QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 04:41 PM) I bet he is. AJ 1 Mauer 0 I doubt he cares anymore

I thought the Sox sold low on Swisher and that he was unlucky in his one year in Chicago, but I honestly never had any real problem getting rid of him. He did have more of a track record than Quentin does. What I've been trying to suggest is what was said above...that Quentin's value is far greater to the White Sox than anybody else. The Sox will view him as a guy who can hit 35 homers and put up a .900 OPS while playing adequate defense, while other teams will view him as an injury risk who is inconsistent and plays terrible defense. They're the same player, just different scenarios and differing opinions on the value of said player. I don't think the Sox are going to be able to find a better investment on the open market for $5 million, so they may as well stick with him one more year. If he doesn't do much this year, he will be let go because paying a guy $7 million to hit .240 and 25 home runs who does not play very good defense just is not smart.

Who are the top 5 in QB rating in the NFL right now (without looking)? Hint: RYAN FITZPATRICK IS #2

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) I know he's entitled to it, but I couldn't accept it from the Giants if I was him. Maybe accept it and then put it up for auction with the money going to charity. or the money going to a quad-kegger! amirite?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 10:01 AM) I don't think the disparity in pitching is large enough for the Giants to win this. The Rangers have a potent offense, the Giants have Buster Posey. The Giants also had the second best UZR in the Majors, with the Rangers about 40 points below them. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 10:44 AM) They are a good team as evidenced by their October success, but *I* personally don't care at all about them. Cliff Lee can't wait to get the hell out of there for NY and I've heard more stories about the glory of Hamilton than the glory of Christ. I'm done with caring about how amazing it is that he stopped shooting heroin so he could resume being a pro ballplayer. That bit was tired about 3 HR's into his AB in last years (I think) HR Derby. I think a lot of people got tired about the recovered heroin addict stuff. It doesn't change the fact that he put up a .359/.411/.633/1.044 line this year while playing good defense in CF. Josh Hamilton is good.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) There might not be anything worse than having puking kids, while puking in between cleaning up the kids puke. Let's just say this weekend was a wasted weekend. I believe I understand the reasoning behind the puking.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 07:21 AM) Adam Dunn was .223/.337/.466/.803 with 91 strikeouts in 238 AB the second half of the season. Yet, if he signed for 3 years and $40 million some would consider the problems, and considering they were ranked in the top half of almost every offensive category in the AL last year solved. That's an .803 OPS over half of a season, and an .803 OPS is still way above average, and that was considered him "struggling". Quentin's .728 was his entire season outside of the 3 weeks prior to the All-Star Break. I don't understand why you are incessant about there being little difference between Quentin and Dunn when you can quite clearly see that there is a huge difference. Dunn has a mediocre season by his standards, Quentin has his second best season, Dunn's is still superior, and you try and suggest they are equal; Quentin puts up a .728 OPS outside of a 3 week period where he put up a 1.500+ OPS (which, at the end of the day, still equates an .821 OPS or whatever over the course of the full season), and Dunn puts up an .803 OPS in the second half, which is still pretty damn good especially considering that is far worse than expected out of him, and you are trying to suggest that they are on equal footing. The White Sox biggest problem last year was their lack of a powerful left handed bat. LHB put up a .272/.326/.368/.694 line against right handed pitching this year, and no matter how you slice and dice that, it's awful, and bringing in a powerful left handed bat would be good. Thome would have made a hell of a lot of sense for this club, considering he was cheap and left handed, but no matter what, the Sox need to bring in a left handed bat, and surprise surprise, Dunn is left handed, provides a sweet stroke, and gets on base quite a bit...so yes, he does solve a lot of the White Sox offensive problems. That doesn't mean that anybody here is advocating giving him $40 million. I don't understand why you've been on this Quentin/Dunn thing recently. Dunn is a superior player to Quentin, and I don't think that's really too hard to see. Because of his low contact rate, Dunn's production can fluctuate, but he still walks and hits a ton otherwise. Quentin can explode, and has in the past, but anybody counting on that next season or any time in the future is really holding on to a prayer, because he's looked like the Carlos of old for that 3 week period before the break, and hasn't otherwise.

I remember really wanting to finish off the sweep, not because I wanted it sooner, but because the Astros had Clemens, Pettitte, and Oswalt going in the next 3 games, and considering what the Red Sox had done the year before, I was a bit scared. Looking back on it now, I'm not sure the Sox really had anything to worry about, because they likely would have ended it in game 5 anyways because the Sox have historically hit Clemens pretty well (and that year was no different), Clemens was hurt anyways, and the odds of the Sox not winning one of those next 3 was pretty minimal to begin with the way Contreras, Buehrle and whichever of Garland and Garcia would have gone in game 7 (really probably could have gone to either of them). But yeah, I still pop in the World Series DVDs from time to time and just smile. That was a joyride.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 08:22 PM) http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/...for-series.html He's back. I'm kind of confused with what they mean here though "Guillen also will serve as an in-game analyst for the first five innings for Fox Deportes before returning to the Fox Sports pregame set, where he will join Joe Buck and Tim McCarver as an analyst for late-inning strategy." How will he joining Buck and McCarver if they're in the booth and not the pregame set? And Rangers in 5. Probably as a sideline analyst of sorts

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 04:55 PM) Who would ever predict that Uribe would win 2 games for Frisco with his bat? I'm pulling for the underdog Giants in the WS...GO GIANTS!!! uhh, I'm not sure either of these teams is an underdog

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 04:44 PM) CQ was Soriano-like in that he was able to somewhat mask a below average offensive season with a ridiculous 2-week hot stretch. From June 22 through July 11 (16 games): .367/.492/1.082/1.573. 11 HRs, 24 RBIs. Now I know you can take away a lot of players' peak hot streaks and their numbers don't look as impressive. But this is pretty damn extreme in this case. Outside of those 2 weeks CQ was straight poopie. .228/.322/.406/.728 outside of those two weeks

QUOTE (beck72 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) I agree. Quentin would be a good option for teams who can't afford Werth, Crawford or Dunn. Q is one of the few guys who could be a middle order of the bat, at a reasonable price for the next two years. And I strongly doubt that you'll get anything of significant value for Quentin in a trade. As someone mentioned above, Quentin is more valuable to the White Sox than he is anyone else. He's pretty comparable to Ryan Ludwick (except that I believe Ludwick is a great defender and a bit older). Are you going to give up anything truly worthwhile to obtain Ryan Ludwick?

All Lee Evans does is catch touchdowns.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) THis year, Quentin will still likely earn his money even if he's just at DH. Next year...we need a step up. He needs to show that he can be a middle of the order bat, because he really doesn't do anything else. He needs to be moved from the outfield too, but we'll see if the Sox actually follow through on that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:55 PM) Hence why I feel like I haven't seen Lincecum step it up against top competition yet this year. 7 IP 4 H 2 ER (3 R) 1 BB 7 K in his last start against Philly...it's not his fault that Aubrey Huff can't field. 7 IP 6 H 3 ER 3 BB 8 K in his first start against Philly Maybe he didn't step up and completely shut them down, but those are still pretty damn good starts against a pretty damn good offense.

That's the Buffalo Bills I've grown to love.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:53 PM) And with his 2nd-year arb raise, he'll be paid slightly more than one win costs on the market. Whether or not the Sox should keep him is another debate, but as I've said before, you cannot count on any surplus value from him I think you have to atleast offer arbitration to Quentin unless they believe he can be non-tendered and resigned to a cheaper deal, similar to what the A's did with Cust. $5 million for a potential 3-4 WAR player is pretty damn good value. If he does the same thing again next year, you cut the string and let him go for good.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:41 PM) The Reds' offense is a little bet better than the Giants' too, but we saw a legendary performance against Cinci. Yeah, but that wasn't by Lincecum.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:03 PM) I'm not sure that Lincecum is exciting me right now. He didnt' get lit up by the Phillies, but we didn't see the sort of 14 strikeout, legendary stuff performance against the Phils that we saw against the Braves. To be fair, the Phillies offense is a little better than the Braves too.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:07 PM) Last year, he'd have been worth about 1 WAR at DH. He'd have been an upgrade for the Sox at DH...but that's because we made a ridiculous decision on DH. Let me put one other thing into the discussion....this is Carlos's first arbitration year. His salary is going to go from the minimum to about $5 million. That's less of a bargain this year. If he put up another .800-ish OPS next year from the DH spot, he'd be looking at another boost, maybe to the $10 million range. And frankly, I'd consider him a non-tender candidate at that point. Quentin is probably viewed as an $8-10 mill player on the market, and he'll get probably $3-4 mill next year, $5-6 the following year, and $6-8 in the final year. I imagine $5 mill is within the realm of possibility, but to receive a full 100% increase in salary from his first arbitration year to his second...he better have cured cancer while hitting 50 homers too.
-
Everyone does realize that Sizemore has like 30 homer potential, plays CF, and steals bases, even if he is oft-injured, right? And Quentin has like 40 homer potential, plays a terrible RF, and doesn't do much else, and he too is oft-injured, right? The Indians would laugh at the thought of Sizemore for Quentin.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 22, 2010 -> 02:30 PM) Imo, there is no clear cut rule with respect to a friend's ex. Things vary depending upon how tight you are with the bud, how long you've known the girl, how much time has passed since their break-up, and whether you're a lead guitarist for a major English rock band. Thankfully I am, so there's never any hard feelings. In my fraternity, if there was ever a guy who wanted to go after an ex, all you have to do is talk to him and ask if it's cool. Usually they were, but there were a couple different times that the guy just said "No, I really don't want you to." And, out of respect, those guys stopped pursuing them.

Because Rowand had a terrible year and Andres Torres is good.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 23, 2010 -> 10:43 PM) Congrats to the Giants. They've got three of the absolute worst contacts in baseball. But when you get Uribe, Torres, Huff, Burrell, Lopez, for what, 7 million combined? In other words they were pretty damn lucky. Oh yeah, they can pitch too. Who is the 3rd? Zito and Rowand are givens, but I really can't think of another contract that can be considered among the worst in the game.
