Sox vs Cubs 6-25 game thread 3:05 first pitch

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) You're being kind. The offense still blows. But hey, if the other team can't score at all, it doesn't matter. Their .763 OPS in June is 8th in MLB.

QUOTE (VAfan @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 04:45 PM) AJ is also moving up. Pierre can hit better. Beckham is going to find his stroke at some point this year I believe. Ramirez always improves as the year goes on. I don't have much hope for Kotsay/Jones, but we now have Viciedo as an option at DH, 3B, and 1B. And Teahan, while bad, has been a better hitter for the Sox this year than all of the above other than Jones. fixed

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 10:23 AM) We'll never know. Precisely, we will never know. All we do know is that Soxtalk posters will continue to disproportionately ascribe blame to Walker for the failings of any hitter rather than give credit for their successes. Is Quentin qlutch? I don't know. But look at: Konerko, for example, for his career: .273/.346/.498/.844 with no one on .284/.363/.489/.851 with runners on Quentin for his career: .215/.309/.434/.743 with no one on .293/.385/.544/.929 with runners on Does Quentin manage to focus more with men on? Does he just hit a lot better when the pitcher is out of the stretch?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 06:56 PM) Why can't Viciedo hit? I'm not sure why there is the assumption Mark Freakin' Teahen has more upside offensive THIS season than Viciedo. Maybe Viciedo can remain as hot as he has been in 60 games at AAA whilst at the major league level at the age of 21. Maybe. I wouldn't bet on it, though. I wouldn't bet on that for virtually any 21 year old prospect. Especially one who walked 8 times in 62 games. Is that going to improve in the majors? QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 06:56 PM) Maybe it's the assumption he will make one error per game at 3B? I don't know. It can't be worse than Teahen down there. I assume he is worse than Teahen at 3rd, and Teahen has been bad. I haven't seen Viciedo, but obviously Kenny has. And having all of the information, Kenny decided to go out and pick up Teahen, and to 20 year old Viciedo, say, "forget it, move him to first he can't play 3rd every day."

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:57 PM) hello brian anderson, joe borchard, josh fields. Indeed, Beckham is the same as those players. Also, at 9 1/2 games out, the Sox will not get back into the division race this year. They will never make it to .500.
-
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 01:53 PM) I never want to see Mark Teahen play 3B again unless he's doing it for the opponent. Scratch that, I never want to see him put on a uniform again unless it's for the opponent. He was our 4th best hitter on the season when he went down. Nobody has overtaken him since, and Jones has done everything in his power to make Teahen 3rd best. He would have done it already if he played more than twice a week. By your logic, you should not want to see anyone put on a Sox uniform other than Rios or Konerko.

QUOTE (pktmotion @ Jun 21, 2010 -> 10:52 PM) Dunn is a slugger. I personally was pulling for him in 2008, when he was a free agent and we were after Abreu. Before that I think he put up 40 HR/Season 3 out of 4 years. If the Sox acquire him, which is slightly a pipe dream, no one here should have cause to complain. He'll do fine. Dunn would be a big boost to our offense agreed. At this stage, he is basically a better Jim Thome than Jim Thome. But you destroy a ton of his value by putting him in Left Field. Pretty sure he was routinely beating Manny for baseball's biggest defensive liability. And we didn't need a 1B or DH then. He'd be a big boost now, but as others have mentioned, I think Washington would rather just keep him unless someone makes a big offer. I also wouldn't mind a time machine so we could pick up Aubrey Huff last offseason for $3 million to do exactly what Kotsay does, except Huff is putting up a .933 OPS and San Fran isn't a super hitter friendly park.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 21, 2010 -> 09:48 PM) well below average defense... Fangraphs has Pierre as the 2nd best LF in baseball behind Crawford, and yes that's even with taking into account his weak arm. Rios #5 CF Quentin 2nd worst RF behind Ethier.
-
QUOTE (pktmotion @ Jun 21, 2010 -> 12:35 AM) Watching the Sox play in National Park(how the ball just seemed to hang up in the outfield) it's incredible to think Dunn hit 38 homers last year. And beyond comprehension on what he'd hit at US Cellular. He'd hit just about the same number. He played in one of the best hitter's parks in baseball in Cincinnati facing weak National League pitching and hit only as many as 8 more homers than that. You wouldn't expect him to come over to the American League and become a better hitter, as virtually no players do.

Chris Sale signs for a bargain; expected in majors this year
Vance Law replied to Eminor3rd's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Besides Thornton, do we have a better lefty anywhere in the organization to pitch out of the pen? All this guy has to be is better than Randy Williams. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 20, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) Best 5th starter in baseball? Team record by starter: Garcia 9-4 Danks 7-6 Buehrle 7-7 Peavy 7-7 Floyd 4-10 This should come as no surprise: Run Support Garcia 7.15 Peavy 6.34 Buehrle 6.11 Danks 5.82 Floyd 5.31

To me Berkman makes the most sense. We have very little to offer from the farm, and you don't want to trade any of our few prospects (Hudson, Flowers, Viciedo). Taking on Berkman's big salary would seem to require us to give up less. He's had a down year so far, but is clearly better than LaRoche and will be over the course of, I don't know, the next 3 seasons.

Does it matter that Quentin has sucked this season?
Vance Law replied to Vance Law's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I didn't start the thread with the intent of making the point that everything is fine with Quentin even though he has a .700 OPS while MLB average for a RF is like .800. Overall he has sucked. But point being there are varying levels and degrees of sucking. And if you're only getting x number of hits, managing to get them in situations that count definitely tempers the magnitude of his sucking. If a guy bats .200 for the whole year but bats .500 with RISP and drives in 120 runs, that's extremely productive and it kinda doesn't matter that he hit .200. Obviously that extreme example is never going to happen. Mainly, I just found it interesting how markedly better his splits have been with runners on, and even more so with runners in scoring position. Either way, the jackass should start hitting all the time. -

.314 with a 1.049 OPS now with RISP. -
Sox will try to get something out of Viciedo for as long as his bat stays hot. If he continues to kick ass, in theory he could stay after Teahen comes back but I can't see where there's room for him. His inability to walk does frighten me. He's like A.J. Uribe. Presumably he gets most of the starts at third for now, maybe a few at DH.
-
He's batting .300 with a 1.013 OPS with runners in scoring position. He has sucked, but also, he has kind of not sucked.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 01:39 AM) Two former ballplayers; Oz was much better than KW as a player and I'm sure he lets him know that on a regular basis. And Kenny is the more intelligent of the 2 and better understands the game of baseball. As a former limp-hitting, slick fielding shortstop, Ozzie erroneously seems to think that the game can be won by having the players who say "rah-rah" the most and run the hardest to first on their abundant weak groundouts. The notion that we, the fans who, supply the organization with its financial resources, owe his f***ing snot-nosed kids a job and a paycheck is ridiculous. That he would publicly criticize the organization for not doing so up to his expectations is beyond embarrassing. Shut up, you f***ing clown (Ozzie). -
White Sox select Chris Sale with #13 pick in MLB draft
Vance Law replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
Not sure what people saw about Law not liking him. FWIW, Law picked him as the #2 most MLB ready player in the draft behind Alex Wimmers. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft2010/i...%3fid%3d5225067 -
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 01:10 PM) Open for business means that anyone is on the block No it doesn't (though it definitely means that Sox fans will make that assumption) . It means whatever Williams wants it to mean, and the same players likely to go are the same players that were already likely to go at the end of the season or sooner. AJ Konerko Jenks Jones

We can't bat Quentin higher because he has underperformed (despite having 32 RBI). Kotsay deserves to bat 5th because he's a VETERAN who was once kind of good several years ago and played on the BRAVES.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) Agreed, this team on paper should be good enough to be around the .500 mark at least, but for whatever reason that just hasn't happened The starting rotation, around which the team was built and who many predicted would be among MLB's best, has the worst ERA in the AL.
