  1. 26.3BMI, 75.2 expectancy Significantly overweight, meaning you are at significant risk for obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and cancer. I gave you my stats above, & I have been able to bench near 210 3 times in about 6 minutes. 2 minutes rest between each lift. I don't use my own wt for exercising. I start & about 1/2 that wt & try to do 3 reps of 8-12 lifts. It all depends on how I feel. I don't lift to build just to remain healthy. The bench my own wt think is mostly a psychological goal. I figure as long as I can do it at least twice in the span of 5 minutes I'm as strong as my father was. To drop to normal I have to get to 199. That would put me at 24.9 BMI. To be smack in the middle of normal I have to get to 179. That's ridiculous. But the 199 seems reasonable. I imagine myself getting there as I get older when I don't expect to like food as much as I do now Assuming I don't fall victim to accidental death I expect to surpass that life expectancy with cyborg technology. I won't even be nearing the age of retirement when that becomes a reality to a longer life.
  2. None of the people in the study were ever mentioned to have taken a pledge of abstinence. That's why the study is bogus. In general none of these studies link educational acheivement (grades) to the interviews. It's a well known fact that kids in suburban schools get better grades than kids in urban schools. Generally speaking of course. I would like to see a study that breaks down actiivity along the lines of grades. It seems pretty easy to do. Just ask them what their grades are like during the interview process. These interviewers are suppose to be skilled enough to weed out lies so they should be able ot obtain reasonable data there. Then we can get a better idea of how education plays a role in the process. This was also I might add a big part of of the problem with Kinsey's data. He never categorized his data with the IQ levels of those being interviewed. We have a good idea of what the national IQ level is & we have a good idea of how that breaks down per profession & locality. This would have been a good barometer for an indicator of how well these samples represent the nation as a whole. The desire for political correctness should never taint science.
  3. He doesn't understand that stem cell research without cloning can not help Terri. The advances he's talking about are likely to come from cloning. Unless we are willing to open that pandora's box not just for Terri but for all of mankind there is no real or tangible hope for her. Her husband might want to rethink this a bit. It would be best for him to get a medical consensus opinion from futurists on Terri's condition. I'm throwing this out there because this decision has the potential to haunt him for the rest of his life. He would be better off to place that burden on the futurists than himself. With every advancement in stem research & cloning technology around the globe (cloning is not going to go away just because the govt wants it to) the decision to end Terri's life will continue to resurface. It's not going to go away. Just like advances in spinal injury research will always bring to mind C Reeve. T Shiavo will always be mentioned in neural research.
  4. When it comes to laws & public policy, yes. The lives of the many always come before the lives of the few or the one. I do have one more thing to add to this debate. We at home were talking about this today & it had dawned on me that in my circle of life we had assumed a lot on the part of her parents. Having never read anything to support those assumptions we've now come to the conclusion that they might not fully understand the situation. They may in fact be hoping & wishing on a miracle from God. There are cases in medical science that defy that which we know to be logical within the confines of our human knowledgebase. But Terri's brain damaged condition would not fall in that realm. The best & only hope for Terri lies 20 yrs into the future. Her parents need to know this because it is more than likely they could depart this world before Terri does. That future lies in artificial inteligence, nano-technology, & cyborg technology. It's not going to be like a switch that connects the old Terri to the new. It's going to be more like a re-birth. Any sense of memory she might have will be that of what is programmed in based on extensive interviews of family and friend. I'm sure by that time science will have mapped out that which controls our sense of taste, smell, sight, hearing, & touch. The first of course will be sight & hearing. Ten years from now even the blind & deaf will be given a chance to see & hear (for the right price). But will this person really be Terri or simply a new creation born from the memories of those who loved her? Given that it will take at least 20 yrs to realize cyborg Terri would it not make more sense to simply clone her? The cloned Terri would enjoy a better & fuller life 20 yrs from now. There are those in the scientific community who believe human DNA contains information pertaining to memories passed down from one generation to the next. The point at which you concieve life is the point at which the memories of a man & woman converge & are passed down to the child. Whether this arises in a lab or through conception. There is no substantial data to support that belief but there is enough to where research is being done in the field. But if that is true then it is possible that a clone made from Terri today could possess all of her memories up until the time she became brain damaged & her memory processes stopped. Now of course this opens a huge can of worms for the religiously devout who are laboring tirelessly to save Terri. If I were to tell them this I doubt very much they would be open to the idea of cloning Terri. If I were to tell them this I doubt very much they would understand that cyborg Terri will be a result of collective inteligence & most likely would never experience an independant thought again. Cloning is against the law, & cyborg Terri at best will be a shell of a human being capable of all 5 senses, memory processing, etc. but it will all be artificial. If she has any personality at all it will be based on what her family tells us about her & sophisticated algorithms designed to create a sense of spontaneity in her actions. It's unlikely that science will unlock our emotional framework in that time. That which makes us angry, laugh, cry, fear, etc. Cyborg Terri will probably never feel that again. She will only mimic it. It's our opinion then that if this was made clear to her parents they to would give up the fight. Michael's intentions are not going to change Terri's state. A miracle from God is all that can do that in the short term. We can not govern society waiting on miracles from God. With all due respect to Terri's parents it's time to let her go. I would prefer that they administer a lethal injection based on what we know. There is enough left of her brain to where her respiratory, circulatory, & digestive systems are functioning on their own. It is possible she could experience a sense of pain during starvation. That's the last thing she deserves.
  5. http://www.yahoo.com/_ylh=X3oDMTEwdnZjMjFh...gtY3Nz/s/233570 Interesting article on the whole issue of trust & the human brain & just what researchers believe they will be able to do accomplish.
  6. Sox winning 8-5 in 6th. RON 1,2 1out for Cub.
  7. When those wishes are clearly defined by a living will I would agree. When those wishes are determined by a handful of politically motivated judges I disagree. This is clearly an example were what is fair & right is not represented by the American justice system. A grand jury would have been more preferrable.
  8. What are you talking about? I clearly linked the SEXFRIEND to someone you share intimacy with who is not your spouse. How is that either ignorant or offensive? Life-partner does not work. There is nothing in the poll assuming that either the spousal or lover in one's life represents a life-long commitment to anything. It simply represents the person whom you feel the most intimate about in your life today. LOVER would have been more appropriate.
  9. You can look at any group of domestic violence or DCFS statistics in the nation & you will find that parental abuse (beating, neglect, stealing, sexual, etc.) is far less prevalent than spousal abuse. No one is saying abuse doesn't exist for either. But in comparison to the population as a whole spousal abuse is far more prevalent. If you were to expand this to guardians (someone raising kids) to lovers(spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends) the gap becomes even greater.
  10. Perv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was trying to be NON-GENDER BIAS! Replace it with GIRLFRIEND OR BOYFRIEND! I probably should have used LOVER. I just didn't want to leave the single people out of the poll. It's assumed that you love the person at least in this poll.
  11. C'mon SS. You can't possibly beleive that. There are no statistics or polls or anything I'm aware of to support that. Let's just say there are certainly parents out there who love their kids less than they should. And there are certainly parents out there who use their kids as tools to get what they want (dreams fullfilled, money, etc.). But I think by & large that number is small. Many more parents get their kids to play just so the kid is active. They let the kid try as many sports as they want in hopes that one will stick. It's best to continue this in the other thread. It is related to Schiavo but it shouldn't dominate the thread.
  12. This is spawn of the Schiavo thread but it really deserves it's own. We all have different experiences in life & I think that will definitely play a factor in the answer to this question. What would be helpful is to post how many times you've been engaged to someone. I think this is a less-intrusive question then asking how many times someone was married. I contend that most Americans trust their parents with their well-being (matter of life, health, financial security, etc) than their spouses. There are obvious exceptions: you're married to a doctor, or you're married to a financial analyst. So try to answer the poll question with respect to not just your experience but what you know from other's experience & the things you've read or heard. I did not marry my highschool sweetheart & experienced quite a few painful times in my life before arriving to where I am today. She didn't either. That leaves us both with painful memory scars for life. But you don't dwell on that. You cheerish everyday you have together. The path has made us more compromising to one another. At the same time the scars prepare you to where if she came home & said I met someone else you wouldn't be surprised. That's the painful road of reality & when you consider that you are more likely to experience divorce than to remain married to the same person it's one that most people share. The road to marriage makes you understand that when two people fall in love no one else really exists. When you have fallen in love several times in life the idea of it being life-long erodes for you. You cheerish the time you have more. You lose the expectation it will last forever. Having some acquaintenances in the psych business they will tell you that's sound advice. In any case, my personal circle of friends & loved ones coupled with national statistics & the stories I've read concludes for me that most Americans like myself trust the person that brought them into this world &/or brought them up in this world more than the person they sleep with.
  13. Let's just say I didn't marry my high school sweetheart & therefore wasn't spared reality along the way. I'm not alone in this either. I've talked to other people on the issue of trust in their relationships. They take it only so far. As for it being a problem, marriage statistics alone would strongly suggest you are nieve. Generally speaking it's more likely for you to experience divorce at least once in your lifetime than to remain married to the same person for life. Generally speaking no person is going to sacrifice more for your well-being in your lifetime than your parents. You will realize this the day you become one. In any case it's a very good poll question & probably deserves it's own thread. It'd be interesting to see what the results were like at Fox, CNN, & MSNBC.
  14. AJP has not proven to be injury prone to where "risking" Burke being the starter is a big concern. Matchups are more important in the ALC which features some of the very best LHers in the majors.
  15. I'd like to offer another scenario if I may. Oakland won a WS with the bash-brothers. They were never brothers but there was a kinship felt between them. They are now tainted. Frank & Koney could be the new bash-brothers the next 3 yrs. Koney has said everything right this year towards that endeavor. What would commercial spots of Frank & Koney together be worth to the ChiSox & MLB in general? Koney is a proven star at the Cell so there's no point in justifying his worth there. His weakness is on the road but consider these numbers: 2000 road: Frank 79G, 309/923. Koney 71G 305/867 2001 road: Frank 7G, 261/1002. Koney 79G 266/794 2002 road: Frank 74G, 240/706. Koney 77G 318/889 2003 road: Frank 73G, 249/833. Koney 67G 223/670 2004 road: Frank 37G, 274/892. Koney 77G 239/708 Koney's worse seasons came with the bad foot (03), & when Frank was on the DL (01, 04). In those seasons where Frank was healthy & played nearly as many games as Koney, Koney produced good road numbers. Which means if the Sox make a commitment to Frank & can keep him healthy they will get the best out of Konerko. As a pkg'd deal you're probably looking at 70-80HR, 280-290A, 200RBI, 110R for about 20M/yr. Compare that to any other combination of 20M/yr around the league. I think it represents a good buy.
  16. This about one person who is brain IMPAIRED being denied an opportunity for a better life in a cyborg future. Big difference. She's not brain dead. Brain dead people suffer deterioration of the organs. That's not Terri. If at any time in my life I was in Terri's situation I would want my Mom & Dad to make the decision to end my life over my spouse. I trust them more. That's just the reality of the world we live in.
  17. Wow! That judge risks being held in contempt in his latest decision. Is that sufficient grounds for impeachment? This death-dealer might have wanted to take a step back in that decision. Even the ACLU is not sure what step to take next. Person's incapable of spoken & written testimony have appeared before Congress comm before. It's not something new. In any case I don't think any one is going to risk being held in contempt on a life & death issue to pull the tube. I think they've accomplished pretty much what they wanted. If they get Greer impeached in the process all the power to them. Very clever
  18. I look at Canseco a little differently than maybe some of you. It doesn't matter to me what he thought in 2002. His book brought the matter to the mainstream media's attention & that brought it to Congress' attention. Before his book the anti-doping institute could barely get someone to answer a phone call on this comm. For that alone Canseco deserves some honorable recognition. Going forward it's all about who has the most to lose. Since he's presently on probation in the state of FL that's definitely Canseco. He probably needs to do more good works in this issue than any one else. Next would have to be Mac. He's still a HOF candidate & he needs to do as much as he can to bolster that. Thirdy is Sosa. His HR totals when he hangs it up should make him a candidate as well. Palmy really doesn't have much to lose either way so I think he seems genuinely concerned about the issue now.
  19. The luv handles vs pot belly thing on men I think is mostly genetic. Some men have pots but no handles, some have handles but no pots, most have some pots & some handles. That's why in men you look at chest size vs waist size & BMI as a better indicator. The chest size is a good representation of bone structure & muscle mass. I think Steff's agreeing with me that for woman it's probably hips vs waist & BMI. The hips on a woman are a good representation of bone structure & muscle mass. In general as you enter the 30's & beyond it's best to be more considered about working out to increase blood flow through the heart, arteries, & other organs than building muscle mass or losing weight. I'll take great circulation over a few extra pds any day.
  20. That's clever. You're move death-dealers. Putting aside the rights of Terri's parents to provide Terri a better life afforded to her in a cyborg future this case sure is working a lot of technicalities through the court which I think is good for the system as a whole. This too will go unchallenged & the courts will have to rule whether person's in near-vegatative states can be subpeonaed. I'm betting they rule in favor. I recall a jury trial I served on where a man who was incapable of speech & writing appeared before the court as a witness to the damage he suffered when he was hit by a train. I'm sure there are many similar precedents across the nation of witnesses for both the defense & prosecution appearing before the court incapable of giving any written or spoken testimony. Their physical state is considered their testimony.
  21. I want to squash this in the butt right now. Career wise Koney is betw a 750-780OPS player on the road. He's had a few years > 800OPS on the road but most of his years are in the mid 700 range. At the Cell you can expect no less than 850-880OPS.
  22. I'm not sold yet the 6th pen guy will be a LH. vs RH: Politte, Herm, Shingo vs LH: Marte, Vizc, Shingo It's pretty balance in that respect. I would say Cotts & Walker have the edge because Marte is showing signs of getting more RH's out this year. If he can regain his 2003 form he's going to own the setup role all by himself.
  23. This thread refuses to die Now that we're on to BMI I just want to add a few things. Don't become a slave to this number. It's not a one size fits all. I have a BMI that fluctuates around 25. I am 6'3" 210#. I have a 46-48in chest, 36-37in waist, & 36in inseam. Am I overweight? Everyone who knows me thinks of me as being thin. All of us have fat & as we get older the biggest battle is the stomach & lats (luv handles). I think that applies to both sexes. Your metabolism is like a big oven. When you're young it runs at very high temps than can burn fat quickly. As you get older the temp keeps dropping & you have to run the oven longer to burn the same amount of fat. As a general rule for real men if your chest size is 25% bigger than your waist size you're not overweight. For real women it's probably a similar function between hips & waist size but don't quote me on this. By definition real men are those men who can at least bench their own wt 3 times
  24. It is pyshologically impossible in today's world to remain alive with a feed tube having no brain capacity whatsoever. While you write a post the majority of your brain is working in a capacity to control the various systems of your body. That has little to do with what you think, feel, say, or do & everything to do with keeping you alive. Terri's organs are in good shape because her neural network is functioning properly. That means most of her brain capacity is there & the ability of her brain to send & receive messages down her spine & out to the various systems of her body is working fine. But that area of her brain which processes sensory input & output (sight, hearing, speech, motor functions) is not. The best analogy I can think of is that of a modern car. The parts are all in good shape but the chip that control the motor functions of the car (ignition, braking, steering) is fried. Would you junk the car, by-pass the chip, or replace the chip? I think the last thing you would do is junk the car. In this case you can't replace the chip so the only thing that exists is to by-pass it. We don't have the technology to do that now but we will in the future. Try to remember that Terri is not a spinal injury patient like Reeves. Those patients loose the ability of the brain to control the maintenance of the body's organs. That usually results in a slow process of organ death. Doctors do all they can to prevent that from happening but it's usually inevitable. Terri is in much better condition body-wise then them. That part of her brain is working. Organ death is not a high risk.
  25. See the thread referring to Davis being traded. A "no comment" by KW usually means "you're gawn!" Burke represents a good RH bat off the bench. One of the team's weaknesses. I agree it's asking a lot of Uribe to backup Crede at 3B. The Sox risk burning him out with that extra playing time & responsibility & that's best to be avoided at all costs. Uribe will play 3B only if the Sox get a new SS. But after Uribe all other options are ill-experienced: Harris, Burke, Ozuna, Valdez - all green when it comes to playing 3B. I think KW is probably hoping a team with a player offering more experience at 3B is interested in Davis. The bat skills of this player are no where near as important as his glove. A solid showing by Davis in CL play might get the ChiSox such a player. I think KW will be looking all season to upgrade 3B if Crede continues to struggle.
