  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 05:20 PM) http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/01/17/mis...n-violent-games Video games continue to be the root of all evil. I was playing Borderlands last night and running people over with the Catch-A-Ride, blowing people apart with rocket launchers, sniping heads off, and setting people on fire with incendiary weapons. Yet, for whatever reason, I don't have any impulse to kill anybody or even hurt anybody. In fact, I never once became upset. Now, Madden or NBA 2K? A little booze in me, and the controller starts flying around the room. Even broke one.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2013 -> 09:20 AM) That didn't stop the Mariners. He can handle LF, RF, and 1B just fine. The Sox have to move someone to make room for him. The Mariners don't.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 18, 2013 -> 09:07 AM) I like everything the Browns have done. A long struggling franchise, I hope they've finally found a shot. I really like their defense, and they have some pieces on offense to go with. Cleveland sucks, go Bills
  4. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jan 18, 2013 -> 09:17 AM) Mariners re-acquired Mike Morse from Nats. Too bad we could not get him. No where to play him.
  5. Yeah, Crain has been a stud when he's been healthy
  6. First thing I thought of when I saw Trestman was "I run a complex offense. You've probably never heard of it."
  7. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 18, 2013 -> 05:32 AM) Wow
  8. QUOTE (RadioHost @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 10:32 PM) I agree but there are still some guys out there who could help the team, such as Kelly Johnson. Not saying they will get him, but it makes some sense (Johnson to Sox). He hits left handed, plays in the infield and probably could play 3rd if he had to. Has no worse of an arm than Youkilis. He's pretty mediocre defensively but, all the same, that would be a great addition.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:57 PM) http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/college-f...nd-hoax-quotes/ SI: I can call Stanford and check. They have to have some record or note that she passed. Bet he wishes he would have done that now
  10. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) It was said last year that DeAza wasn't comfy playing CF. They have said if Sanchez isn't a starter that he will start in the minors. De Aza looked great pretty much all year, and he's only going to get more comfortable as time goes on. And Angel Sanchez. Not Carlos. He can't start in the minors without the Sox acquiring him from the Angels.
  11. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 04:05 PM) He could've added a lefty hitter with speed to play CF, right now we have a guy in center who doesn't want to be there. A bullpen arm would be nice. 3B ( I don't see Keppinger as a full time player) Some decent bench players & backup C Do you mean Alejandro De Aza, DeWayne Wise, or Jordan Danks? Agree on the bullpen arm at the right price. Nothing long-term. There is plenty of talent in the minors to take up that spot as well. They offered Eric Chavez a contract worth more than the DBacks did. He wanted to play on the west coast. Unless you had your heart set on Jack Hannahan, there wasn't and isn't much left. I wouldn't mind seeing another infielder brought in to challenege Sanchez, and I'd like more depth at catcher, but otherwise, the bench is a rather small thing to argue about. All in all, those additional pieces will probably, at the most, result in about...2 wins.
  12. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:53 PM) Det upgraded their rotation and have V Mart coming back. I think Garcia will have a good season for them. Hunter will also help them at the plate & in the field If Detroit upgraded their rotation (by resigning Anibal Sanchez), then the White Sox more than upgraded their rotation (by resigning Jake Peavy and getting John Danks back). Oh, and John Danks is back. I also don't know if you still are unaware of Garcia's numbers - they seem to like him, he put up decent numbers in a cup of coffee in September, but he strikes out a lot, doesn't walk, doesn't have blazing speed, and doesn't have great power. What's he supposed to do? Hunter also had a career year last year at the age of 37 fueled by a .389 BABIP. Far more likely is Hunter returning to about a .270/.330/.420 type of season, especially considering he turns 38 in July.
  13. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:49 PM) He has had since Nov to add some key additions to the Sox, even the damn Cubs have added some good additions. When Clev/KC are outspending this offseason, something is wrong The Cubs spent $52 million on Edwin Jackson, took flyers on Scott Baker and Scott Feldman, and signed Nate Schierholtz. Anything I missed? The Indians traded away Choo and brought in Trevor Bauer, brought in Mike Aviles, spent $7 mill each on Mark Reynolds and Brett Myers, and spent $56 million on Nick Swisher. Essentially, they added Angel Sanchez, Tyler Flowers, and Adam Dunn to their lineup. The Royals traded away 4 of their best prospects for a great starting pitcher and a mediocre starting pitcher. They also traded for a guy who put up an ERA of like 5.50 last year. I'm not impressed with their overall team either. Of those, what could the Sox have done that would have been equitable and efficient but also greatly improved the team?
  14. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:39 PM) I hope you are right. Even if we have 84 wins, that won't be good enough to beat Det. So, it will be a down year. Then PK leaves after the season along with a few other key pieces. It took a minor miracle down the stretch and a dude hitting for the Triple Crown to get Detroit 88 wins last year. They may not be so lucky this time. Beyond, that, it also took an incredible collapse by the Sox for them to make it as well. Based on what I believe to be the talent level, I see about 83-85 wins. If I had to bet over or under on that, I'd take the over 100% of the time. I could easily see this team winning 90 games because I still don't think people realize how talented they are.
  15. QUOTE (bhawk99 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) The chances of the current lineup having 3 starting players that will hit under .250 possibly under .240 and even under .230 [Dunn, Beckham & Flowers] is very high. How many other contending teams have 3 every day starters with those numbers? I couldn't care less about average, except in the case of Beckham. Flowers and Dunn should walk and hit for enough power to justify their low averages. Beckham doesn't. And it also depends on what you mean by contending. There could be as many as 20 teams in contention until mid-August. My guess would be that quite a few of those have players hitting below .250, considering the league average last year was .255.
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) Oh Mr. Klosterman, thank you for always getting it right. Honestly, in my opinion, the best summary of the audacity of public reaction here. Anybody who is upset over this is taking someone else's life too seriously. I'm not upset at all. I merely find it to be an absolutely fascinating human interest story with an incredible amount of loose ends and plot twists that I am squirming in my seat. This absolutely is better than a movie and it's actually happening in real life.
  17. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) I will chill about the Sox, when we add some additions to help us beat Det Then who? Don't just say "add some," suggest what they hell they need that is available. There is virtually nothing available right now that is worth the money and Hahn and company are acting wisely to sit idly by while prices either drop or the season approaches.
  18. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:22 PM) Garcia & Berry will be better than what we will have on our bench How many wins do you see the Sox having, as of today? Berry has a career minor league OPS of .687. He literally has no power. He's essentially a worse version of Juan Pierre. Garcia is at .708 with a K/BB of 5.7. He doesn't walk and he strikes out a lot. He may be young, but he has not proven to be a good player. I don't think either are that good, though Berry si more useful than Garcia. I've said before I think they are anywhere between 83-85 wins. I think they'll end up in 2nd place, but I could see them in 1st with a bit of luck or as far down as 4th with a lot of bad luck. The Indians added some talent but they're still pretty bad, the Twins still have no pitching, and the Royals are still generally unproven with less depth in the minors. The Tigers are the only team I see as clearly superior and I see a lot that can go wrong with them too.
  19. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:15 PM) No, but their stronger bench will help them win the division. That's what matters. Their bench is f***ing garbage. See the aforementioned post
  20. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:11 PM) I'd rather have Flowers on the bench over whoever our backup C is. Compare our bench to what the Tigers have Brayan Pena - .583 OPS '12 OPS Ramon Santiago - .555 OPS Danny Worth - .586 OPS Quintin Berry - .684 OPS Brennan Boesch - .659 OPS Avisail Garcia - .692 OPS Andy Dirks - .857 OPS 1 out of 7 ain't bad
  21. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 03:07 PM) I could see AJ having a decent season. With Flowers & Dunn in the lineup, both could've over 200K's And they could comebine for 70 homers and an .850 OPS too
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 02:57 PM) We should trade for JIMI HENDRIX with AVRIL LAVIGNE and NICKELBACK and LINKIN PARK. And we should have spent TUPAC in free agency
  23. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 02:56 PM) We got weaken at C, 3B and our bench. While other teams in our divison added key pieces to their team Besides Dunn we have no left handed power Overall, they may get weaker at catcher, but Flowers is far superior defensively and has quite a bit of talent offensively. We'll give that one though. With regard to 3B, you are looking at 1.2 WAR from Kevin Youkilis, -0.2 WAR from Orlando Hudson, -0.7 WAR from Brent Morel. If, as you state, the White Sox got weaker at 3B, then you are assuming that Keppinger is a no-win player. I'm just going to say now that I'm quite sure you'll be wrong on that. I also think the bench and the depth of the bench has strengthened. I don't understand that argument. Could they be worse? Sure. Will they be 13 wins worse? I would bet that they won't be.
  24. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) Clearly, the sum of the move from AJ to Flowers + the move from Morel/Hudson/Youkilis to Keppinger = negative 13 wins, if we're lucky. Nobody will improve, everyone had career years last year. God, Hahn is the worst. Why did he do this to us!? /green If only I could be as optimistic as you. I don't see this team winning more than 42 games
  25. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 02:15 PM) As of today, this team will be lucky to win 72 games As of today, this team will be lucky to win 100 games See? Works both ways
