QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) News flash: Hallmark stock rises 17% due to projected sales increase for imaginary girlfriends. Signs 3 year marketing deal with Mante Te'o. No more jokes. They really aren't funny. -
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) What defensive coordinators are out there for the Bears to hire? Dave Wannstedt? He was great in Buffalo last year, he only had an historically bad defense.

Thank you. A critic who finally stepped up and put themself out there. I think there are some problems with it - primarily the Olt deal (I think the value is fine, I just don't think Texas would have accepted it, preferring to deal Olt as part of a package for a great player) as well as playing Beckham at SS - he has good range at 2B which generally translates to OK range at SS. But I do thank you for sticking your neck out there. It's not empty criticisms of a front office doing nothing with no other viable suggested solution.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 10:44 AM) It makes perfect sense. He is familiar with Kiffin just like he was close with Lovie. He probably doesn't know Trestman, and would be a lame duck with one year left on his deal. He can go work with someone he knows and if a DC opens up next year, like if Lovie gets a HC job, maybe he jumps at it or he stays with someone he's comfortable with. Considering Kiffin's age, maybe he takes his job in a year or 2. He's not working his way up the ranks. Never going to get another HC job either. As great and diplomatic as he was, it's hard to come back from 0-16.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) Best case for T'eo is that he runs a good 40 and comes off somewhat normal in the interviews with NFL teams. If a team thinks he can play at the NFL level, they will not give two s***s about his fake girlfriend. So long as it's not a distraction in the locker room. -

ESPN sits for 10 days on an article like that because they want to get all facts checked before they air it, and then they'd want to air it in an OTL type of setting. They'd only have one person doing that, and they need sit down, televised interviews from each party involved. They need to wait to hear back from people, set appointments, get flights scheduled, etc. Deadspin just calls or emails people. There is far less to do with a written news piece than there is a televised news piece. EDIT: At the very least, they want to get facts checked first. That can take some time. -

Imagine your 10th closest friend. Now imagine them - for a split second - getting cancer. Would you visit them in the hospital? Thinking of that group - the group just outside of my main group, no matter which group of friends it is - yes, I'd visit them in a heartbeat, and I'd even drive a great distance to do so. Can you imagine NOT doing that for a girlfriend? -

The best care scenario for Teo is that he's gay. Otherwise he's looked at as a complete moron or as a manipulative psycho with no conscience, both of which destroy his personality and character. Atleast with being gay there is a struggle emotionally and mentally to coming out, especially given the circumstance he was in. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 09:30 AM) He's playing on the offensive end like an all-star. He's even playing defense. Really he's been huge this year. that's what she said

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 09:05 AM) If I were Manti Te'os agent, I would try and get him a deal with Skype. "I am Manti Te'o. You should use Skype. I wish I did." The end. Except that he did use Skype with his parents. I know you're joking, but still...if you have a Skype account set up, why would you not add your online girlfriend? -

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) if anyone thinks Republicans care more about getting people out of poverty than Dems you are awfully mistaken. I would say they care the same. They differ in methodology. -
QUOTE (bhawk99 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 07:44 AM) Maybe some of us "whiny" fans simply realize that the already loaded Tigers became even tougher to beat during this off season and the Sox didn't. Do you really feel that adding Keppinger and losing AJ made us a better club? We will still support our team but in the back of our minds we know that making the playoffs with this current lineup even as a wildcard is a longshot. Then I ask for the fortieth time, what would you have done differently? Who would you have added? I feel that Hahn has played it close to the vest with regard to expenditures so they can make a move come midseason to improve the club if necessary while they can also sell pieces off if they don't. The Sox can't spend money frivolously right now like Mike Illitch can (because he doesn't give a f***). Personally, I feel like next year's club could be as good if not better, but I so happen to be a believer in Tyler Flowers while you obviously do not.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 04:54 PM) I agree wholeheartedly with you that the burden lies with the team to attract fans. If the Sox don't spend money the burden still lies with them to get fans in the park. And that is why they still spend $100 million, even if they only get 85 wins and a 2nd place finish out of it - history has proven that a great sell-off and a lack of spending by the team in turn leads to a huge decrease in attendance.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 04:12 PM) Why don't you "vote with your feet" and move to one of those glorious, poverty-free, self-sufficient conservative-run states? Also plenty of people question poverty, the efficacy of existing programs and the possible need for new or different ones all the time. What a lot of people don't do is say "welp, we tried! oh well, let's cut taxes and give up." You mean like North Dakota? The Native American population is stricken with poverty - mostly due to no incentive to work due to government subsidies to the Native American people - but non-Native American poverty rate is incredibly good, taxes are low, cost of living is low, and unemployement is also extremely low. -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 04:43 PM) Careful, the media and many of your fellow Sox fans would label you a whiner for a comment like that. Stop it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) Broussard was on ESPN while I was at the Gym, said that Rose is still working on cutting, said the AS break is his guess still, added that he's also heard Rose has added 10 lbs of muscle that he hopes will help him take the pounding of the NBA better and that he spent a ton of time working on his jump shot since that was sort of all he could do basketball wise. You were able to listen to all of that without losing massive amounts of blood through your ears?

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 12:01 PM) I don't buy that(though i didnt read the article), why would he sign with the Raiders when Trestman was the OC if he didn't like the guy....Rice also had a 1800 yards and 15 touchdowns in that offense. As others have said there's no reason not to like Alshon Jeffery, he'll be working out and learning from Marshall in the offseason so I only expect him to get better and be an awesome #2.....Also Bennett ranked highly on PFF as a slot receiver. If they can all stay healthy thats the last thing I'm worried about. Fantastic hire.....Early bold prediction....Matt Forte will be an MVP candidate NEXT YEAR.(if he stays healthy) There's no homer quite like you. Problem, of course, is that, regardless of his talent level, Forte's never been able to punch the ball into the endzone, and if you are to even be a candidate for MVP as a running back, you need to score touchdowns

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 11:51 AM) That's one answer. Well it's a ridiculous question to ask. The burden for getting fans to the park is on the team, and the best way to do that is is to put a winning product out there. The Sox faded down the stretch last year, but they put together a pretty damn good team. All we can hope is that the fans respect that and show up, even without a sexy move. I was reading a Baseball Prospectus book from before the 2006 season started, and they detailed the biggest growths in attendance from one year to the next. In 2000, the Sox had the 3rd biggest up to that point - a 31% increase - that did not involve moving into a new stadium (the Tigers had an increase of like 104% when they moved into Comerica, which is absurd to think about). If they could have maintained that, it likely would have continued to increase, but it did not, so it fell off. (BTW, that 2000 team drew about 20K fewer fans than the 2012 team with far cheaper ticket prices and a team that won 10 more games. Both finished 9th in attendance) However, the idea of a full-on rebuild doesn't work either, as proven by the 1997 and 1998 season - attendance went from 1.86 million down to 1.37 million, and then they lost another 40K fans in 1999. That 97 to 98 drop indicates a 26.8% decrease in attendance. The Sox couldn't afford to lose a quarter of their fans right now. So, yes, bottom line, if the fans don't show up, the Sox won't spend money.
