It must be said - Hawk Harrelson has to go

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 04:11 PM) Of course Hawk can't make an intelligent response to sabremetrics because he doesn't study them . Much like myself especially defensively, I don't understand how defense can be measured taking all things into consideration. Anticipation can't be measured or positioning or response to the ball off the bat , poor routes that a fielder can make up for with pure speed, how an outfielder plays a long deep fly ball as opposed to how he plays a line drive and those same things off a RH bat or LH bat. A defender can be good at some of those things but not all and until you measure the kind of fly balls he's tracking how can you accurately measure his defense ? If a teams pitching is poor could be someone rated as a poor outfielder is seeing an inordinate amount of hard hit balls as opposed to a good pitching staff and routine plays or has a good coaching staff who positions you better . Or maybe I have no idea like Hawk You are asking the right questions atleast. A lot of this is taken into account. I'd explain it, but I'd inevitably leave a few things out or explain something incorrectly. The best way to do this is to insert a FanGraphs link and let them explain http://www.fangraphs.com/library/defense/uzr/ -
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) Title game says otherwise, as does his 40. Notre Dame allowed 1119 rushing yards all year and 3.2 yards per rush. They allowed 265 for 5.9 yards a rush in the title game. Some of that is Te'o's fault; not all of that is Te'o's fault. Vontaze Burfict ran a 5.00+ last year, went undrafted, and was a monster for the Bengals. Brandon Spikes ran a 5.00 40 time. LBs simply don't run 40 yards in a straight line very often.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) I think it's: Snodgress, Beck, Riezno, Castro. I don't believe there is much room for debate either. I think Beck's early numbers and reports push him in front of Riezno. Agree, and, in fact, I don't think you can even compare Rienzo and Castro to Snodgress and Beck, but maybe that's just my bias towards Rienzo as a reliever long-term. A guy with a fastball/breaking ball combo without much offspeed is so much more likely to end up in the bullpen, and he's got a legit chance to be really successful down there.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 02:46 PM) Adrian Gonzalez is by no means in the same category as Ethier and Crawford. A virtual lock for 155+ games and 100+ RBIs. Lifetime line: .295/.372/.507 and he is a gold glove fielder. A gold glove fielder playing a non-vital defensive position making $21+ million for the next 6 seasons. To me, he's in the exact same boat as both of them.
-
I guess it depends on what order you want too. I think no matter what, I'm putting Snodgress first. Then, depending upon whether it's ceiling or likeliness to find success as a starter or value or next call up or whatever else, it changes a lot. I think Rienzo and Castro are both worthwhile callups for a spot start or two, but Rienzo could also be a nice arm out of the pen. Beck has the most long-term potential to me and is likeliest to stick as a starter as well. Just generally speaking, Snodgress, Beck, Rienzo, Castro.

Ryan Levebvre or whatever is proving how much he knows about baseball. I feel the same way about Bert Blyleven and Dick Bremer when they talk about standings in April. Nobody gives a f***.
-
Well they could play Ethier at 1B too if they traded Gonzalez. I mean, jesus, which overpriced, overrated hitter do you want, Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, or Adrian Gonzalez?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 02:28 PM) Or it could be the Bears bluffing in order to try and make the Vikings trade up to get him. Anybody who believes anything anybody says today is silly. I've been following the Bills pretty extensively, and, depending on which reporter you talk to, they like Nassib, Barkley, Manuel, or Austin with the 8th pick, but they're also looking to trade down.
-
There is also literally no reason why Los Angeles would trade Ethier at this point.

QUOTE (SexiAlexei @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 12:37 PM) Your World vs Notre Dame crap is ridiculous. How about because he's too small for MLB, too slow for the cover 2 scheme, and without the name attached he wouldn't be a first round talent. Too small to be a MLB is like saying Rickey Henderson was too fast to steal bases. He's the PERFECT size to be a MLB. You know how I know? The best MLB of our time - even considering he was overrated in his later years - is Ray Lewis. He was listed 6'0'', 240 lbs. Manti Te'o, who you say is "too small," is listed at 6'1 (1/4),'' 241 lbs. BUT TOO SMALL He seems like a pretty diverse player who is quick and strong enough. He doesn't seem like a superstar, but I think he'll be fine in whatever scheme he ends up in.
-
I really don't understand why you'd be upset about Te'o. I think Te'o's fine, smart, heady player who is ultra-motivated to succeed and who is more talented than Tebow, who was the last mega distraction to come out.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) Hopefully they pick the right one. Otherwise you are stuck with Kevin Kolb. It's OK, Kevin Kolb is here to win a Superbowl

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 11:55 AM) Isn't it just obvious that it's a control thing with Hawk? He wants baseball to stay the way he played it where nobody had information. Since it's not what he had, it's worse in his mind. Please retire. Go back to Orlando, and play Bay Hill everyday. "Harrelson teeing up at the Par 4 6th, looks like he was a 3-iron to hit the short fairway. Good thing too, he only hits the fairway 42% of the time with a 5-wood or bigger and he's terrible in the rough with a 31% recovery rate. Using the iron on Par 4s has worked for him too as he hits the fairway 83% of the time and is on in regulation 72% of the time." -
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) I still think the Bills are gonna take Geno Smith if he is there at 8. I don't think they like Smith at all. I think their top 3 are Nassib, Barkley, and Manuel. I think Smith has the highest ceiling out of any QB in the draft, but he's got the second lowest floor too (next to Manuel), and I don't think he'd handle playing in Buffalo very well.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) The reason Mark Buehrle has had a successful career is that he's got the mind of a child? Hmm, I bet there's some advanced metrics out there that could better explain why Buehrle is effective with an 86 MPH fastball. Good control, throws groundballs, plays good defense, keeps teams from stealing bases against him, 4 above average pitches (none of which are his 86 MPH fastball). You want me to keep going? -

"I think Moneyball is bulls***" Have you ever read it? "NO" /facepalmtoChina Moneyball is not ABOUT sabermetrics. Moneyball != sabermetrics. Beane USES sabermetrics IN Moneyball, but they are not one in the same. I feel like a broken record. -
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 11:18 AM) Bears and Vikings fighting for who takes Manti Te'o. This is already a great draft. I've never seen a draft with this many questions leading into draft day. There is a lot of talent in this draft but I don't know how many pro bowlers are in it. There are so many smoke screens too - it's unreal. I like the Jets and Bills little quarrel too. BILLS WILL TAKE AUSTIN TO SCREW WITH JETS JETS WILL TAKE NASSIB TO SPITE HIM HA, NO WE WON'T BUT WE WILL LATER JAGS SAY NOPE LOL WE'LL TAKE HIM AT 33 I'm hoping Austin gets to 8 and the Bills trade down with the Rams and pick up 16 and 22. Then you can take Nassib/Manuel at 16 (because I am already calling the Jets bluff - there's no way they can afford to use a top 13 pick on a QB) and either trade down with Atlanta at 22 or take BPA, probably a receiver.

I guess it also depends to what extent you want to declare something as sabermetrics anymore and which is traditional. Hawk trashes sabermetrics but he uses OBP, which has been tracked forever but was only given the name and used by sabermeticians in like the 70s and 80s. Personally, I don't even consider OBP/SLG/OPS to be saber stats any more, but that was how they originated. In 15-20 years, we may not be talking about UZR/150 as a saber stat either. More and more, you see that sabermetric websites focus so much more on pitch location and angle and the repeatability of mechanics, and they can look at that from release points of the baseball by pitchers and graph them out to figure this out. -
