it.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 07:52 PM) or, maybe you do.... My god, are you just doing this to piss me off? I have explained this over and over in this thread (maybe not in that post), I want to kill Hamas pretty much before they, and other terrorist groups, kill me or any other americans. I don't care if Hamas and other islamo nazies don't like Jews or America, or whatever, but I do care when they start threatening the lives of innocent people because they WANT to rid the world of Jews and "infidels", and what-not. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 07:52 PM) Ok, I'm gonna go ahead and bite here. Do you even know why? You just kind of keep repeating this as if a bunch of Palestinians just woke up one day and said "hey guys let's form a group where we will just randomly kill the Jews lololz" Do you know why the Palestinians support Hamas? Do you know what the Palestinians (supposedly) want out of all of this? From what I understand, it was originally just a dispute over land that's been going on for the past couple hundred of years, but it is Hamas and these other radical groups that formed, and they feel it's almost as their sacred duty to kill all Jews. However, I'm gonna have to cut this arguement short cause I have to finish studying for a final that I will likely bomb. -
Lucy's back, huh... Wonder how's he recovered since that injury.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 07:43 PM) And again, very similar to what Hamas would say. They want to kill people they label as "infidels", and if innocents get in the way, then hey, its just war. By the way, I'm actually (mostly) in Israel's corner on this particular incursion. I just want to try to get the idea across that your cavalier attitude as to how its done is pretty similar to the attitudes held by your enemies. No, no, no. You see the difference is I DON'T want to bomb anyone. However, Hamas and other terrorist groups DO WANT to bomb people and have and will. And if anyone thinks sitting back, condemning their actions with "words", and hoping they'll get tired of killing people eventually, they're wrong. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 07:28 PM) Perhaps he was pointing it out because you just finished saying that you wanted to bomb the s*** out of their territory, despite the fact that you know next to nothing (by your own admission) about what is going on. Its actually a pretty good parallel. You want an eye for an eye - you see terrorists kill people, so you want to kill people too. You specifically stated "If civilians die, oh well, get used to it." to civilians dying as a result. Sounds a lot like the justifications you might hear Hamas use. Lol, this is silly. Hamas WANTS to kill civilians and pretty much everyone who disagrees with. To defeat Hamas, some citizens will die. This is part of war, and if you want to defeat peices of s*** like Hamas, you got to do some things that are unpleasent. And Hamas aren't people, they are the lowest forms of animals on the planet, along to murders and rapists. To kill these sorry excuses for people, there will be casualties, and some of them are necessary for the greater good. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 07:17 PM) If it costs us Dye, then just keep what we already have. Okay, if you meant that, say that. But to actually say Willits is worse then Owens is just silly. The two aren't even close.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 07:15 PM) You have the same "kill all" attitude that you despise in your enemy. lol, are you really comparing me, and pretty much others like me, to Hamas? You're nuts! I don't want to kill anyone, but because terrorists want to kill us, and every one who doesn't agree with them, there's only one choice, them or us. LOL, do you HONESTLY have any idea what you're saying? Yeah, you busted me... In fact, I secretly want to go kill everyone in England because I don't like their style of comedy. You don't like it, I'll kill you to. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) Ah yes, Willits name brought up again. I'd rather have Jerry Owens than Willits...and that's saying a lot. Willits is so much better of a ball player then Owens, it really isn't close. Willits actually knows what he's doing on a baseball field, and plays really good D. Owens is actually one of the worst baseball players I have seen in the past couple of years, right up there with Andy Gonzalez.
