QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) 30 years, 5 postseasons, and 1 World Series. That simply isn't good enough. 30 years is a lot of time to judge a team too. You are talking, at a bare minimum, 5 generations of players. Regardless, during that time frame, I count only 9 teams who have, without a doubt, had a better run - the Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Braves, Phillies, Angels, Twins, Red Sox, and Tigers. The teams you can argue for are the Reds, Mets, Indians, Blue Jays, Rays, Orioles, Tigers, Athletics, and Diamondbacks. The only team that has actually won a World Series (2 in fact) that I have listed below the Sox is the Marlins, and that's because outside of two high-flying seasons, that team has been a perennial bottom feeder. I'd say, at best, they're a top 10 team in the MLB over the past 30 years and, at worst, they are middle of the pack. I also feel as though this franchise has been a bit snakebitten regarding big moves, but that's neither here nor there.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) Reinsdorf cares about making profit and being ultra-loyal to people that either do a bad job, or were part of 2005. I'm glad 2005 happened, but in my opinion, what is happening now and in the last few years is a result of hanging on to 2005 too long. You mean like how he fired Rick Hahn, only 1 player - Paul Konerko - remains in the organization from the 2005 world Series, he relieved the only manager that has won a World Series in Chicago in his lifetime AND THEN traded him to Miami? Oh, and you speak of him being almost overly-loyal, yet he promoted Rick Hahn to GM not to show his loyalty but because he was the most deserving man for the job according to virutally EVERY national publication. He's let go of players and coaches simply because he realizes when it is time for a change. He is an incredibly loyal man because loyalty breeds security which takes pressure off which allows for people to do their job. When people feel pressured and have low job security, they tend to fail more often. Reinsdorf has been perfectly fine as an owner and CEO.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) I think what he's saying is, it's now a Bill Wirtz-like waiting game. Except that comparing Jerry Reinsdorf to Bill Wirtz is a bit like comparing a kitten to a hungry tiger.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) Hawkins is a top prospect. Carlos Sanchez is a fringe utility player. I'm not worried about them rushing him either, because he's not a prospect worth protecting in my opinion. You are literally the only person I've seen who follows baseball that considers Carlos Sanchez a fringe utility player. He's 20 years old and hitting .300+ with good plate discipline at very advanced levels. He's constantly mentioned among the top prospects in an ever-improving White Sox system and has been as high as #61 in the game lists I've seen.

Buehrle to face Sox for the first time...
witesoxfan replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I put virtually no stock into wins, but Mark Buehrle has won double digit games every year of his career, save 2000 when he was only up part time. Also, the only two times he's won fewer than 13 were 2006 (4.99 ERA) and 2007 (terrible team). Barring something bad happening to him, he's probably going to get to 200 at the end of next season. -
QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) He won't likely be able to resume drawing walks until he demonstrates to opposing pitchers that they need to pitch more carefully to him. At this point, it makes more sense for them to just pitch to him. Wouldn't you? Well you keep pitching him over the plate an eventually he goes on a stretch like this.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 01:30 PM) Yes, this is actually a major league lineup: Chris Coghlan RF Juan Pierre LF Placido Polanco 3B Greg Dobbs 1B Justin Ruggiano CF Rob Brantly C Adeiny Hechavarria SS Donovan Solano 2B Alex Sanabia P If it weren't for Giancarlo, I would take the under on 500 runs scored for the Marlins

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) I literally went full anti-gun racist. They called me into chambers with both lawyers and asked me questions and it got ridiculous. It was a federal trial that went on for months. It dealt with Barry Bonds's biceps I take it

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 11:39 AM) And I'm saying he will probably hit around .200 with around 40 homers and probably over 200 strikeouts. Just like last year. Probably a little worse than last year, but it's 50 AB. It's amazing how everyone comes to conclusions so quickly. Last year when everyone thought he was so valuable, from 4/8-4/17 he was 5-34 with 1 walk. You are the last person I thought I'd see defending Dunn to any extent, but I agree completely with everything you're talking about.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 10:33 AM) She flat out refuses. I've asked her time and time again to just go talk to someone. and all I get is that they'll put her on medication and she doesnt want to take those evil medicines. They only *require* medication in the most extreme of circumstances, which this does not sound like. They will recommend it on a lot of occasions, but there are most definitely steps that can be taken through counseling alone that can help reduce these sorts of episodes and increase quality of life.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) thanks. Inn between her spurts of crazy, she's actually a very nice and caring person. then she goes batspit nuts. I mean this is in the most positive possible way, but has she had a psychiatric evaluation?

I have no problem dealing Peavy, but if you want positive PR, you ask Peavy first. If that's the way the season turns out - I don't think this thought has crossed anyone's mind except the eternal optimists on Soxtalk - then you essentially tell Peavy that you are going to sell off pieces this year and intend on going through a youth movement next year where you don't believe the team will compete. You state your intentions up front - we want you to make your own choice and we will respect your preference to stay even though we won't compete or we will attempt to move you to get you a World Series title and that we will accomodate to your wishes because you accomodated us.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 10:20 PM) 1. Scott Ruffcorn. 2. Aaron Poreda 3. Jason Stumm 4. Jon Gilmore 5. Jason Dellaero 6. Brent Morel 7. Joe Borchard 8. Lance Broadway 9. Kyle McCullough 10. Matt Ginter Player development remains a White Sox strength You named one player who has been drafted in the last 5 years. This post comes off as nothing more than bitter and angry. Maybe you should smile and it will brighten your day, and then you'll remember Chris Sale, Addison Reed, Nate Jones, Chris Young, Chris Carter, Gio Gonzalez, and a few others with assorted success here and there around the majors and then realize that, over the last 5 years, the White Sox developmental team has gotten quite a bit better. Or keep ruminating about failed prospects from 10 years ago, proving your entire point is to trash the White Sox system even when it's baseless projections.

Myles Jaye was, IIRC, the #9 prospect on FanGraphs top 10 ratings. Even if it's only one publication, I can't say that nobody saw him coming. He's a guy I'm going to be watching all year.

Buehrle to face Sox for the first time...
witesoxfan replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 04:21 PM) Well, it might make that upper office wince a bit. They could have signed Buerhle for what they signed Danks for Buehrle was far more expensive on a per season basis, and will make make as much in 2014 and 2015 as Danks does in 2014, 2015, and 2016. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) We think our offense is bad or inconsistent....but the Rays have it worse than the Sox. There's zero reason to pitch to Longoria. He actually had his first homer and first XB hit today. 4-9 is their worst, or one of their worst, starts ever. That's all relative. They didn't have a lead in a game for like their first 6 or 7 games 2 years ago before Dan Johnson took Matt Thornton deep in the top of the 9th. They still made the playoffs that year.

QUOTE (VAfan @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) Adam Dunn is certainly back to his horrible 2010 ways with a batting average below .200 and a major drop-off in walks from last year. I totally agree that he should be moved down in the lineup. And whatever he's doing to lower his walk total -- by being more aggressive at the plate -- isn't upping his contact rate or his hits rate. So he should just go back to being a HR/walk guy with a decent OBP. At least that way he'll make fewer outs. But the problem is not limited to Adam Dunn. The Sox have multiple guys with all-or-nothing approaches. Dayan Viciedo and Tyler Flowers, for example. And so far, Jeff Keppinger has been stinking it up as well. Why not field a lineup with all the contact guys at the top, and the thumpers at the bottom? DeAza Gillaspie Rios Konerko Ramirez Keppinger Dunn Viciedo Flowers Why not reward players who are actually hitting the baseball with higher positioning in the ilneup, and demote those who are stinking it up? If they start hitting the ball, they can move up. Lefty-righty is less important than hitting/not hitting. And these are the types of overreactions that I love this early in the year. 12 games have been played and VAFan already knows the exact problems with this team so as to fix them for the rest of the season. Also, Gillaspie's hitting 2nd based off of 27 plate appearances. In a week's worth of time, he could be down to .275, and in 2 weeks he could be back to .220 and nobody would know the difference. I do like how Tyler Flowers and his .674 OPS hits last while Konerko and his .697 OPS gets to hit cleanup. And please don't cite career history - Konerko hit .263/.333/.437/.771 in the second half last year. That's not cleanup worthy. I have no problem with the lineup today. But before drastic changes are made, how about we let them play a few games?

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) Took long enough to get back, but I was finally able to free weight barbell bench 225lbs again today! Yay! That was a long road back and should teach me to never get lazy again! I may have missed you post it elsewhere, but how long have you been working to get back to that?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 12:18 PM) It's hard for us to be worse on some of these levels. We have the lowest OBP in baseball right now of .273. Last year these same players were at .317 for the year, and that's with a .280 OBP out of 3b for the full year. The same thing can be said about Detroit's bullpen. They may not be good, but they're not going to put up a 5.59 ERA the whole year. Addison Reed can stay at 0, but Chris Sale has to come down from 5.21.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 11:04 AM) Wait. We know that? Pretty good possibility.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 09:49 AM) We just didn't even think twice. To his credit, I was just emailing with my buddy and he said it was eye-opening and they want to do 10 miles with us next weekend. That's a much better number and will be easier for them due to a shorter distance and the fact that they will be in better shape, even if only slightly.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) So the wife and I took a couple we know out on a bike ride yesterday. They aren't like huge or anything, just somewhat out of shape. We did our usual 20-miler - Prairie Path to Great Western Trail and back - seriously exactly 20 miles from our driveway. Holy crap, it's insane how out of shape people really are - given she and I are so active, the bike ride is seriously nothing. A ride that normally takes us an hour and forty minutes took two hours and fifty five minutes. They had to stop tons of times. My buddy had to walk the bike part of the way. His legs were dead. They were both completely f***ed after this effortless ride. It's nuts. It's good that they recognize this and are getting out to get back into shape. It's dumb that they thought they'd be able to keep up with someone over a 20 mile bike ride. That's the same as me saying I'd be able to keep up with someone over a 5 mile run.
