  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 07:21 PM) How could you trust someone who's governing tactics include running away (i.e., secession) or deferring to a higher being? And if I need spirituality I'll go run over to the neighborhood church. I need someone who's actually going to effectively govern and has some actual ideas. Being prepared to run away from a bad deal would have served us well in Vietnam and Afghanistan. Mock spirituality all you want, but we have never elected someone without it, including our current President who played that card pretty hard. IIRC, and I do, Carter also played it well. Even Clinton gave it a wink and a nod. I am a little surprised as I sit here and think about it, but the Dem Presidents have embraced it more than say Reagan or Bush Sr. Jobs ~ Texas created them better than any other state during Perry's terms. Hard to dispute that. And that is what the rest of the field and Obama will have to deal with.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) LOL. What the hell happened to you? You must have multiple personality disorder. One day Perry's the biggest slimeball around. The next he can do no wrong. He's the front runner for the only party Kap will vote for in a Presidential race.
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 07:05 PM) Other than praying, what solutions has he proposed to address energy concerns in Texas? Why does he refuse to incorporate solar into the mix? Last I heard, it's quite sunny in Texas. And how can you support someone that hinted at secession? That's about as un-American as you can get. Drive through Texas and see all of our oil/natural gas wells. They are huge employers in the state. And once again, the secession line isn't going to cost him votes with anyone who was going to vote for him.
  4. So you would have voted for John Kerry, a decorated soldier who served in a combat zone, instead of someone who used his daddy's connections and "served" part time, state side, in the national guard. Cool.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 12:51 PM) Good point Kap. What we need is a leader that defers problem solving responsibilities to God and praying. You mean reflection and thoughtful consideration? Most Americans will at least admit to some form of spirituality. So far we have now knowingly elected an atheist. Will we tolerate a fanatic? Probably not, but praying will not sink a candidate.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) Because if we don't he'll sentence us to die for crimes we didn't commit? Really? If that really becomes a key issue, if that really is what the Dems will attack Perry for, start making a set of keys for Perry to the White House. Do you really believe no innocent people were convicted in Arkansas while Clinton was governor? Wasn't the system in Illinois so bad a pro capital punishment governor halted executions? This election will be about jobs. No state did better at creating jobs than the one that Perry ran. He has been governor long enough that good or bad, he gets the credit. And btw, he did that with the help of all those illegal immigrants along the border. Thankfully, other states don't want undocumented workers.
  7. Once Perry has the nomination sewn up, y'all are going to like him more and more.
  8. America can be the best at whatever we value as a society. If we placed the same high value on say health care that we do on the military we would apply the necessary resources to make us #1. It wouldn't just be the brave Doctors and technicians. It would be the researchers, the technicians, and all of society. You are ignoring all the civilian contributions. Plus, I think it is really disregardful for you to impersonate a soldier. But whatever.
  9. Welcome back to school signs are starting to spring up.
  10. If you don't believe me, start your own army and see how well you do self funding.
  11. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 09:11 AM) Wait...do you think you deserve some of the credit for our triumphs because we are funded by your tax dollars? Maybe I read that wrong, but that seems to be your implication. Yes. Civilian oversight has created the greatest military system in the world. Civilian support of the military, both financially and philosophically, has allowed all those cool tools you have. The funding has allowed a training system beyond anything the world has ever seen. If the country did not support the military, and funded it at a much lower level, those victories would be much harder, perhaps impossible. It's like ignoring the owner when a team wins a championship.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 08:00 AM) This logic really pisses me off. This country has engaged in reckless spending for decades, heck almost 100 years now. When you finally get one group who is willing to stand up and try and stop them, THEY get victimized. Seriously this is akin to the person who takes the keys from the really drunk guy. The really drunk guy gets pissed off because he is "OK to drive home" and "I have been much worse than this before" Logically he should be pissed off at himself for being stupid and endangering himself. Instead he is pissed off at the person who tries to stand up and save him. Should we be cutting now? No. But pretending we don't have a debt problem and demonizing the people who are trying to keep us from turning into Greece or Spain is just short sighted and partisan politics at its worst. But the left wing has their media marching orders, and they are going to keep pounding home that spending money we don't have is good, even though we can see what is happening around the world to countries that are steps past where we are now, yet are on the road too if we keep up our spending ways. No it would be nicer if the left wing would just put their keys in someone else's hands and sober up, but they aren't about to do that. Which is why the Tea Party was even allowed to come into existence, let alone prominence, despite the media slander sessions. Funny that we agree, we just pick different times to say it. Isn't that what I said when Bush was busy cutting taxes on the people who could most afford to pay taxes?
  13. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 07:17 AM) I never said otherwise. All I said is that those civilians don't get credit for our successes. FDR didn't win WWII, GHWB didn't crush Saddam in 1991, Obama didn't get Osama and so on. Then don't b**** at any cuts in funding or a lack of support from citizens. Do it on your own.
  14. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 09:38 PM) I'm in the infantry, you arrogant ass. And single handily lowering my opinion of some soldiers with every post.
  15. I believe civilian control of our military has worked very well for our 200+ years.
  16. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 11:48 PM) Las Vegas I was a late follower, but it did jump the shark with Selleck
  17. Buffalo Bill starring Dabny Coleman in the early 80s. It was nominated for a bunch of emmys including best comedy, was only on for two years. The entire series fits on one DVD. News Radio really died an early death.
  18. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 07:19 AM) Tex that's why I wonder how much of Jackie Kennedy's Homemaker Princess of Camelot act was just an affectation — basically her playing the role and not really showing much of her self. I never though much about it until watching the ABC White House Tour reels just a couple of years ago. I don't know if it was her reading from a script, being camera shy, or what, but to me she just comes off as completely vapid in that hour-long slice of media history. Certainly she was more engaging than she comes off here. This about what was happening in society when she was in the White House. Society was beginning to change at a rapid pace. What would she have been doing if she wasn't first lady?
  19. QUOTE (The Sir @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 07:47 AM) So it's acceptable to cheat on your lover if they cheat on you? I strongly disagree. JFK was in the wrong, but by mimicking his poor behsvior, Jackie was equally wrong and equally classless. So what if she couldn't confront him? She could still maintain her dignity and her honor by upholding her end of the marital vows. She chose not to do that, and thus, she disgraced herself as much as he did. I don't disagree that she disgraced herself by today's standards. But I'm not going to cast such a harsh light on what she did.
  20. Seinfeld eventually replaced MASH on my all time list although Frasier is also in the mix somewhere. Looking over some of the mentions I have to say Hill Street Blues was a hell of a show. Currently Criminal Minds is my favorite drama and Big Bang my favorite comedy. Animated, it would be King of the Hill replacing Family Guy for me.
  21. We keep finding out that elected leaders and other famous people are actually humans and the entire range of human events happens to them. It seems odd that she should remain celibate while he was having those affairs. As far as the types of men she had affairs with, that is the social circle she was in. It would have been rather difficult for her to have had an affair with Bud the mechanic from the Quick Lube. She did have a fairly successful career as a literary editor at Doubleday. She clearly did not need to work. The position was more than ceremonial, she kept regular office hours and by all accounts did very well for the company.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 02:39 PM) How so? What effect will that money have on jobs or the economy? Helps out newspapers and other media outlets. Provide campaign jobs like secretaries, blog writers, canvases, advance people of various talents, consultants.
