  1. More seriously, I think Viciedo is going to look a lot better this year. My minor league guy to break out is still Chris Beck.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 11:17 AM) Nobody here expects it, just that it's a mistake by Golden Boy Rick. I disagree with what you say but will defend to the death your right to say it.
  3. Chris Cotillo straight up says "it's not going to happen" and the response is "oh look, it might happen!"
  4. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) They've never really been in a position to. They usually are competitive and not in a position to. 07 for example, they were bad but in 08 they were competitive again. I can't remember if we signed anyone in 08 to one year deals, but we were competitive and we didn't really need to rebuild and flip players. That's true too. Still, there's no point in risking it. You spend $13 million on Santana (or $10 or anything) and then you hope he comes out and has a good year. If he doesn't, you eat the cost and don't get anything.
  5. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) What about the idea of signing Santana to a one year deal with the idea of trading him at the deadline? He would lose eligibility of being offered the qualifying offer next offseason for a package of prospects that would be closer to helping than a second round pick. It would also help his value (if he pitches good). Obviously, the only risk is money and possibilty and second round pick. When was the last time the White Sox signed a player to a 1 year deal and dealt him at the deadline? The last one I can seriously remember is Kenny Lofton.
  6. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 08:44 AM) If they can award MVPs, Cy Youngs, Manager of the Year, ROY, etc. during a strike shortened year, I have no problem saying the White Sox won the division that year even though noboby "officially" won it and there were no playoffs. I will say that the Braves made the playoffs 14 consecutive times, but I will not say they won the division 15 consecutive times, because they did not.
  7. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 08:42 AM) bigotry is stupid, inside and out I asked my friend what he thought Jeff Ireland would ask Sam. His response: "Do you want to blow me right now?"
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 06:25 PM) I understand it isn't how he acts, that's why I found the comments funny. Some guy called in to every show today to make the same bad shower comment. People think he is going to be walking around the locker room trying to convert other players. This will be his profession, not his personal life There are some people who are just too stupid. Could you imagine hearing that? "Hey, uhh, sorry to ask this, but you have a really nice package. Do you think you would want to be gay?"
  9. Safe to say I wouldn't care about getting naked in front of total strangers regardless of knowing whether or not they are gay.
  10. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 08:23 AM) Can you really count the strike out season since nobody won anything? they definitely would have won the division but ultimately that season is lost. They finished in 1st place. It was an empty win, but they definitely won the division.
  11. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 06:29 PM) I think any GM in Hahn's position would have dealt the players he did I really don't think this could be further from the truth. Why didn't Terry Ryan deal Glen Perkins then?
  12. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 05:52 AM) 3 Division titles in almost 20 years since the AL central was formed. Truly, truly sad. 4. They just didn't make the playoffs for one of them because the playoffs didn't happen.
  13. QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 09:55 PM) I don't think this is a criteria when choosing who had the best offseason. It certainly should be. The Cardinals didn't have to do s*** and they would have had a good offseason. They had like 1 hole. That they're #1 discredits this list quite a bit. I honestly think the Sox had the best offseason out of any team in the majors.
  14. I don't think either the Garcia nor the McCarthy trades had anything to do with the Williams-Guillen feud. They weren't really feuding at that point. Most of it started with Thome/Kotsay.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 03:58 PM) Now that Tex mentions it, this would be a good reason for me not to go see a Yankees game if he came back. I think you are in the minority though. Last year, his first game back was against the Sox. They drew 27,948. The very next night, Rodriguez's 2nd game back, that attendance fell to 23,826, and the 3rd was 25,707. Mind you, all of this was coming off a 10 game losing streak with the Sox record at 40-69. Some has to do with the Yankees, but I think stating it's all because of the Yankees is naive too.
  16. But Alex Rodriguez is a guy who MLB and several others at one time tried to trumpet as the best player of all time and the superhero to defeat the villainous Barry Bonds for the all time home run record. And then PEDs came to the forefront, and suddenly Rodriguez is vilified. Simply put, I think that alone is going to sell a significant amount of tickets. You can bet people will want to boo him.
  17. If he were actually made available for trade, this is a move I would support.
  18. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) LOL Kenny committed rape in the second Freddy deal and in the McCarthy deal. Hahn held onto Gavin Floyd until he got hurt & lost all value. And the Peavy return was quality for what Peavy was but this wasn't the "haul" type on paper, far from it. And Texas? Really? Rios was a salary dump for Abreu money. They had a dollar and only took fifty cents back. Gavin Floyd made 5 starts for the White Sox while Rick Hahn was the GM. Not sure why you're using that against him. He wouldn't have gotten a real big return for him anyways. I was also perfectly fine with them just giving Rios up, so getting back a guy like Garcia for him was a win.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) You know you had a bad game when I look at the final score the next day and saw you only lost by nearly 50 points: http://www.nba.com/games/20140209/PHILAC/g...nfo.html?ls=slt They were down 52-15 early in the 2nd.
  20. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Feb 9, 2014 -> 12:50 PM) Starting off our eurotrip with a 4 day whiskey tour in Scotland, including two days on the Isle of Islay. Cannot wait for this trip. That makes me jealous
  21. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) Another determinant of draftee success is minor league instruction. Anyone gonna argue we've been any good at that? Pitchers, perhaps. Definitely not hitters. No, it's been absolutely brutal. Guys come up and look absolutely clueless.
  22. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) I mean...no matter what, KW was the captain of the ship that yielded this result. Say what you want about our ranking indicating that he was bad, but there definitely is NO evidence that he could have been great at building up a farm system. What would anyone point to that was excellent about the Sox' drafting under his management? I don't think I've disagreed with any of this, but he was running the minor league system when it was the #1 ranked minor league system in the game in 2000. It fell apart rather quickly, but the guy knows talent. He did commit a ton of his resources to the MLB team - hence the least amount of spending - and Reinsdorf was pretty much unwilling in general to go overslot. Those are probably your two biggest reasons for the lack of minor league system, with "Williams trades prospects" 3rd on that lists.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) I am talking entire draft. I don't think Porcello vs. Poreda is the difference between good and bad the past 13 seasons, but it is one example of paying over slot for a better player. Porcello may be really good one day, Poreda never will be, but if you recall, the White Sox were really high on him. He was the first poster child for the not taking the "safe" pick. He made his debut in Milwaukee. I was pretty excited to see him pitch. That didn't last long. I agree with pretty much all of this. I've never been one to get into rankings either, but the Sox were incredibly poor. There are a number of different reasons for the poor minor league system though too, and I think it's hard to say one of them is more important than the other.
