Phil Rogers on Sox quest to find leadoff man
BearSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 08:16 PM) There's no way that Dunn should be in the same lineup as Thome. the Cell will be air-conditioned by all the whiffs that those two will have. Yeah, but there'd also be bombs droping all over the place as well. -
I personally hate the idea of a playoff, as I think the bowl games are great. However, there should be a plus one system. My plan would be: Keep the BCS as is for the most part. Use BCS standings and conference champs to determine who goes to the major BCS bowls: Rose, Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta. I'd also add one other major BCS bowl to be played on New Years day or the week of, and there would be no conference tie-ins but rather both teams would be at large. These 10 teams will automatically jump up to the top 10 (use the BCS to determine the order) in the Polls. After the 5 major bowl games are played, you would take the remaining 5 teams, and whoever gets ranked no. 1 and no. 2 would play in the National Championship game which would take place in about 10 days or so from when the last major BCS bowl was played. Also, I would eliminate the rule where you can only have at most 2 teams from a conference in the BCS, but that 3rd team could only be put into the new bowl I created. Play the best teams! Oh yeah, I'd make the Big East a permanent tie-in for the Oragne bowl, so it would be the ACC champ vs. the Big East champ every year. So, if it was up to me, and this was put in this year, it would look something like: The Rose Bowl - Big Ten no. 1 vs. Pac 10 no. 1 - Penn St. vs. USC ^No controversy here. The Fiesta Bowl - Big 12 no. 1 vs. At Large - Oklahoma vs. Texas ^This would settle the argument between Oklahoma or Texas. I think both teams are so good, and the previous game was so close, it wouldn't be fair to go with the head to head to choose who is "better." If they used this system, they could schedule an epic rematch for which team would likely go to the NC. The Sugar Bowl - SEC no. 1 vs. At Large - Florida vs. Ohio St. ^There is a rematch between Oklahoma and Texas, but it wouldn't be the same with Florida and Alabama. Not only would they be playing each other in two consecutive games, but there wasn't as much controversy or confusion like the Big 12 because of the 3-way tie. And screw Utah. The Orange Bowl - ACC no. 1 vs. Big East no. 1 - Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati ^No controversy here. The New Bowl That Doesn't Have a Name Yet - At Large vs. At Large - Alabama vs. Texas Tech ^Alabama gets put here because of what I said earlier about why a rematch vs. Florida would be bad, and Texas Tech gets put here because they would be the 3rd team from the Big 12 conference here. And, like I said before, screw Utah. They're a good team, but the only 2 teams they'd have a shot against on this list is Virginia Tech and Cincinnati. The BCS Top 10 would look like this (basically, the 10 teams in these Bowls jump ahead of any team not in these Bowls ranked ahead of them): 01. Oklahoma 02. Florida 03. Texas 04. Alabama 05. USC 06. Texas Tech 07. Penn St. 08. Ohio St. 09. Cincinnati 10. Virginia Tech ----------I'll throw in the next couple of teams just to make it a bit clearer 11. Utah 12. Boise St. 13. TCU 14. Oklahoma St. 15. Georgia Tech ...and so on. Okay, lets just say the winners of the 5 main BCS bowls are USC, Texas, Florida, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech. You would take these 5 remaining teams and rank them. Lets say they get ranked like: 1. Florida 2. Texas 3. USC 4. Texas Tech 5. Cincinnati So, the NC would then be Florida vs. Texas. Of course this system still isn't perfect, but I think it'd be a whole lot better and add some more excitement. Thoughts?

Phil Rogers on Sox quest to find leadoff man
BearSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Id still love to see us get Figgins to be our 3B and leadoff hitter, but again, I don't think that's any more likely then us signing Furcal. -
late in the season, all of Vazquez's stuff sucked. He had nothing on his fastball with little movement, his curve floated, and his change didn't really matter because his fastball sucked so much.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 10:37 AM) Dont use these facts to muddle things up. Bearsox has seen his stuff, and thats all he needs to know I really don't care if you call me an idiot. I remember being called an idiot back when we stupidly traded 3 prospects for Swisher.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 12:32 PM) So because Williams says something, it's the gospel? The Sox may have middle infielders that don't suck(the jury is still out) but the same can't be said for CF. The Sox don't have a starter on the roster right now. On top of it, this team doesn't have anyone for the lead off spot. Furcal can fill both those spots, with Alexei being able to slide in CF. The Furcal talk is no more silly than you claiming Chin-lung Hu is going to be a star based on what you saw in the Futures Game. You know what, I don't care, keep on dreaming that we are going to make a play for Furcal. It really doesn't matter to me what KW said about Alexei in the offseason, I find it quite obvious that the team's intention back from July of last year was to eventually move Alexei to SS. I once have thought about us making a move for Furcal, but I just don't see the fit. I'd say there's a 99.9 chance that KW and Ozzie have had every intention of making Alexei the starting SS since July. Lol, and can you please show me a quote where I said Hu would be a star? I remember I liked him a lot, especially before we got Alexei, but I don't think I ever said he'd be a star. I still think there's a good chance he can be a decent player. We must not forget he was a rookie who was in his first go-around in the MLB. -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 01:48 AM) In what world is MB always a question mark? He has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the MLB for 8 seasons now. You know he's going to give you 30+ starts, 200+ innings, and an era under 4. At this point in his career, and with his velocity declining, I'd say he's a question mark. But then again, I've neverb been as high on Buehrle as everyone else is.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 11:55 PM) Why...because Kenny SAID SO? Ever think that was completely a smokescreen/ploy for OC? Have you ever seen Lexi play short (besides maybe once? I'm not sold that he'd be stellar over there. Furcal does make a lot of sense on many levels. Will it happen...who actually knows. You can tell when Kenny is telling the truth and when Kenny is lying. I've been saying since July of last year, this team has every intention of making Alexei the starting SS in 09 and beyond. I highly doubt we spend 13 million a year on Furcal, a SS, when we finally have some middle infielders who don't suck. -
You can cross of Para for one simple reason, he's a lefty. KW isn't gonna go with 4 lefties in the rotation, and it's obvious that one of the two vacant spots will be filled by either Poreda/Richard.

I guarantee everyone that Alexei will be the team's starting SS on opening day 2009. This Furcal talk is beyond silly. -
Javy gets a lot of unfair hate here. Was he a stud? No. He was solid who had shown flashes of brilliance and some flashes of s***. Yeah, it was frustrating, but we will miss him in the rotation. I like the return we got for Javy, but I am very scared about our rotation. We have no 4 or 5 starter, and I don't count "No Stuff" Richard, but hopefully Poreda could step up in ST and be a solid 5th starter for us. Plus, I think it's very possible to see a regression of one of, if not both, Danks and Floyd (I'm not saying they overachieved, but young pitchers, and young players for the most part, will hit a wall. It might happen, it might not, but don't be shocked if it does). And Buehrle is always a question mark. I'll miss Javy, but I'm happy with the return we got. Also, Javy is much more of a national league pitcher as he isn't just a pitcher, but a baseball player who likes to hit and be a part of both sides of the game. Both sides should be happy, and people calling him s*** and such, that's just silly.

baseball-reference is bet for when you want to look at some of the history of the game, and such. thebaseballcube is much better when you are looking at players from today.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) You don't trade Jenks for defense. Lol, KW should be fired on the spot if he traded Jenks for Gwynn. Only a retarded monkey would make such a trade. I was just saying that Gwynn is a solid defensive player.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 08:40 PM) I don't like the notion of not acquiring certain talent because of minor league depth, but with Fields supposedly healthy, and the large commitment made to Dayan, using Jenks to acquire a young 3rd baseman might be a waste of resources. I don't think Gamel should be qualified as a thirdbaseman though. He's likely gonna have to move to either 1B, LF, or DH in the AL.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 08:23 PM) There is absolutely no difference between Tony Gwynn Jr. and the average light hitting speedster with questionable fielding ability that you can sign off the street, aside from his pedigree I suppose. Tony Gwynn Jr. is actually a pretty solid defender though.

If we have any interest in Cantu, and I mean any interest, someone must then have Kenny's family locked up in their basement at gunpoint, demanding we get Cantu.
-
1.) McClouth isn't a leadoff hitter. 2.) He's not that good.
-
f*** man, why does Cabrera hate us so much? Not only was he vastly overrated and really not that good, he was a "me" player. I qualify anyone that would call up the scorer during a game to complain about them giving him an error a "me" player. Now he's likely gonna accept arb? WHY!*@#*$Y@#(&*>?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) Speed on the bases I know he's faster, but he's not that much faster anymore. Besides, I'd take Dye over Abreu anyday of the week.
-
Nate McLouth is becomming one of the most overrated players in baseball, IMO. He's a solid player, but from what I've seen of him, he isn't an all-star must have player worth giving up a ton for. As for a big move, I still have my fingers crossed on Dunn, and trading Dye, among maybe some others, for a CF/leadoff hitter and a quality 4 or 5 starter.
-
My some-what realistic Dream lineup (Don't ask me how): 1. Figgins, 3B 2. Getz/Lillibridge, 2B 3. Quentin, RF 4. Thome, DH 5. Konerko, 1B 6. Dunn, LF 7. Ramirez, SS 8. Pierzynski, C 9. Tavares, CF I guess some explanation for this could be Angels wanting and trading for Dye to fill in at 1B/DH for a year or two if they don't resign Tex (which they likely won't), and us getting Figgins and something else in return. Then trade something little for Tavares, and then package Fields and something else for a decent 4th or 5th starter.
-
Why don't we just do a three-man booth with DJ, Hawk, and Stone? Hawk probably isn't gonna be around much longer (I'm not saying he's gonna die soon, but he's close to retirement, IMO), and it'd be nice to have his replacement still in the booth and not miss a beat. However, I hope DJ gets the MLB Network gig. It's a better situation for him, IMO, and it'd be nice to know they have at least one guy there who is a bit favorable to the White Sox.
-
Not to mention potentially 5 draft picks in the top 100.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:36 PM) Edwin Jackson sucks. His name should be banned from this board to finally end this 4 year man crush. Please justify how he sucks. He put up stats good enough for a no. 4 or 5 guy, has the potential to be even better then that, has great stuff, is cheap, and the Rays want to move to make room for Price. What's not to like?
-
QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:14 PM) that would be pretty nice...especially if we could get a young pitcher + another prospect for dye...theres an awful lot of on base ability in that lineup with dunn, thome, quentin...i wouldnt sweat the K's too much though, but you are right, dunn, fields thome and alexei could help lead that team to mlb records in Ks...whatever though..my personal feelings towards Ks are rather well documented around here, so it wouldnt bother me too much I don't know why you included Ramirez. He doesn't K a lot, and hopefully that number continues to decrease with his development as a major leaguer.
