  1. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) Hasn't stopped Stark or Badler from doing so. That's fine, they've been wrong before.
  2. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) Has the Reinsdorf thing ever been confirmed? It's been rumored for awhile but i don't think there's anything official on it. No, but there's enough smoke there to reasonably assume it to be true. Being a private entity, they don't have to disclose the members or numbers or anything to the public, but there have been quite a few reports from people that know people within the White Sox organization on here. I think I recall reading that one of the big guys at RC Cola was on the board for the Chicago White Sox, but that's merely hearsay and dot connecting from like 5-7 years ago.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:18 AM) Sox are owned by a bunch of people, their combined assets likely is equal to or exceeds the Ricketts family. Reinsdorf is a figurehead, he (unless its changed) is not even the single biggest owner. This is how I understand it as well.
  4. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:18 AM) There has also been a ton of speculation that they are the favorites. I've seen them, the Cubs, the DBacks, and the Yankees, as well as the Sox, Blue Jays, Rangers, Angels, Dodgers, and others showing interest. I think calling anybody a favorite at this point is ridiculous.
  5. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) Yeah I've been feeling the Mariners are a serious player as well. Not only do they have the location/history thing with Japan but Jack Z is playing for his job in Seattle. He's not going to flinch if he thinks Tanaka is the piece to put them over the top. King Felix-Tanaka-Iwakuma-Walker-Hultzen/Paxton has the potential to be the best rotation in the bigs. There has been a ton of speculation that the Mariners are out of money
  6. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) "Involved" and "seriously involved" are the same thing if they don't end up signing him. Why would you think KW would want the story ran? Because they're serious OR to plant seeds in the fans' minds OR to draw attention away from someone OR something else. Please note that it can be all 4 or it can just be the "something else." Theo has done nothing but blow smoke up people's asses since getting that job. I don't believe anything he says anymore.
  7. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 10:57 AM) Then why not sign with the cubs? Maybe he's heard about how s***ty they are and that they're incredibly racist towards Asians.
  8. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) I see no reason why he would want to play for the Sox personally. Not saying it's a factor but Seattle, Texas, Boston, and NYY have Japanese players on their team. I would give them a better chance than the SOX at this point. Well then he has a chance to be THE main Japanese guy in the 3rd largest market in America. That seemsl ike a pretty good reason.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 10:29 AM) VERY slim chance unless for some reason this guy wants to play for the Sox. We can have some money available if need be, but is this the right way to spend it? I dont know. "Some" money, even like $15 mill, doesn't seem like it's going to be nearly enough. I'm happy to see they're showing interest, but I'm not going to care if they miss out on him.
  10. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 10:17 AM) Rock, you got anything on Tanaka? He's already said that there's virtually no shot. There's nothing wrong with due diligence, and they'll give their pitch. It's likely Tanaka goes to the highest offer and that's not likely to be the Sox.
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) Jurassic Park wins forever. I still have to go with Wizard of Oz. The original obviously.
  12. http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-ind...amp;submitter=1 Sort by OPS Go from 6 to 12
  13. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 04:02 PM) I'm not saying they weren't, but throughout last season conflicting reports would come out about who was favorite and teams that worked him out. one example: http://www.csnbayarea.com/giants/report-gi...n-slugger-abreu CSN Bay Area calls the local team the favorite to sign him. Instead, they weren't even among the finalists. This still doesn't say that the White Sox had little chance of signing him. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 08:22 AM) There are some interesting nuggets about Tanaka in Michael Sneed's Sun Times column today. I don't know if it's Kenny being Kenny or what but it's definitely interesting. http://www.suntimes.com/news/sneed/2484383...ll-of-fame.html Eh, I think probably just talking to him. He was in Australia to check on prospects plus probably as some sort of sit down meeting with a couple guys as there was a fight in a "winter" league down there. Same thing was probably happening in the Dominican. In LA, he could have been meeting with prospects or meeting with Tanaka and company. Doesn't necessarily mean they are going to make a move, but possibly that they're considering it. It's a really good sign, especially seeing Williams doing this because it puts an end to the speculation that Williams is doing the work and Hahn is merely there in title only.
  14. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 11:16 PM) Everyone can just cheer for Iowa State. Dreamiest coach in America QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 08:10 AM) Still just two of us I think. I have a soft spot for them. They were close enough to school that I dig them plus you have to like "underdog who is no longer the underdog" type of stories.
  15. This is all still so surreal. Best day since the blackout game and the happiest I've been as a sports fan since October 26th during that glorious year.
  16. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) Nelson had great number against Thomas. Nelson was just a tough SOB to begin with. It really was too bad that the Sox didn't get him until his stuff was done.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) ESPNChiSox: Frank suggests his production might have led players to use PEDs. Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 15m Thomas on PEDs: "I was one of those guys who made a few guys go in that direction because of [my] size and strength." It's impossible to disagree with that.
  18. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 02:46 PM) It would mean $10M each year if he is kept or $10 million this year and $6 million next year if he is cut. The real question (for this season) is do you want to pay $2 million to have Julius on the team? You're paying him $8 million to go away regardless. That's exactly it. If the contract is almost 100% guaranteed, your opportunity cost for getting rid of him is dumb. If you can save substantial money, then it makes a lot of sense. Same thing is going on with Steve Johnson now. Beat writers and (idiot) fans are talking about cutting Steve. This year, if the Bills cut Steve Johnson, they'd save like $100,000, and you take on a hit next year on top of that too. If they cut him next year, they save $8 million. In those instances, you may as well just keep the guy.
  19. QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 03:14 PM) Fly into Albany, drive from there. That will be the easiest, but it would all depend on cost. Also, whether I can actually do it too.
  20. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) Me too, only Utah is even further and by the time it rolls around I think I'm going to be living back in Seattle again. That's a loooooong haul. I definitely wouldn't be driving. Maybe fly into Buffalo or New York and drive from there, but Cooperstown is like 23 hours away from me. That is most definitely too far to drive.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 02:43 PM) US Cellular Field to the MLB Hall of Fame is 11 hours and 28 minutes worth of a drive according to google maps. Who's in? I am strongly considering right now.
  22. Seaver really had an amazing career. Only twice in 20 seasons did he have an ERA above 4
  23. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) Bagwell was almost hitting .370 that year. I wonder what his final numbers would have looked like if there wasn't a strike. Same goes for Frank. Frank also had a 205 wRC+ that year, which is a figure you just don't see anymore these days. For comparison, even with Cabrera's great season last year and the lower scoring run environment, his wRC+ was 192. There remain questions as to whether or not Bagwell was clean. Still, those two OPS+ were the highest by clean players since Mickey Mantle in 1957 (221). The only other names you find on that list after 1900 are Ruth, Gehrig, Hornsby, and Williams (also Bonds and McGwire, but they were obvious users). Safe to say that Frank had an incredible peak.
  24. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) OPS+ of 212 in 94. Holy Jesus. Bagwell was at 213
  25. QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 01:55 PM) I'm not going to link some of his tweets, but holy s***, Wayne Randazzo is a f***ing idiot. LOL "Steroids weren't illegal!" ORLY? Wonder if the DEA would agree with that.
